sorry guys...didn't see your replies earlier and bought the Thermaltake 700W toughpower PSU:

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/product/Power/ToughPower/W0105/+105_image/01enlargeview.jpg

lots of great reviews, 700W, quad rails, modular, good brand, and looks pretty solid........all for $150 shipped from newegg

is this a bad choice?

Maybe not bad but certainly not the best choice for the money

You don't need near that much power. Go and look at the XS psu deal of the month. That'll be a better choice.

lets not forget the ripple comparison. ;)

Ripple at 500w load

The PSU I suggested

Ripple at 525w

Yep, hence I just love your reviews JonnyGuru when you put such graphs up :D
Makes it just SOO much easier to look at rail ripple and figure out which ones would probably give a better overclock. :D

ok im not exactly sure, why does the ripple effect anything? Does it sometimes give not enough/too much voltage to a certain part creating instablility or possible premature failure of a processer?

Is that people can say these days, OCZ!! sorry i'm just sick of hearing of OCZ in every single psu thread. I mean they're good psu's no doubt but people make it out as if they're the best thing since the automobile.

If ripple exceeds ATX allowances it could kill your components over time.

700w is way over the top for your rig, but don't go thinking you've bought a bad psu.

That Mushkin is a horrible PSU. Read the review at jonnyguru.com.

I would have gone with the TT as well. Gotta love Modular PSUs:).

The TT 700W you bought is a very good choise ssabripo, I have the 750W and I am very pleased about it. I was also looking for a GOOD psu and I saw that the best was the Corsair HX620 (unfortunately I couldn't find it) and one of the best was the TT. The OCZ has MAJOR ripple issues, I wonder why the people here keep recommending it.

Because it has virtually no difference in ripple but is a bit cheaper

That is a good unit, but maybe overkill for your setup. I'd pick the benign Etasis built Silverstone Zeus ST46ZF as the horse for the course. :)

thanks man...:toast:

I have the OCZ 420W powerstream from 3 years ago...it did well, but it is running a little hot right now, and with the X1900XT, and another IDE HD, I just wanted to be on the safe side. A good 550W would have done fine, but for $20 more I just splurged with something modular and with enough power for my next rig (hopefully) :p:

it powered his puny rig :p

Anyway I'd say go with what Super-Nade said. The ST56ZF is a great psu that is just as good as the 600W OCZ for around the same price and is a single rail =)

Super Nade

I'd also pick the Aerocool Zero dBA from the OP's list. The ST56ZF is a better unit than these newer FSP's or OCZ. I would also consider Sparkle, who, although absorbed by FSP make units a notch above the current FSP's :)

so I dont get it....is there any technical proof that the 700W TT toughpower is not on par with the OCZ or the ST56ZF?

maybe I missed something

No. I got word from a TT Tech that all of the "Toughpowers" are essentially the same platform. That's a good thing. :D

meaning what? surely the 700 has to have bigger caps, rails, etc than, say a 550W version...right?

OMG! Of course there would have to be components of different size and value, but the Toughpower units are all the same CWT platform instead of the mix match of Sirtech and HEC used in the past.

My point is just that people give Thermaltake a hard time for the crap they've put out in the past. People "accept" the 750W because there's plenty of good reviews, but are still skeptical of the 650, 700W, etc. when the fact of the matter is they have the same CWT platform but with lower total output capability.
