basically i am considering updating some family members laptops to XP Pro, the instalations seem to be really corrupted and of course they have no idea where they put the bundled software. :slap:

im not sure if i should just do it now, or wait untill Vista is at retail and see if the price drops on the Retail Box XP Professional. what do you think?

actually the way it works in my country, is that, u buy the license of microsoft's latest product "operating system/office/whatever" and this will give u the privallage of using earlier releases of the product.

Like if u need windows 2000, u buy the XP pro as the available right now product from microsoft, the XP pro key will give u acces to the windows 2000 license.

my point:
there won't be any official drop in prices from microsoft, may be from the stores retailers or so, which i really doubt.

Why don't you just buy the OEM version of Windows XP Professional instead of the retail box??? $139.99 at ZZF http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=604631

the OEM version is bound to the motherboard, the license is not transferrable if you decide to upgrade or get a new computer. i know this works ok for the life of a laptop but when its replaced then the OEM software becomes useless for the next machine.

Would changing the motherboard stop you from installing the windows oem again? Or would it stop working altogether?

wel if you have a local university or college. Go visit them and you probably can buy a retail version for $5, thanks to Microsoft's "academic license"

Yes - it wouldn't be valid - except for the old rig.

I've asked around at local universities (we have more then 15) and nobody knows about this - is that available only in US?

Will it be better for me to wait a little bit and get vista instead of x64 XP Pro? I want the 64 bit capability but dont want to spend £90 on the oem version only to have to buy it again when i upgrade my pc, having to spend more when i might as well buy vista when that comes out.

Think i might have to bite the bullet and pay for the retail version of vista when that is out. At least i can remove it and sell it if i don't like it that much. Then again, i could get hold of Vista rc2 and have a try out...

Just chatting away to myself now

i've got an OEM copy i've used on all my setups. you just jhave to call microsoft and tell them that you upgraded and they will give you an activation code.
