View Full Version : Is My HDD Dying?

Today I turned on my rig and when it gets to the blue XP welcome screen there's just an hourglass; About a second later the system reboots. I know it's not an unstable component because it does it whether I'm running stock or OC'd. Temps are normal and it doesn't crash in bios or running memtest, only when loading windows. I was just gaming on my rig last night, but this seems to come out of the clear blue. I've had the harddrive for 3-4 years (every time I built a new system I kept the same hdd).

I tried booting in safe-mode and the same thing happens. I've also tried to isolate the problem by booting with only the bare essential parts and removing other parts. I really think it's the harddrive, but it's really strange that I've never had a problem out of it, then all of a sudden this happens.

Is there a way I can get my important info off the drive before it dies?

I have the drive installed as a slave in another rig and I can get data off, but when I try to go into "my documents and settings" folder, I get the error "access denied" because my profile was password protected. Is there a way I can get around it or enter my password to get into my old profile and get the data?

The hdd died, but I've got a new hdd on the way:
Seagate 160GB SATA2 7200rpm 8mb buffer
:woot:

One question though:
Will I have to create two separate partitions since windows can only see 120GB per drive?

Windows can see more than 120GB per drive. I have a 184GB partition right now. Before service pack 1 - maybe 2, I forget which service pack it was - it was limited but not anymore.
