I have two conroe rigs one on air and one on phase. I want to swap the chips on the mobos to try some different benchmarks. Will leaving the dialectic grease on the old mobo cause temp spikes if it is used with air cooling?

There is no heat generated on the back of the CPU, so the answer would be no.

uhmmm not at the "back" per say... but small amount of the heat dissipates through back, etc. Enough to change much for air cooling? Not really. Maybe tops 1-2c. There was some experiment done with back of motherboard cooling right for CPU... they gained about 3c with powerful fan... and stupid looks... :)

Sounds good so I should have any problems putting a chip into a mobo with some dialectic grease still on the pins and then running a stock air cooler with it for a few days at stock settings. Thanks guys I appreciate the fast response.
