i got my E6600 to 3.0GHz on stock V. i have zalman cnps9500 and have used AS5. my idle CPU temp is 37 in IDU and 39/35 in TAT. when i test in TAT it shows 64/59, IDU shows 61. are those safe temps for 24/7?

What week is your CPU? I have the zalman aswell...could it be the Zalman that causes the problem? Loads of people with E6600 zalman combo have the heat issues.

i doubt it's zalman issue, as the same cooler kept my P43.0e at 3.6GHz and raised Vcore 1.4V under 54C...
i don't know what week is my CPU as i forgot to look before i placed the HS. is there a way to find that out without removing it?
i think it's board issue as i find it impossible for the cpu to drop or gain 14C in a second!

If you got a retail CPU, you can check on the box... on FPO/Batch # it will say L6XXxxx... the XX is the week number.
I also have a Zalman on my Week 27 6600. I'm running at 3.4, and my temps are 50C idle and 60-62 load using Asus Probe, Core Temp, and TAT. Seems high to me. I have reseated it once, and I am thinking about doing it again, but I think theres another issue here. The base of the Zalman does get slightly warm, but the heat pipes and fins are all room temp even under load.
@ Ibinco, what are your temps?

I had to replace my Zalman since my E6600 @ 3.5ghz was 55-60 Idle and up to 80c under load.
I installed a thermalright ultra 120 and now it idles @ 45-50c and up to 70c under load!
