i had an old socket 478 motherboard that used hooks to hold on the NB heatsink, never tried replacing it though so i'm not sure how you'd install one

zip-ties might pose an outcome here....

But would they be able to put pressure downwards onto the core?

I have no experience with that, but you will find a lot of pics in this forum where people have tied thier aftermarket NB cooler with zip-ties and for them it worked. Maybe you should try it yourself.
BTW there are even some retail NB coolers where the manufacturer delivers the cooler with zipties that are meant for tieing the cooler to the hooks.

Hmm, I'll see.....I could possibly put a zalman, and use the jing ting for SB, but it's dumb, then I'd still need a fan overtop since it's fanless.
