its not recommended, for one if your using Windows XP your gonna have to reactivate it and for two, windows tends to freak out. I tried recently and windows wouldn't boot.

if you un-install all drivers, including chipset, etc, it can work. However, the performance will be a bit weird, if it does boot, as the HAL will be set for your other CPU.

Of course, there's always doing a repair install after getting it all together. This will allow you to save all your programs, etc. Once again, tho, un-install all drivers first.

I just did it without any problems. Just make sure you uninstall all the Nvidia drivers. best bet is to take ALL Nvidia software off your pc first, re-boot, let windows install the basic Microsoft drivers (if present, skip if they're not there) then change chip/mobo and install the new drivers first thing. You will have to re-activate windows/office.

Uninstall the nvidia drivers from the control panel and uninstall the IDE drivers in the device manager.

If you do this the pc will boot. But like the posts above, you will suffer from performance losses...

I uninstalled/reinstalled 3 different motherboards 2 different CPUs on 2 different operating systems recently (2600+ on A7N8X-E, E6400 on 775Dual-VSTA and DS3) and it worked in all cases just fine.

...except for the fact that I can't get my DVD drive to work with an IDE to SATA converter...

Yeah I been using my hdd for long time with several different systems. Most of the time windows was able to recognise the new hardware... But I would reinstall it just to have a fresh install :D

You can always delete the ENUM key and it rebuilds its driver database from scratch. This avoids any nasty reregistering and starts you clean on drivers. I've been doing it for years (google ENUM key trick for how-to) and never corrupted an OS yet. Hope they put it in Vista...

:D Two ways to go:

1) Reformate

2) Don't reformate and split Your rig in two halfs with an axe later.....

my vote always goes for a repair install, after completely uninstalling previous drivers. I hate losing stuff.
