I've got a doozie of a problem...

I have a DVD writer attached to an IDE to SATA converter. It works just fine in Windows 2003 Server. It also works in Windows XP safe mode. It does NOT work in Windows XP normal mode. The drive is recognized but will not spin. Something is loading in normal mode that is not loading in safe mode and it is preventing my DVD drive from working. The problem, I realize, is that it could be DAMNED NEAR ANYTHING.

Is there a way I can check what's loading in Safe Mode vs. what's loading in Normal?

I have a DS3 btw.

It's a pain to do, but you could always disable unnecessary services one by one and see if any of them change whether your CD drive works. At the same time, you can also end processes one by one until it works. Since it works in Server 2003 and XP safe mode, those are probably your best choices unless someone here specifically knows what the problem is.

Maybe when in safe mode remove the drive from hardware manager so that when winxp normal start it will try to detect it again
