View Full Version : PCMark04 fix for Conroe: post if interested
A program i`ve asked to be written appears to have solved to about 90% the problem. Multi-thread test 3 suffers, but apart from that...works perfectly. I`m not allowed to distribute the software, but if you want it to be available, please post and say so
Kenny
This software cannot be seen as cheating. It affects core affinity- for multi-thread test 3 the CPU acts as a single-core. Thats not an unfair advantage...if anything its a disadvantage...but I get my score.
Release of the software is at the discretion of the person who coded it.
EDIT: Feb 2008. Have attached the software.72580
Software coded by Ed Wilk. Would be good manners to credit him in all PCM04 scores using this software. Im optional. I just had the idea

It would be great to get this. We've been discussing at hwbot about removing the bm, but there should be no problem if this 'fix' comes available.

Thanks for showing interest, but still poor that only 8 guys posted here.
Ed Wilk coded it, if ya feel like thanking him in ORB results...up to yourselves
Kenny
Couldn't get it to work and get a score. How should we play with that tool ?
Multithreaded test 3 HAS to run as a single core to work.
I set:
CPU 0+1 (1 minute)
CPU 0 (1 minute)
CPU 0+1
I start the bench 15 seconds after the first CPU 0+1 instruction starts. Make sure its set to run on PCM04 in the box at the top ;)
Thanks for the fix. :toast:
Works for me  :

Looks like Grammar Test is still erroring.

Will this work fo any dual core, currently I'm still playing with opty's and have been unable to run pcmark 04
the software will work with any dual-core, yes. It *should* solve any dual-core issues with PCM04, but i`ve only tried it on a C2D
mtzki

The grammar test doesn't seem to pass with C2D even with a single core with high enough speed.
Hi! If you`re trying the affinity software at a high clockspeed, you might need to change the start point of the bench. Try 17 or 18 seconds after the first CPU 0+1 execution :)
If you`ve set affinity in task manager to completely single-core for the bench and it errors out again, I cant think of a solution, sorry :(
mtzki

Yah, won't pass with a single core as i said. But the tweak is good up to 3.7GHz or sth.

I'm pretty sure I get how it's done, but with the cpu @ 4.5 Ghz it just will not work, grammartest (test 3 part 2) fails anyway.

Did a lot of testing/trying with one of my X2 3800+ rigs.
No way that the program did set affinity as it is supposed to do.
Added start-times for affinity set for PCMark04 (ready for bench) as described (3 "entries" in left pane).
Started bench.
No update in history (right) pane.. and AMD Powermonitor cleraly showed that no "switch" to single core occured at scheduled time.
DOuble-checked with setting affinity manually with Task Manager, which made test pass (low score of course) with AMD Powermonitir showing that only one core was used.
Either I have misunderstood the way the program should work/be used.. or there is a bug.
Sorry to bring this old thread back, but I don't know how to do this:
I set:
CPU 0+1 (1 minute)
CPU 0 (1 minute)
CPU 0+1
I have send few personal messages, but nobody answer :(
So, can someone explain this. I have downloaded "Get n Set Affinity", but there is no way to adjust affinity start time.
"set affinity by time" Is this same program or some other?

PM`d ;)
WTF no PM man we want to know as well :)
heh heh sorry Dinos
ok...some guys get this working fine, some dont.
I know now that Ed put an updated version of the software on his FTP. I was thinking that it was a bad version coz of the problems iv been asked to help with, but if ferds has just downloaded it and tried...obviously not.
There are windows services that need to be kept enabled for it to work...i`ll dig out my notes and edit this post with it.
I`ll be honest..I dont know why some ppl cant get this to work. Windows updates? SP2? a different windows build if those exist...I really dont know, i`m sorry if some ppl are disappointed or ****** at me coz I cant offer the magical solution but I just had the idea and learned to use the resulting software like everyone else.

I could get it work, but only if I locked PCmark04 to a single core, and everything else to the other core.

