Well, since swiftech has failed to provide us with a retention system for AM2, I just had to come up with my own...

How-to:
take the 4 bolts from the STORM 478/775/603/604 bag and 4 of the nylon washers from the same bag (odd shape, fat and then a thin tip)
take 4 more nylon washers from the 603/604 bag.
put all the odd-shaped one on the bolt first, then the normal one.
place STORM over CPU.
place retention frame around STORM.
screw down, being careful to keep the STORM lined up as well as possible.
NOTE: Don't screw in too tight! The retention frame will flex a bit. at that point, screwing it in harder won't do you too much good.

LOL! I hope for you that it will correctly work and that it will stay in place!

reminds me of back when people turned the stock 939 bracket upside down and mounted their whitwater blocks like that - worked like a charm :)

that should work dandy...nice work!

i am using a lightswitch plate to hold down my antarctica block, a quick touch with the dremel and it was ready to go, perfect contact for two months now. i never thought of using the retention bracket, but 4 long screws and it would work too.

LOL !!!!
That's the way to do it :D
Could you test it, so we could see if it really is stable ...
Maybe you could cut some jags to keep it in place more ....

it *feels* stable enough... twisting it does nothing and if i crank the screws down any more the motherboard will smile at me too... I'm just unsure of how the plastic will hold up under the stress for extended periods of time, but we'll see :)

worst case scenario i put AMD's thermal shutdown to the test :D

should hold up just fine...it will likely be firmer than this...

and like i said, its been two months of constant re-applications of the block. i think the retention bracket is a better solution to be honest and will likely go grab some bolts to match up to the stock backing plate to switch out my light switch holddown.

^^ oh is that delrin? I'd imagine alot of flex with that.

that is a cheap plastic $0.98 lightswitch plate with 4 new holes and a slight trim around the opening ;). works perfect with or without IHS and there is very little flex because the antarctica block sticks out underneath it for the most part and sits flush with the backside almost.

if they make them out of delrin then its delrin but i highly doubt it.

nah, i know the style... definitely not delrin ;)
surprisingly good solution though, 3oh6.

HAH! they just don't want to make any updates for the STORM, after all, APOGEE is just as good! *snickers*

Sorry for bringing an old topic back from the dead but I just wanted to tell you guys that Swiftech released Storm AM2 bracket!!! link (http://swiftnets.com/) :woot: :fact:
You won't have to innovate in Storm mounting anymore, enjoy!

Perhaps the reason there's a 4 week ETA on the Storms is because they've been too busy working on these... < /sarcasm >

yeah it is sooo hard to make a hold-down plate for a waterblock! :D
And they didn't even bother to re-design the first plate and only put AM2 holes on it... :slapass:
And I agree, it is ugly. :(
