I have a question for nn :)
You know you can set priority of processes in taskmanager from low to realtime.
These values can be expressed as decimal code, where low being 4 and realtime being 24, and all others inbetween that. However it is possible to set priority through dos from 0 upto 31. This is a fairly ineffecient way of doing it, in other words, not nice when you're overclocking to the max
Is it possible maybe to make a small program or modify the taskmanager to be able to set priority anything from 0 to 31? I'd like to see the effect of setting some (os)processes to very low and the benchmark program to 31 for example.
Repoman
08-28-2006, 09:29 AM
I don't think it would help at all. Even setting spi, etc to realtime doesn't change or can even increase the time, I remember some tests on it a while back. Just leave everything on normal for best results, windows does a pretty decent job managing that stuff

Today it is too late but tomorrow I will run some SP and 3d to compare :)
Well, I installed it after formatting a partition...
p5w screen pops up, then:
windows cannot boot because the missing file is either missing or corrupted:
<windows root>\system\hal.dll
or
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
eh i dont remember which one, but i'm sure you know which folder it is.
well actually, when i check my computer, it shows that my drive hasn't been formatted at all!
im gonna format w/partitionmagic now then re-install and see wtfhappened!!!

well im running off my primary disk with an XP install now. I plan to put XSOS, a new XP install and Linux install on the new-unformated 320 gig disk. What your saying is I can make a 2 gig partition for XSOS and then install programs to a sepearte partition?

I would just make a new program files folder on the X-drive. You can also just remove the 3dmark folder on the X-drive and install the program in the location you've just removed, the files should be the same, but now the registry values of 3dmark are included in the registry of both OS'.
Do I make any sense at all? :D

Well I just installed XS OS on a 2 gig partition and it seems to be going fine. I tried running programs from my other drive (my original XP install) and they ran. Does this mean I could just install stuff 1 time and then run it from a common Partition?

Provided the OS or App knows where to look for all the dependencies, like .dlls
mursaat
09-03-2006, 04:16 PM
You can use the same folder to install in both OSes.
I usually create a partition in a 2nd HDD, that I always assign D:\Programs
I install everything there, apart from Office, Antivirus, Nero. So if you want to install 3dmark for each os, use that folder for both.
But that's a reorganization when fully formating, if you already have a Xp and XS OS, you can use X:\Program Files\3dmark for both, and everything will go fine.
And usually, programs that don't copy dlls to c:\windows\system32 like BSPlayer, ATI Tray Tools, ATITool, FlashFXP, Firefox, Winrar, Rivatuner, etc can be used without install, only making a shortcut. If they have to write anything on the registry they will "on demand" :)
For further OS Installing and tweaking you can always read my guide at DFI-Street (hope hot-linking other friendly forums is not forbidden):

what size hard drive or partition would you recommend for this?
For just the operating system and page file, that is.
I too install all programs (though, including office) to a different hard drive than the OS is on.
I extremely recently lost my installation of XP (long story) and the CD (which I would use to repair the installation) has a long crack through it (also, long story). This would be great to hold me off until I get my new system (with which I will get a new copy of xp as well anyway). So yes, I legally own a copy of XP.

Your Overclock isn't completely stable probably and that is what is Causing the BSODtrust me when i say my overclock is stable. It was a X6800 not the E6600 that was in my computer don't know what i was thinking. I can get 4GHZ orthos stable.
Here is the problem step by step.
1. Boot and installed at stock cpu speed restarted computer.
2. Installed Chipset drivers and restarted computer.
3. Installed network drivers and restarted computer.
4. Went to Bios and added my RAID storage set and when booting windows BSOD'd again.
5. Unpluged storage raid and restarted and still BSOD
So it seems that adding raid after install is a bad thing as it currupts the boot.ini