You can try the following:
Hiding all processes ( @ set affinity utility ) except PCMark04.exe
Open up PC Mark04 and position the PC Mark04 main window on the right side ( lets say :P ) of your desktop.
Position the get&set affinity utility on the left side of your desktop ( so you can see it & use it while PC Mark04 is running ).
Set affinity to both cores and press Set ( or apply, don't remember the application button names :P ).
Then click again on PCMark04.exe & tick the Core 0 radio button ( but don't press set affinity ).
Press the Run/Benchmark button of PC Mark04.
During the second PCMark04 test get ready to press the Set button @ get&set affinity utility instantly when PCMark04 is deinitializing the 2nd test.
Let the 3rd test finish, then when PCMark04 is deinitializing the test, quickly click on PCMark04.exe @ get&set utility.
Let the test run, and when PCMark04 is deinitializing the test click on the Core 0+1 radio button @ get&set utility.
When the next test is deinitializing click the Set affinity button @ get&Set affinity utility.
Will it work ?
Depends on your timing.
Try it 3-5 times, you'll make it :)

Thanks to Ed Wilk for the code and a thanks to Kenny for the thread.
I would say just download the "set affinity by time" run it set the number2 =
(0+1) for 1 minute then set the 0 cpu for the next minute then set it back to (0+1) 1 minute after that when the first one you set Kicks in give it 16 seconds then start the test. If at the end of the test you get now score you are either oc'd to far or you vid card is! My vid card was clocked to high on the gpu the first time I ran it. I backed it down a bit and got a score.
Remember open PCMark04 first. So the program will see it.
Then set your affinity by time next like this. Here is a pic of what it all should look like
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v253/WeldZilla/likethis.jpg
You will notice in the pic that the Affinity program is set to start at 6:05
So at 6:05:16 hit "Run PCMARK"
Now sometimes when it is done with the web page rendering section of the test you will get a crash post. Just ignore it and let the tests finish and if you are not too far OC'd you should get a score.
Like this....

Does that work? From past experiences, if I click on another window when PCM is running, it`ll abort the bench at the end of whatever test its on?

how about the link to your results benchzone. I can't find you at or near the top of the orb. You will find my results on the first page. From my experince clicking anything will cause the bench to lose focus, and it will fail.
So bring it with the pics and the link to your score. I know the way I did it works and I posted my results to prove it.

Anyone know how to get this to work with Q6600 Kentsfield quad core cpus ?
Think you`ll have to ask the original coder to do another version :)
Are any of the tests in PCM04 gonna be able to use it? From memory they only seem to have 2 threads max?

i think it's encoder related. i already installed media player 10.
does the windows media encoder 9 included in windows media player installer?
or i have to get wmv encoder separately?
tnx in advance
The encoder comes seperately

Sorry to bring this old thread back, but I don't know how to do this:

CPU 0 (1 minute)
CPU 0+1
I have send few personal messages, but nobody answer :(
So, can someone explain this. I have downloaded "Get n Set Affinity", but there is no way to adjust affinity start time.
"set affinity by time" Is this same program or some other?
Open PCMark 04.
Open Set Affinity By Time.
Select PCMark 04 in the drop down menu (upper left corner)
Look at the running clock and decide what time you want to start PCMark 04, set the "Selected Time" clock to that time.
Select *CPU 2* (0+1) and hit "Add"
Select *CPU 0* and add 1 minute to the "Selected Time", hit "Add".
Select *CPU 2* again and add another minute to the "Selected Time", hit "Add".
The idea is to set it up like 5 min. before you want to start PCMark 04
When the "running clock" hits the time you want to start, wait about 15-17 seconds and start PCMark 04.
Just discovered this and it works great for me!!! Thanks K404!!!

Nah, 04 is very strange
It runs at lower frequency just fine but if I up it too much then it doesn't run and fail grammar test. For example, I benched conroe @ 4.5Ghz, it passed any bench - pcmark05, all 3dmarks, SP32M but fails pcmark04. 4.2 failed too, max I could get is ~4Ghz and the score was terrible in comparison to my 6300@3.8Ghz
