I want to learn more advanced stuff about painting metal, so it looks really nice and glossy. This is of course for a computer case.
So let me see if I can get the basics straight first.
1. Prime a clean metal surface with something like this:

Note: What if the case is already painted in a powdercoat? Can that just be painted over, or will the new paint be more resistant to scratches and damage, and/or last longer if the powdercoat is removed first, then primed? Will it stick correctly to a powder coat? (I don’t want to do a rush job, I’d rather do a quality job with this.)
2. Spray paint it with several layers with something like….? I need a recommendation.
3. Sand it smooth with high grit sandpaper, I’m guessing 1000 or 2000?
4. Use something like this to polish out the scratches, to a glossy shine:

Is all of this right? Also, I don't know anything about the different automotive paints available, whats good or not. Can you guys suggest soms stuff? What’s a good looking glossy spray paint that’s decently durable against scratches or better? I don’t have a paint sprayer, I’ll have to use spray cans.
Edit:
I just wanted to say that I'm not totally inexperienced so it wont be like talking to a total newbie or anything. I restored the frame of a small tractor last year by sanding all the rust from the frame, primed it and repainted it with pretty good results. I also repaired a very nasty, large scrape across the door of my truck (about 1x3'), with excellent results. It actually looked new when I finished... which didn't go with the rest of my truck. :P Im also an art major with some painting experience, and a nack for the arts. Sooo... lets get started. :D Teach me!
