Has anyone figured out what the max temp is and which program to use to monitor the temp? My old c2d computer runs at 47c with coretemp on cpu fan on auto speed and about 53c load and like 60c load on hot days.

Speedfan shows 32c non-load and 43c load.

The reason i'm asking is because i just sold my computer and the buyer wanted to know if it was safe to put the fan on auto.

use TAT or coretemp to report the most accurate temp.

Apples and oranges. Most modern cpus have on-die thermal diodes like the one that C2D mobos read but only C2D has Digital Thermal Sensors (DTS) that CoreTemp and iTAT read.

IMHO, the thermal diode temp should be <60C max and the DTS temps should be <70C max for reliable long term operation. According to Intel's thermal design guidelines, the DTS control the fan speeds and fans are permitted to run at reduced speed until the DTS temp reaches 66C, at which point the fans run at 100%. The max Tcase is 60C which corresponds to the thermal diode reading. Lower temps are always better but thermal throttling doesn't even engage until 85C (DTS) so 70C isn't really all that bad.
