They wont be getting my money anytime soon for that rediculous system hog. If I need everything to be rendered 3D, I'll just pick up gentoo and compiz for free.

I think alot of people are going to buy the upgrade versions till prices come down on the full versions and im sure oem prices are somewhat cheaper.

But at retail prices, i wont be purchasing vista.

Yea Vista=resource hogger foreals..

I could barely take it for about a week before deleting it. I think i'll wait until a better transition of more drivers support and lower price. There is no need to rush; XP is fine right now.

Vista RC1 (Release Candidate 1) is now available. Anyone tried it?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/

From what I gather there, it doesn't look to me like everything is rendered in 3D like a lot of people say.

Yeagh - the lack of driver support for the beta has me concerned.
Sure, it's still beta - but the dirvers i've seem from nVidia and Creative leave me feeling a little gunshy.

In fact, I may have sent back a video card through RMA without the need for it. It was showing A LOT of artifacts in games - ON VISTA. When I got the replacement, same thing. (un)/(re)install drivers and still get them. Go back to XP, clean as can be. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Creative hasn't really wow'ed me with their support either. A driver release from July that drops dead this October.

But, I chose this form of punishment as my hobby, so i'll keep banging my head on the wall until my skull splits open. or they hand me a pillow. which ever happens first.

I never tried the Vista beta's. I wonder if you can turn off the AERO 3D to boost up the performances in games? Or would that cancel some important services?

thats cheap, uk price is about the same, they just change the $ for £ :slapass:

also, if you pay for 1-2-4 gigs of ram, why dont you want it to be used?
i wish vista would use all of the ram that the system has, would be much faster.

AFAIK you can turn off the 3d interface. I'm 99% sure...just haven't actually seen it first hand.

yes you can do just like XP and run the windows classic theme.
clears up some ram but i wouldnt necessarily say it speeds things up unless you already running a crappy system.

400 bucks... pfpfpf... id rather spend another 400 on a 360

Resorce hog, not the best support, I really don't see a reason to switch. I was running RC1 for about a month. It was pretty, but that is about where it ends. I was running the 32-bit version, I heard the 64-bit version is a nightmare. I am passing RC2, probably passing on Vista as long as possiable. Yeah I know DX10, games of the futher, blah, unless there is better support 1 of drivers and 2 of current software, I'll pass. I am back to XP Pro x64 and I missed it. I know x64 has given me its share of problems, but compaired to Vista, HA! I don't need a $400 OS that uses almost 500mb ideling, looks really pretty, but dosn't do ANYTHING I want without moaning, beeping, endless permission popups, and generally a whole lot of bit**ing. I heard that XP's offical support will end in 2008 (November) (http://www.itnews.com.au/newsstory.aspx?CIaNID=21761) so who knows. Maybe it is just me, but after some REAL WORLD testing, I am unimpressed, and the $400 price tag dosn't help to soften the blow either. Again maybe just me but I smell another ME, lol.

^ you're not alone..i hated it too. BUT it's still in the early stage and it's suppose to get better. I just dont see what's the big rush is until we see more mature drivers and better support. The eye candy is nice and stuff but for now Windowsblind can mimic Vista themes just as good and without the resource hog.

Well, I've started hating it when I got the Beta 2 version but after a little while towards RC2, I have to say that I'm liking it....not good for gaming but still good for the office applications ;)

fgs, can you people at least give valid proof to why its a "resource hog"? I have been using Vista RC2 as my main OS now since Sunday and I have had no problems with it, in fact it is a lot faster than XP is at doing everything. Everything is a lot faster and smoother as well as everything working as if its a release. I would go so far as to say that I prefer this build of Vista to any previous Windows OS prior to it... including Window 2003 Server :O

By design it 'hogs' more resources...that's how it is faster, it has very aggressive caching algorithms. HOWEVER, should a program say "I need more RAM", Vista does allot the RAM it needs, taking from its own cache. Also, should you pull some RAM out of the system, it 'hogs' less. IMO, 'hogs' is really 'utilizes'.

I've been using Vista for a bit now, and it's undoubtedly faster than XP and 2k3Server at everything except where undeveloped drivers effect it. Example: PCMark05 is definitely faster, SPI is arguably faster, icon caching and activating is insanely faster, etc.

So far the only reason I could see myself upgrading to Vista is if Dx10 versions of games start appearing and either show significant performance gains or feature advantages.

it's not even the DX10 which is really appealing in Vista, altogether you can instantly see that it is a much better OS than XP. Everything is available to you when you want it, I for one will be purchasing the upgrade version as soon as it shows up on UK (e)stores :)

The price is really the killing point for me. I could use some of the features (4gb of ram recognition would be nice), but if XP works ok, why bother. That amount of money buys any of a number of nice hardware upgrades if someone is just itching to spend the money.

The pricing is simply insane. I need the business grade networking for remote to work, and I like the media stuff for home. The "ultimate" is just the name for the biggest sucking sound from the checkbook. Wrong!

Not leaping till they want to give it away for a bit less than a car payment.
