my southbridge is bare (abit NF7-S 1.2 i really dont want to use epoxy, either. is there a good way to mounty a heatsink on it without epoxy? im gonna need a heatsink on there for the ocing i plan on doing.

there is a few ways to mount it, Therma pad (probably worse way), AS3 or your choice of paste in center, and a SMALL amount of Superglue in corner/s, AS Ceramique High density....
for the OCin your doing would just a fan mounted above it do?

A sure fire way to solve this problem:
Use some Artic Silver epoxy mix and dilute it with some ASIII. A 1:1 ratio works great. If you ever need to remove the heatsink, it just pops right off. You can scratch the residue on the chip off with your finger nail easily. Works every time:)

I agree, I do the same all the time. I learned the hard way after killing a board or two trying to get stuff back off that had been stuck on with AS3 epoxy. This makes it alot easier, and I bet it has better thermal properties too.

i did a ver similer thing with my rev1.2
i put as3 all over the sb exept the 4 corners where i put as3 epoxy.
those 4 little dabs shouldnt be to hard to get loose if ever needed.
diluting i think ill try next time if you guys think its easier to remove than how i did it.
reason i say is my rev2 is a bare SB and it gets hot enough to burn my fingers if left on more than 10 seconds.

heatsink would be better option but when a mate asked me to, what i did was to drill four holes (each 80mm apart) and cut out a circle, put a grill on and stuck a fan on :D ok, so technically its a case mod and to make him happy i used a coloured fan but it lowered the temps significantly because it was b,lowing near processor as well, thin it was nearly 10*C drop
as3 and epoxy with heatsink would be best bet though

i use a drop of superglue in each corner and some thermal compound in the middle..
gave me another 5 Mhz in dual channek

maybe im missing something.. but my SB doesnt seem to get warm at all. i guess it only gets hot at really high fsb...

it gave you 5 MHz more after cooling your southbridge?
i have to try that..

Maybe is other way to mound a heatsink on Southbridge. Got any holes or smthg? EPoX 8RDA+ got holes. I don't know ABIT NF7S PCB.

yeap!.. just a tiny passively cooled POS chipset heatsink from my dead BX board..
Doesnt hurt to try anyway

no holes for south bridge on nf7-s. i think i'm gonna buy some arctic silver epoxy mix and mix in the 1:1 ratio with some as3. what size hsf can that mix hold? or will it only hold a chipset fan

No mixing :) Epoxy with paste !
Just buy some silver epoxy, and this will be good. :D

The problem with epoxy is that it is difficult to remove if you need to RMA the board. The original poster does not want to use epoxy because of this.
Diluting the epoxy mix with a silver based thermal paste works great. It not only eliminates the difficulty of removing epoxy'd heatsinks, it improves the thermal conductivity. Been doin it this way for years:)

Please help me to make sure I understand.
Are you recommending that I mix the thermal epoxy in the normal way, and then add to the mix AS3? Or are you suggesting I substitute AS3 for the part 2 of the epoxy mix?
TIA

Yep, that is exactly what he is recommending. It will make it considerably easier to remove if mounted wrong or returning the board. However, I have no idea how big of a heatsink this kind of mix will hold. I don't think it would be strong enough to hold a large heatsink though.

seem people do hsf's the size of the stock celeron and p3 cooelrs, theyre of average size, seen bigger done though

im just gonna use my stock nb hsf from the nf7-s and mod it to fit the sb i think. the cord needs to be extended tho, so i'll have to splice it
