View Full Version : Which good PSU over 600w does NOT have dual (triple, quad) 12v rail?

Basically I don't like this trend with all these multiple 12v rails. I don't plan to use any wicked videocards, i would probably even use some old PCI 4mb card, which is enough to display desktop :D I just want to make sure that my processor gets enough power. So I would want some PSU that is over 600w and has single 12v rail. But whenever I look at popular PSUs they have those dual rails... Like this OCZ GameXStream 700-Watt has 2 rails 18 amp each. Why not single 35 amp rail??? Well I understand that it's easier to build 2 weak ones instead of one good one...

There are several Zippy/Emacs units over 600W with a single 12v, and a couple PC P&C Silencers. The GXS is a quad 12v unit, btw.

I believe it's also more complicated to build seperate rail units however they did it to comply with intel's policy.

Just an add in here if you aren't even going to use a graphics card a 400W power supply would be fine. Well unless your running Dual Processors.... I mean a Pentium 965 I believe would draw around 170W on load or around there I think. It's all been going down from there. But if you really want a 600W+ go for it.

Well...over 600w is kind of tricky to find single rail PSUs. As far as I know, these are your best choices:

550W Enermax EG651P-VE FM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103437) (36A on the 12V)
610W PC Power & Cooling S61EPS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817703005) (49A on the 12V)
700W Zippy PSL-6701P-SATA (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103714) (45A on the 12V)

Out of those, I'd say the PC P&C is your best bet. 49 mother:banana::banana::banana::banana:ing amps! And only $170...very nice PSU.

Thanks guys, I looked up Zippys and PC P&C they're awesome! Not the mainstream stuff for kids... :D

This (http://www.zippy.com/P_product_detail.asp?lv_rfnbr=2&pp_rfnbr=1340&pcp_rfnbr=20&pp_name=Gaming%A1EPSL-6850P(G1)&pcp_name=gaming%20power&pcpw_rfnbr=6&pp_code=Gaming%A1EPSL-6850P(G1)) zippy 850W is the very best there is with 60A@12V,
then you have this (http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/viewproduct.php?show=S75EPS) PCP&C Silencer 750V with 60@12V.

just out of curiosity, why do you want a single 12v rail PSU?

Then you will not run into load balancing problems between your 12V rails'. So for example, both my graphics cards are connected to a single rail, but that rail is only able to supply me with 18A and those cards need 20A together, then you will run into trouble. This, however, is a very poor example as this won't easily occur in real life, but there are other examples, like jackies' in this case, where it might be beneficial. He only needs 1 rail for the cpu and nothing else (almost then) and if he isn't loading the other 12V rails' that he has spare on the PSU then the PSU might not get up to its minimum load and will shut down.

Not if power estimates for the G80 / R600 are correct... 250w = ~21amps @ 12v

That could give you a decent reason to buy a PSU with a huge single 12V rail.

The new mushkin PSU has 2 rails with 22A each, thats more than enought....

And the 4 rails of some PSU (like OCZ GameXStream) are not independent, they are four, but they combine the power of the other 3 rails to the first rail if necessary.

Where have you read that, cuz I didn't know. The only PSU of which I know that does this is the one from Mushkin, I bet that there are more but I'm quite sure that the GameXstream doesn't do this.

edit: I'm also one of thoes people that hates multiple 12v rails, no matter how reputable the PSU, etc. - I'm just not happy with multiple 12v rails after owning a PC P&C 510ASL, along with a few dual rail supplies - the 510's massive single rail was what got me hooked, and now I'm extremely happy with my Zippy PSL-6701P 700w w/ a 45a 12v rail (with full PFC & 1% line regulation :))

Does anyone know a store in Europe that sells Zippy/Emacs PSUs? I have contacted Zippy serveral times for this but I never got any answers. Thanks in advance.
