Possibly, we might see McDonalds in the city.
Dynamic in-game advertising to come to Battlefield 2142
Digital Illusions CE AB (publ) 2006-08-31
Digital Illusions and EA will bring in-game advertising into Digital Illusions’ next PC title Battlefield 2142
EA has signed an agreement with IGA to bring in-game dynamic advertising to selected titles in a move to provide cross platform in-game ad solutions for global advertisers. The initial title to incorporate dynamic advertising will be Battlefield 2142 when it launches in October.
Through the agreement, fans of the franchise will see new, realistic brand presence integrated into contextually relevant game environments. Digital Illusions is entitled to a share of all the revenues generated from the advertising featured in Battlefield 2142.

A clever way of making some cash, while at the same time not really disrupting gameplay.

A clever way of making some cash, while at the same time not really disrupting gameplay.Agreed! This has been done in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory with success. No harm done. If product placement makes games less costly for the gamers, this is a great move.
Product placement is used so much in other media that it has become trivial.

this is also a good sign that pc games are becoming more and more recognized as a healthy market

I'm not sure if the option "love it" is applicable but I can't say I mind too much. It really depends, if i start seeing ads for U2's new cd on a billboard in the year 2142 I might have to start burning down buildings.

I dont mind but I wish this would mean a cheaper game although this would never happen. :(

^^ no but it does have the potential for EA to have more servers for the game. (who am I kidding, its company car money)

I dont mind but I wish this would mean a cheaper game although this would never happen. :(The gaming industry is still a competitive industry. They compete for customers (cheep games favored over expensive - everything else being equal) and advertisers (high exposure favored over less exposure - everything else being equal). I would expect games to become either more complex (advanced graphics, enhanced physics and sophisticated AI/gameplay) or less expensive. Either way gamers win!

meh 99% of the server or more will be paid for by us (ok part will be sponsered but free EA servers r rare).
If this would reduce Bf2142 store price or if EA in return would release free add ons etc yeah.
if EA would use this money to increase the patch or development team for games so the bugs etc would be fixed quicker, or if there would be a bigger revolution in gaming from EA (checked the godfather?) then yeah id say its a good idea.
But somehow i doubt all the above and i guess the cash will be used for company cars or whatever (like Sanborn said).
Bf2142 will make EA lots of cash it wont matter if its a bugfree game or bugheaven these adds will onyl increase their profit and i heavily doubt we will see anything in return.

na, actually their dev team has been working really well with the community on the beta forums. I would link you but you wouldn't be able to read them without a password anyways.
They have been taking criticism and feedback very carefully over there. I had an outstanding defect I submitted about the simulated screen when you were a gunner on a flying APC being washed out...it got fixed in the new version today. So that made me happy atleast.

If it's a city map it would actually be nice to see some ads. Make it feel real. But now if I'm in the middle of a desert and see a KFC sign, there's going to be problems.

It's product placement, not billboard-like traditional adds:Through the agreement, fans of the franchise will see new, realistic brand presence integrated into contextually relevant game environments.

^^ yeah I think DICE knows about the success of the 2-3 urban maps on BF2 and plans on more of those in BF2142. The beta map for 2142 is more wide open, I'm not even sure where they could put an ad if they wanted to.
$5 says BF2142 has Under Armor and tire ads all over it at launch.

Product Placement here we GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why not, in economic terms why not have the 10% of the game already financed by ads, thats the right way let´s see if can handle that in the side of customers charging us less amortization.
But i can tell you surely that will not.
"New, realistic brand presence." What does that even mean in 2142? Are they going to advertise personal hovercraft? Bigfoot Networks' new Cybernetic NIC? Duke Nukem Forever?
Ads in sports games make sense. Ads in 22nd-century wastelands do not. I'm really curious as to how they plan to pull this off.

Ads in games are the future. I don't give a damn about ads, the only thing they do is make the game more realistic. Unless ofcourse if ads are put in the menu's of the game or in loading screens.

Best loading screen imo one of the Need for Speed racing games I think, where you could play PONG!

I don't really mind as long as the game isn't buggy...but someone needs to bring down EA before it becomes a super annoying version of Intel.

yeah but thats a bit of a differnet story since BF2142 has no monthly price. I hate to say it but I honestly saw someone on the beta forums just refer to the game as "Billboard 2142" after playing the update w/ ad-placements (the ads aren't in yet).
I can't post the pic he put up because of the fileplanet NDA or whatever, but it might be scary (its blank billboards on walls and bases like 15 feet apart).

Billboards are bad. Full-blown stores get me giddy. I wanna see burgers and fries flying through the air!
they have ads in NFSMW and i actually enjoy seeing them as it adds a nice touch to the game to make it seem more real
i would completely agree with this especially if it costs less for us

If I shoot down a jet and see a dude crawl out dressed up like ronald mc donald Then I will boycott ebay. Or of course if a wounded soldier graps by ankle while on foot and says some thing like "head on, apply directly to the forehead, head on, apply directly to the forehead, head on, apply directly to the forehead":nono:

I believe it's either by IGA (http://www.igaworldwide.com/) or Massive Incorporated (http://www.massiveincorporated.com/) (which does a better job to be honest with you) not sure which as sources point to both. However, do you realize that your dynamic ad experience will include not only rotated pics but rotations of vids with sound? If you don't believe my play planetside.

Who cares, open up your hosts file and edit it to block the advertising companies. Or easier, open up PeerGuardian and let it block it for you.
