View Full Version : Noobish Questions about priming a pump

I am a watercooling noob. Please pardon my ignorant questions.
How should I prime a pump? Do I simply hook the inlet to a water source and then suck on the outlet with my mouth?
If I disconnect the pump at some point and then reconnect it, do I have to prime the pump again?
Thank you in advance.

hahaha..sorry somehow I picture you doing that is funny :D
Just do a T-Line before the inlet, pour water in there, tilt it if you have to, and turn on the pump. If you have a reservoir before the pump inlet just pour it in. Are you doing a leak test or something? As long as the pump has water between the inlet and outlet; you dont need to prime it again.

I suck the coolant in to start then connect the lines and add more till it is full.
Just make sure the pumps inside is wet and there is some where for the air to go.

Walter:
What sort of pump are you running? MOST W/C pumps are really specific on not being run dry. The best way to do things is to fill your res/T-line before your pump, and then just turn your pump on for a second, so as to move the water out of that line before it, and keep filling. I know it SOUNDS a wee bit of work, but I assure you it's easier than it sounds.
Once you get to doing things, you'll see what I mean.
Good Luck!

I have an Eheim 1250 pump. The reason I asked is that the installation instruction says "suck" on the outlet to prime, and I am wondering if I should put my mouth there and do exactly that :)

haha - "she's gone from suck to blow...."

I just pour in the t-line until I see the water level above the pump outlet in the tubes (I assume by all fluid dynamics that means it's filled), no need for any of this sucking or blowing o.O

Neat, I will try this approach. This beats sucking by a mile :D
