What are the chances of screwing up your new PC from static discharge? I've upgraded my computer a lot in the past (actually I've opened it, sat on a carpet before, taken out ram, put in new ram, video cards, sound cards, etc) and I realized I've never taken any precuations against static discharge. I live in New Jersey and the humidity pretty much never drops below 50% in the summer-time, so mabye static doesn't build up a lot on me, could that be one reason why?

I'll definently take precautions this time, since it's building a PC from scratch, but I'd just like to know.

By the way I'm asking because I can feel static when I put my fingers really close to the inside of my case :\ How do I get rid of this? Are there any really easy methods to ground something, like the removable part of my case where I can feel slight static on the lower corner?

Scroll around this area, there's already a thread on the subject.

Basic rule: touch the chassis or unimportant piece of components (ie. the metal slats on PCI cards) before touching the PCB's. As long as you're at the same electric potential as your components, there is 0 chance of static discharge (to them... you could still get a shock from a doorknob or something though).
