Damn this is getting frustrating.

Am now looking for a DS3, but I only need a *basic-non-gaming-good-2D-video-card*.

As such I had decided on a nVidia 6200TC - 128 or 256 meg

Then I checked the DS3 FAQ here:- http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110460 and then I read this:-
-----------------------------------------------------
[Q] What is the problem with DS3 and nVidia cards?
[A] Some nVidia cards prevent this MB from overclocking at all Ex. Galaxy 7600GS Zalman edition 1.2ns, see the no overclocking at all problem.

[Q] Do I really need a VGA PCI card to overclock?
[A] It depends what is making your system crappy. Sometimes it’s a VGA, sometimes it’s a mem, sometimes these are bios settings. My personal search was: BIOS, VGA, MEM, ordered like that, because changing settings in bios, costs nothing, buying VGA was like 10zl (~3$). Luckily I didn’t have to replace ram.
-----------------------------------------------------

Whats going on ?

=> Would my NVidia 6200TC likely be problematic for O/C ?

or

=> Is my safest / smart bet to just get an ATi PCI-e card like an X300SE [instead of the nVidia ] ?

or

=> Do ATi chipset cards *also* cause this non O/C problem ?

Many thx,
Ben

Then DONT get a DS3 =) Too many issues, enough posts around here to conclude that DS3 got too many surprises for you.

Hi ted3

I know what you are saying, but I'm 99% right - to explain:-

- I have a Big Typhoon Cooler - known to be fine with DS3
- I have Gskill 2gb HZ DDR - known to be fine with DS3
- I have on order a E6600 - known to be fine with DS3
- I have a 600w ST60F Silverstone - known to be fine with *any* O/C rig

The only thing left I need to confirm is this #@#%#@ video card issue.

So ...... ted3 or m0da [ or anyone else ] .... I'm happy to avoid getting a nVidia chipset Video Card provided that ....

Q => if I get a a basic ATi chispet PCI-e card [ ie: X300SE ], will I avoid the no-O/C'ing problem referred to in the DS3 FAQ ?

Thx,
Ben

I don't think it would. Just try it and if it dosn't work then buy a new card.

How would a vidcard affect your overclock unless you're overclocking the PCIe bus? This sounds about as plausible as the VGA OCs better than DVI crap. Set the PCIe bus to '100' instead of 'auto' and buy whatever PCIe vidcard you like.
