Some is still stuck on my IHS and waterblock...
Ive tried isopropyl alcohol, non-acetone nail polish remover, and Colgate toothpaste on the block.
Ive yet to try acetone or metal polish which is recommended by cool labs to clean the cpu with.
Any thing else that works?

ArctiClean (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835100010)
Cleans everything i've ever bothered using it on... just be careful not to drop it on anything you don't want cleaned! ;)
the stuff smells great too, if you're into citrus. it's just that, highly concentrated citrus cleaner.

paint thinner will work just make sure you use rubbing alcohol later to get the excess oil residue that mineral spirits/paint thinner leaves...:toast:

From a chip, you can easily get it off with the Arctic Cleaner. For any metal surface, I always had to use some kind of metal polish to get it off thoroughly. You can still try to heat it up and take it off with a paper towel, might work also.

does anyone know if "brasso" is a metal polish or if it works?

Brasso polishes and cleans at the same time. You can find it, or something similar, at most hardware stores. Acetone would be my first choice. You can find it at any Home Depot. A small can won't cost that much.

I can't say with 100% certainty that it will work. But acetone is one of the best cleaners I've used. I think Home Depot sells it in the quart size, as well as in a gallon container. The quart container is less than $7 I think. The brand they carry is called Klean-Strip.
I probably live less than 30 minutes from your home.;)

Grass Valley is a nice town. One of my sisters lives in Auburn. I grew up in Silicon Valley, about a mile from Intel's headquarters. But I live and work now in the Sacramento area.

Ok, i went down to Fry's and picked up some Arcticlean... it did crap... it removed a little, but not much.
tomorrow i will try to pick up some brasso or acetone. im thinking the brasso will be better as i dont think acetone can break down metal.

Brasso was hard to find for me. I remember I could find it in grocery stores "back in the day." I was looking for some about 3 months ago and could not find it locally.

Ace Hardware sells Brasso. I remember seeing it when I was looking for something to clean a copper tube. I ended up buying something else that was cheaper.

He should also just look around Home Depot or Lowe's. They usually carry lots of different cleaning liquids.
