Today, I tried to find the materials necessary to complete my project. I'm having a problem finding the copper for making the evaporator with. (I tried checking at Home Depot and I couldn't find copper plates or copper blocks.)

Metal supply shop, online metals, or the like.

You could PM me with the amount you need.

Detroit, could you mill a base to have rings that copper caps would fit into?

Huh? You mean differently from this?

Most definetly, the second one is nice looking, but pretty useless to say it bluntly.
If you reverse it and have the smallest cap at the lowest point its a bit better, and then you could also take a pipe thread and increase the surface area at all. But your not getting any benefit out of such base. Simple a flat 2" square 1/4" thick with rings for the caps, and holes in the base for surface area would be enough.

The purpose of such a base is simply to hold the caps and make brazing easier.

Ah, well the benefit is manufacturing time. 2nd design takes about 1/3 the machine time as the first. About the performance? no test results on either yet.

It sounds like I could make what you're talking about, just reversed steps from what I've already done, eh? Smallest cap the closest to the base, largest cap the furthest away. Largest cap will have BOTH a thicker base for conduction in the Z direction, and be further away radially. Smallest cap will have the shortest distance to the processor...but such a small cap has not much surface area, and not much conduction cross section. Seems like ballpark the same amount of tradeoffs with either config, so it's not worth it for me to argue which *might* be better, testing is the way to go.

Could you give me a PM with the price of one of those bases with matching caps? (You also may want to consider less caps in teh overall design. Also a ledge actually around the final cap would be great for placing an o-ring for mounts)

Sorry Star882, a bit of a thread hijack happened. You might also just post how much copper you need, and let anybody PM you. Also try these guys
http://www.industrialmetalsales.com/
they are in a Detroit suburb, but all of their business is internet and phone orders. They are cheaper than Metal Supermarkets, they would probably have to order copper for you, as they don't stock copper, but their prices have often been the lowest I could find in small quantities.

I've seen good deals on bulk copper on eBay before. Copper bars, rods, etc. Might try looking there.

Or local metal suppliers. Tend to be much cheaper than Online metal stores... especially with shipping.
