President Admits Sony Has Yet To Actually Produce PS3

August 22, 2006 9:00 p.m. EST

Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer
Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - With only months until its proposed launch, Sony President and CEO, Kaz Hirai, admits the company has yet to even begin producing its next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

The head of Sony Computer Entertainment America explains, "We haven't started manufacturing yet. Some of our ops guys were actually just in China, and also in Japan just reviewing the lines and everything else. But they are, again, preparing as we speak to get the manufacturing going."

Sony still says it will meet its scheduled November launch of the PS3, despite continuing rumors that the company is terribly behind schedule.

In an interview with GameSpot, Hirai says, "We've not announced and we haven't set really a specific date to say, 'As of this day we're going to start manufacturing.'"

As far as shortages, "Even if you do the simple math you're talking about less than 700,000 units per territory, per major territory, between launch and the end of the year," Hirai said. "So even if there was some fluctuation - you give Japan more, you give the U.S. more, what have you - you're going to end up with some shortages. I think it's going to be very much of a challenge to be able to meet every single unit demand that's out there in the market. That's just a logistical impossibility."

Ouch, its going to be ugly come end of November. Im betting America gets about 500,000 before Jan 1st

Limited supply --> Super expensive bundles and prebuys being negated unless you get a bundle.

Microsoft better bring the knockout blow with a price drop. Or a Gears of War bundle at $399.

I think the next announcement is going to be that Sony will be charging a monthly fee to use the system; credit card only. Then Sony will announce that your credit cards numbers have been stolen. But the identity thieves only bought more Sony stuff. Crazy.

What's worrying me is that I have pre-ordered the battery powered version.

I thought I read somewhere that this was a mis-quote either way I wouldn't expect supply to exceed demand until well into 07.

Haven't they not even shown a working prototype in the case it's supposed to fit in?

How are they going to manufacture something that isn't prototyped...

What worries me is the 5% (maybe its 15%) yields on the Cell processor IBM let out. They are going to hit huge setbacks in manufacturing if that 700,000 estimate wasn't counting that factor.

Haha!! :toast: That really got a laugh out of me.

Sony really overshot with the PS3, or, like already said, IBM really overshot with cell. I wonder whos whos mistake it was, sony's or IBM's. I doubt they will even hit that 2 million mark. I pity the dad who spends 2k on ebay for his sons PS3 on christmas. Even if they hit that 2million mark, at what costs? With yeilds so bad and production so far behind, not to mention they were planning on selling at a loss before these issues came into play. What a nightmare.

Either way, the PS3 on course for a HUGE flop. Sony execs are getting coal for christmas this year.

Haha, or maybe shoveling coal as thier new employment. This is a big foul up, i wouldn't be surprised if a few people got dissmissed.

Not that i would wish that on anyone.

You guys need to remember that PS still has a loyal fan base, if not the oldest and biggest out of the 3 consoles. I am sure that whatever they produce will sell. If their games keep pumping out as they have done in days past they will grow market strength. Remember, it's not the consoles that win sells but the games support of that console. As of late 360 still has a low selection of game titles (after all this time). Some say that they are waiting for PS3. I say for what? PS has the largest cache of gaming developers, period even the dumb titles sell. What is 360 waiting for? 360 was released early to get a head start and now they want to wait? That makes absolutely no sense at all. In order to deliever the death blow you have to be pumping out game titles.

Although it’s been said their will be no price drops for the 360 what difference does it make if they did price drop? There are hardly any decent game titles worthy enough to make the 360 purchase. Once the PS3 starts rolling out game title, after game title, after game title they will saturate the market making the PS3 the obvious choose. As it did in days past with PS1 and PS2 they intend to do again with PS3, pump out a lot of titles and the games will sell the console.

Your eyes are gazed on the PS3 not being release but how bad is it for the 360 that still has no support of decent games to buy with only a few decent titles by the end of year? And as for Wii they will only gain the market share that the 360 should have taken had they more decent games to buy.

Keep your priorities in order and watch the entire market, not just PS3. Because when you do you will ask only 1 question:
Is it better to not have a console or to have one and not have any decent games for it?

The Japanese game company (Nintendo) also said it would aim to ship six million of the new consoles during the first fiscal year of its availability. And thats only in 2006 :)

Again pumping out millions of consoles to the market is not what makes people buy one. It's the games support for that console that interest consumers
No games, no decent games  , no buy your console :D

LOL @ sony
Microsoft dropping the price of their system even $50 would be a huge blow to sony.

Keeping that in mind, if no consoles are available people can't buy them. MS will have way more market share come christmas time, which is when dev's like to release thier games, so the games will come. Also, i don't think people are as loyal as you think.

People are loyal to the PS3 yes, but only the hardcore, and if you are that hardcore you probably alreadyt have a 360 now becuase of your lust for next gen gaming. Now what are they going to do when they cant even buy a PS3 in the first six months without getting raped on price? AND, even when it does come down to MSRP, it will still cost alot more then 360 with fewer game selection. Also, lets not forget the power of Halo. IMO its the only reason there is xbox 360 right now.

My priorities are in order, I am watching the market, and anyone with common sense can see that sony is inflicting themselves HUGE amounts of damage right now.

For a good launch they need availbility NOW and a price drop at christmas. Instead its a paper launch at christmas.

Will the PS3 outsell the 360? Very likely. But at how many millions of dollars lost by sony, and how long will it take? the first year of PS3 is going to be very rough.

No fool will buy a game when they cant get the console. No buy your console, no buy your game.

Also, like i said in my last post, dont forget the power of halo.

So what will we see? Limited supplys of PS3 were likely only the ones that pre-ordered will get one.

WHy is everyone supprised? the exact same thing happened with the Xbox360.
Mostly only the ones that pre-ordered got one. the other people that got one were lucky and paid more then MSRP for it.

And till this day there stil isnt a Xbox360 game that really stands out a game that makes me think oooooooo i need an xbox.

whatever happens I'm going to wait probably a year - year and a half and get the ps3 when they have a price drop and probably move to 65nm production - If the ps3 is as loud as the ps2 then anything to make it quieter would be a blessing.

Plus there won't be a final fantasy or tekken game out for a while, and I still have kingdom hearts and kingdom hearts 2 to get through (and only recently got around to ff9 even though I've had the game for about 5 years).

Theres still a load of great games out on ps1+ps2. You can spend the money you save by waiting on catching up with all the classics you may have missed.

There are WAY more people loyal to nintendo than sony... Look at how many Gameboys, DS, and Gamecubes they are still selling. And then look at how fast they are selling. Wii without a doubt will be a huge player in the console market.

We don't even know the failure rate of those PS3s. Deadline is 3 months away and no units in production...

The only positive thing going for the PS3 is the titles (GT and of course all the japanese RPGs).

I have a feeling the failure rate on the cheap bluray drives (you know they won't spring for expensive components) and on the Cell is going to be REDICULOUS.

Me and several of my friends are going to pre-order/buy 1 each and sell them on Ebay for $2000 and make some bank. I want in on this anal raping action that happened on the 360 launch.

Nintendo prolly has the biggest and especially the oldest loyal fanbase there is in the console market, so I don't know what you are talking about.