I'm just dropping by to say thanks, the work you guys have put in would've had to been immense. Once again thanks a lot, this is my new os.
I installed this OS, but I couldn't get to internet. I enable online mode from system tools. I have a 3wire router(not so hot), and when I put in the SBC cd which configures my router with my service provider, it's says I need a 128bit encryption thingy. I try to install it, reboot, yet I keep getting this message, which is hindering me from establishing an internet connection. I'm clueless as what to do...
My guess is you need SSL you can get a windows installer here

I'll try the SSL app, and see what happens. It would be nice to be able to connect to internet through this, but I don't mind so much, as I want to install this instead of my OEM version of XP, and dual boot between this and Vista, and my soon to be Suse/Mandriva/Ubuntu installs (Just wanna play around)

Sounds great, I'll throw it on a partition at the same time I do my next Linux install. Can anyone recommend a good partition manager, though? Partition Magic has gone south since Symantec bought out PQuest.
For people looking to de-bloat XP, I'd recommend following this handy XS guide (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=117488). I ran XPY and XP-AntiSpy, along with XP-Lite, and I'd swear I was running Windows 2000 again.
Great page design at nustep, by the way. With Flash animations and CSS being all the rage, it's nice to see something minimalist and functional.

I have a question, I'm sure it's been asked.
Can this OS be used for 24/7 use? I really only get on aim, firefox, CS, and a few other games, not much else besides benching.

I had a question about image file support. I noticed in XSOS v2 that microsoft paint only supported a certain type of file format. Will this be the case on version 3? Or are we counting on it being a little more diverse in those features?
Microsoft Office... What are the odds of that working?

Paint in Win2k is limited to those few file formats, so I guess it should be fine with XSOS 3. IF its not, you can still install paint.net.

actually yes you can, but you need to install a firewall/anti-virus/anti-spyware and maintain drivers like any other OS. However it doesn't support SLi/Crossfire and a handful of poorly made programs do no install. And I would advise you install gaim/trillion instead of AIM

gdogg man oh man it is good to hear from you. Its like dear old friends meeting again. But yeah 2.02 is a little different. 2.0 I couldnt get it to install. How is microwinx going?
Hey I just redid my puter but nothing dramatic, a different case and a bigger HD. But most of it is the same inside.
How much smaller did you get it?
Have you talked to clint? He is somewhere on here from time to time. With an OS size matters a little (smaller is better) but a more efecient OS. Less comitt. Remember when I didnt know what that ment and you and clint held my hand and fed me info on an OS. So it is good to have good friends and even better to catch up with old friends.
We go back a long time. Hey can you pop in at Bold Fortune forum he needs some cheering up. Let me know how its going with the windows 2000 mods (the best OS ever) well this is my opinion, all it needs is a little sprucing up to modernize it and some good shrinking.
My offer is still good about coming to kentucky if you want to.
Good to hear from you my friend.

Yah, I tried to get this to install on a usb key, wasn't easy, needed to find some missing files, still didn't work out, think i'll have to do it on my own to get a small 2k on a usb key.
or has anyone made a method of getting this on a usb key?

XSOS is still under development. V3 is under closed development but you can help out V4 development by going over and helping out GNU. It isn't going to be under the name XSOS because GNU is attempting to make it their personal project and I have no problem with that.

yes my friend it is for people like me that have not money to give M$ and still be able to use our systems. But what made the idea was crunching. That is NN's main reason in making these OS's
didn't know that the main reason was crunching, maybe i haven't bee watching XSOS far back enough :)

I think there was liek 3 versions, one based off of XP for benching/OCing/WCG
1 based off of W2K3
someone PM NN, its his baby.
littleowl
06-12-2007, 12:01 PM
he wanted to make an os that was none bloated and would let the software we want to run, run faster and better without all the crap running like M$ gives us.
The reason for the making it for crunching is because every thing running in the background kills our crunch time. slows us down. we want 100% cpu cycles on our crunching and with M$ we don't get that because every so often it has to check the other stuff that is running.
If I am wrong with what I am saying NN please correct me!
