I'm currently dorming at University of hartford and I need a spot for my tower. Current it is on my desk, but I would like to move it off of the desk. I don't want it directly on the floor because of dust (would that be a problem in reality?) so I was thinking of placing something under it to give it an extra foor or so from the floor, and give me some room if I used the top of the tower as desk room. I don't have anything to really put under it (I don't want to use shoe boxes or anything that could collaspe) so I was thinking of using my subwoofer, which is against my insticts because of a) the vibrations and b) the magnetism. I can take pictures of the area if anyone wishes to see it. Any help or input would be great

just put it on the floor and get some dust filters if you're really worried. dont use the subwoofer!

A sub will not corrupt your HDD's.

But I would not sit it on top b/c of possible vibrations.

Just set it on the floor, or on a board if carpet. Get wire mesh dust filters and clean them out with water when needed.

My HTPC is sitting on top of my 10" surround sound sub and has for over a year now, no problems thus far.

Sit the case on some wood or something about 2in above the floor, should keep the dust from being a major problem .. As other have said .. you can put it near the sub .. just not on it.

That wouldn't fit in my dorm :p

I made some ghetto design for now, constructed of 2 shoe boxes filled with hard materials so they won't crush, it does the job but looks horrible haha, I'll try to get a family member to get some peices of wood up here or something...

I do have filters (case is a P180) so if they would filter the majority of the dust out, I could just end up putting it on my floor

well is it a carpeted floor? if so what carpet? i have 3 dogs so there is hair everyone! my case is on a hardwood floor in my room and my p180 filters do a great job, but some dust still gets thru...

Anecdotal evidence isn't worth much, as in the cases of lifelong smokers who get hit by buses at 98.

A 100MB disk drive has on the order of a billion bits, so it's not as if you're likely to notice right away if one of them — or a few hundred or thousand — have become corrupted.

It isn't a plush or fluffy rug, its a really cheap and hard one haha :p:

I don't notice too much dust or hair anywhere, and yes, as always some dust does get through the filters, but nothing compared to not using filters :p

I really like boosting the computer up 10 inches though, it gives me that extra 8 inches to put my speakers and headphones on
