Hi! I've got Intel Pentium IV 2.0GHz (not overclocked) and Epox 4BEAV. I'm going to buy a new Conroe PC in about 1-2 months and... unfortunately sth bad started happening to my old proc. I need this computer alive until I get my new one.
My computer keep restarting/turning off sometimes with a random bios alarm sound (long beep or changing high-low signals). Running Prime95 and MBM I found out that the problem is probably with the processor. Computer restarted after working for a few minutes in stress. It was restarted at 46C proc. temp (I don't think if it's temperature problem).
So... I have not-fully working processor. Now... what can I do? Is it possible to repair it somehow, to do sth to make it working better etc... I don't want to buy a new proc before I buy my new whole computer...
Thank you for help and any advice!
Greetings,
Theriel

Try lowering the clock speed some? Other than that, I doubt there's much you can do :(.
P.S. It took me until the end of the post to figure out what "sth" meant. :).

I had an Abit board that would give me a sort of siren "high-low" sound as well when the warning temperature set in the BIOS was exceeded by the CPU or system diode. You might want to check the BIOS to see if it has such and option, and raise the temp limit or just disable it if it does. If it really is the CPU you could probably pick up a really cheap, used Socket 478 Celeron. (one with 128K L2 cache, 400FSB)

I lowered the clock to 1.80GHz... 6 minutes in Prime, ~46C and crash (not restart, just freeze)... Any other idea? Please? Maybe it will help you - to start the computer after such crash I need to wait some time (random) or move randomly my case (make some vibrations)... Maybe if I keep shaking the case all the time, everything will start working normally ? :D.
To Pongi -> I checked it. It's set to 65C or something like that. The sound is sometimes high-low very fast, sometimes slow high-low, sometimes just one signal... I suppose that these are 3 out of 4 possible sounds by my bios ;-].
P.S.Sorry for that unclearance with "sth" (=something)
Greetings and thx for response,

imo, there's a higher chance that the problems lie with the mobo than the cpu. Try a diff. mobo and also check the Epox esp. for bad caps etc...

Take a can of compressed "Air", open the case and blow that dirty thing out. It is caked with dirt and dust and gunk. Clean house, man. :D

Case is opened _and_ clean almost all the time. As far as MB is concerned - I haven't got any spare MB and no friend to lend me :-(. It is quite possible that this device is making the problem, though I have no idea how to check it. Looking at the mobo I think that capacitors are OK...
P.S.This Proc/Mobo couldn't wait this 1 month... graaah.
