Little help for Dum please

my mom needs a new harddrive in her laptop no prob, but I want to port her old harddrive over to my Lacie external, then maybe have her laptop boot from the external and re port back her info onto the new hardrive, I know I can back it up just not sure on how to image back to new drive, which I guess will need to be formatted atleast by xp?
