This is a Abit NF7S 2.0 wich i bought 1 day ago. Look at the northbrige :D If you look very close and from different angels on the monitor you will see that the thermal paste wich i rubbed of left a very interesting marking- yes, its our little copper plate hidden under a naoughty heat stopping plastic :D
Currently (without ANY mod, not even changing the stock heat paste or adding a heatsing for the southbrige) the mobo runs @ 236mhz fsb w/o any problems...
It would be very interesting to see what would happen if we would lap the chipset *a little* :D
oh yeah! nice find, sand paper time...:D
by the way, Welcome to the Xtreme :D

It's the rev2.0 board, with the new stepping of the nforce2. You can see because there is not the copper heatspreader on top (like a gf chip) but it's all plastic like you can see in the pic

Yeah :D Been doing a lot of reading around here just not a lot of posting. New setup is coming and hopefully I will be able to contribute to these wonderful boards :toast:
well, your more than welcome, ull love these boards, i stumbled across them accidently and havent regretted it since :D

Holy crap, he's right! I had to re-read it several times, then look at the picture over and over again. But I can see it now. There's a subtle ring in the NB right where the copper plate was on the old steppings.
Plastic = teh ev1l :upset:
OK, so i'm all for lapping the NB (and SB), but how does one go about doing that? Its not like there's a lotta space to work with. Maybe a tiny-azz hand mirror or something. Will need a compressor around to make sure there's no shavings left on the mobo too. Its that or wash it... *shudders* I'm not that brave/crazy.

My rev2.0 is also red, 237fsb no mods
Berkut what is your VIO voltage? Ive been reading that high VIO = High FSB in CPU-Z under memory it says your VIO, I bet you get 3.4+ Vio!

There's enough room for lapping but you'll have to do small movement and that will take time, i don't think that you should moisten the sand paper either. As for washing the mob, that's not a really good idea. Just clean the mobo while your lapping

3.3V... :D
When ill finish the evaporators case + isolation + mounting system (3 in 1 :D) ill finnaly mound my phase change chiller on this naughty little 1700+ thoroughbred puppy :D
it worked @ 2.66ghz 1.85V water cooled (1C water) but the KR7A R'ds psu buzzed @ that speed... hope the nf7s has a stronger psu...
hope the o/c will improve: -40C vs 1C :D:D:D:D
too bad i dont have a server to upload the unit's pic's
u can upload pics here when u post

Give me a week or two to kill my new NF7-S v2 and I'll see what happens when lapping the nb, I bet I can get it down to the metal.

Actually you might be able to lap it with a small angle vibrating sander. If you think about it, you're just looking to get through the plastic, so until you do you're just sanding on plastic. Just a thought for ya:cool:

if you do this, take some pictures.

The question is though, if it would really help the overclock that much. In my NF experiance so far, you can usually get the northbridge high enough. It seems that the A1 NB's are no sweat to get high enough with a Vdd mod and better cooling. The problem lies mostly in the board PCB. your 3rd mem slot will start to hold you back before the NB is at its limit. You can increase Vdd and Vddr all you like, you always reach a point that it just blue screens no matter what you do, while the same memory can run much higher in mem slot 1
its luck of the draw with boards.... I would take a good board with average northbridge any day over an average one with a good NB...

what grits are u using to sand? i was going to use 500-->1000-->2000

For those with a desire to lap the NB, there is a guide at motherboardfaqs.
http://www.motherboardfaqs.com/Combined/abitnblapping.htm
Haven't tried it myself, so can't comment on whether it's the best way or not, but will at least give you an idea if you haven't done it before.

Thats a little different than this subject... over there the copper plate is already on the "top", you only have to lap it, over here its hidden beneath that darn plastic....

If I were you I'd grind it off with some 300 grit first, take the bulk of the plastic off, then go to 600, 1000, and 1500 once you get to the general depth you want.

Actually ill start of by finishing my phase change mounting and put a 120W peltier to see if theres any difference when lowering the temps (any REAL difference)...
