View Full Version : How I managed to get DFI 975XG to post out of 816 bios every time

Hi,

Well many people have been trying out this pre-release bios without success. The best advice is still to wait for DFI to revise the Beta and wait for it's proper release.

But some of us are too unstable to be reasonable and wait...

Going by the advice that Kunaak gave in the DFI 975 thread by Coolaler on how to set up the board, I found that some things needed to be tweaked on my system to get 816 to work out of bios every time.

DISCLAIMER: Remember there is no warranty on your board if you use the 816 bios, if you don't want to take the risk - DON'T. This is xtremesystems remember, some of us end up killing a lot of hardware through experimentation, though the only board death I have heard of was with 814. If you can't afford to experiment then leave the board alone and wait for DFI's new bios!

I have 2 bios chips, one is flased with 0731 and the other has 816. That's why I took the risk of sussing out 816 so I could get it to work. It's very handy to have the extra backup chip on hand should things go pear shaped (good to have a bios removal tool too).

First thing after flashing to 816, is to reboot a hit del to enter bios,

1) First Enable/diable all the hardware peripheral settings that you normally use (CPU features, onboard hardware etc).

2) Get to genie bios and enter dram timing. In here you will find a whole host of new settings, enter your known ram speeds and remember to set 400mhz for the divider if you are going for over 350 fsb (safe entry level).

I also set Write to Precharge to 12 and Write to Read Command to 10 manually, however I only run at around 380 with 2gig, I'll leave the tweaking of those settings to the masters.

The other very important factor here is to set all the drive strengths manually to 3X, this is very important as the board WILL NOT post out of bios effectivley with your overclock if you don't do this.

Just shoot down the list and set all the drive strengths to 3x manually.

The other ram timing settings can be left on auto unless you know some of them specifically for your board.

3) Now exit dram timings and set oc mode to manual (thanks to Kunaak), and enter your previous know overclock settings manually - fsb, lock pcie to 101 and leave pci locked (it is important to set oc mode to manual as it will shut down the board when you first exit the bios to let the timings you have entered settle). On my board VFSb and Vmch are vmodded so they are always over stock, so I leave VMCH alone at 1.60v (mine is automatically 1.85 due to vmod) you may need to set your in bios, you also need to set your known voltages for vcore and memory.

Contrary to Kunaak I find I can set all voltages at once and the board will post straight out of bios the first time after flashing, hwever this only works if all dram drive strengths are at 3X.

You should now save and exit bios and the motherboard should shut down completley and then re start itself.

That's it, done, this works on my system every time with this bios, and I can now even go back into bios and reboot and also make fsb adjustment if I wish.

Importatntly, 2 gig overclocks don't gain much at all with 816 bios, perhaps 10fsb at best. Kunaak and co, managed to get better results using two 512 sticks.

On a side note there is no trfc setting I can find in bios even with 816, unless it is eluding my limited knowledge. Using memset I can see that the board likes to set trfc at 21, which is quite tight for those wishing to hit over 400fsb.

DON'T ASK FOR 816 BIOS, YOU WON'T GET IT FROM ME, I HAVE WRITTEN MY FINDINGS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY GOT THE BIOS AND HAVE HAD A FEW ISSUES STARTING UP WITH OVERCLOCKS.

I'll try this tomorrow.

I was under the impression that the 975X was the go-to chipset for memory handling (from Intel anyways), why the big issues with 2 gig setups? It sounds like the northbridge can't handle it or something.

Could it be something as simple as it getting too hot due to the stress of addressing the extra memory AND the overclock?

somebody try this! =) and post your results please. mine almost died, and i dont wanna risk my board again.

The issue with this board is not the chipset, but the board itself.

Are you 100% sure of that? People have only been using the 975X with C2D for a short time. Personally 380-395 is fine enough for my needs so I could care less, but it seems that the memory size affecting the overclockability of this system is a slightly ridiculous reason compared to all the other stuff that could affect the overclockability. (Note: I did not say impossible, nor improbable, just ridiculous).

Kunaak tried extensivley to go over 400fsb with 2 gig on this 816 bios, he could not do it. However with 2 X 512 I have seen upto 470. This issue is specific to this board as said earlier. It's more to do with the 1066 strap I think, all the other boards on 975 that can go over 400 with 2 gig 1:1 seem to be forcing the 1333 strap. Unfortunatley this has not been enabled with the 816 bios. We can only hope that Oskar gets the time to implement the 1333 strap with this board.

I can now run 1:1 upto around 370 fsb with 2 gig, @ cas 4. Using Team group 3-3-3-8 667 mhz 2 gig kit.

If the 1333 strap were te be enabled I think this board should at least match the revision 304 Badaxe.

Oh ok, I guess I didn't totally understand the whole strap business. I should probably go read Tony's article.

I can get up to 460 with 2 gigs of Mushkin ram on this board, its once I put in Team Xtreme ram where my OC falls drastically.
this is my second set of this ram, and this board, just does not seem to like that ram...
however, with Mushkins PC8000 I have no problems hitting 400+ with 2 gigs of ram on this board.

give me a minute to reboot, I am running 8 x 400 with the 4:5 divider, testing this ram out for the last 2 days.
+ still downloading XS OS ;)

which muskin ram is that kunaak?

How do you take those screen shots?
My 975x/g with a 6400 and 07-31 bios always runs at 415 and I have had it to 435. If anyone wants to See I will post them.

Hi Kunaak,

What chips do the Mushkin sticks use?

That being said I'm using an E6600, maybe the 9x multiplier is harder to hit as high as 8X.

Yeah even I will like to know is 400FSB is harder to get to with 9X multi ???

Thanks, Raju & Kunaak for helping even before I get the borad :)

I tried last night using Crystalcpuid, locked the multiplier to 8X, even then the fsb wall was the same. Kunaak is right it's to do with ram compatibility.

Nice, is that GMH? Or GKX?

What do you mean?

Can you hit higher FSB at lower DRAM ratio, if so then its board problem still, not ram problem.

I dont know whats in this ram, and I wont be taking them apart to figure it out. all I heard was "micron" when I asked...

anyways, this is my last post from this board for awhile.
time to go back to my DS3 for awhile.

on 4:3 max is 380 fsb, on 1:1 375 fsb and on 4:5 370 fsb.

just means that between ram speed of 928 mhz and 570 differnce in fsb is only 10..

Both of us are hitting a wall with the Team group between 380-400, as for the Mushkin, see Kunaak's post above. It does not mean the ram is poor, or the board for that matter, it just points to a slight incompatibilty after a certain level.

okay a few questions.
what hits performance harder, running 1:1 in single channel mode, or running at less than 1;1 in dual channel and how does this affect and OC for each given scenario?

and how hard would you say it is to get to 350 or 366 FSB rock solid for 24/7 use long term? do-able, not do-able? Don't waste my time? using e6400 and 2GB Patriot LLK(elpida I believe though it OCs well)

has anyone else suceeded in getting this bios to work? i tried all of the above but it didnt work for me.

the ram im using is Micron too. Maybe this board likes Micron? I do believe however that the only reason that a few people have gotten past 400FSB is because they are running the Allendales, not Conroe. The larger cache makes the difference...
