I was reading around, and heard that the 7900gt cards or any other nvidia card cannot run HDR + AA effects. I was hoping that the 7900gt, after a little overclocking, it would allow me to run oblivian at 1280x1024 with at least 2xaa and 4xaf with HDR, but I also heard that the Nvidia cards drop in larg portions in performance when you apply AA and AF, is this true?. I have gone through 3 RMA's so far with NCIX.com with the x1800gto being faulty and the x1800xl being faulty, and the other x1800xl being faulty and not working. I am worried that Ill end up with a card i regret. Cause i payed quite a bit for it and I want to make sure im actualy getting a half decent card.

nvidia cards can't do AA and HDR at the same time. It's not that they couldn't handle it, they just don't support it.
I would still pick the 7900gt over that X1800XL though...

That's the biggest let down about the nVidia cards. My wife gots a pair of 7900GTX's and it's a shame that they just cannot run HDR with AA. :(

I think bloom looks pretty good too in Oblivion. As said before, current Nvidia cards can't do HDR + AA at the same time. It's just not supported.

Well, I got the choice to send back the 7900gt and get the x1900AIW or the x1800gto2 (16pipelines and 512mb vram, can overclock far) It is a pitty they cant handle both, but at high res, the AA wont really mean a heck of a lot due to more pixels being on the screen already.

I dunno though, but should I just switch?

Another thought just crossed my mind. Even the x1900gt would be outperformed by the 7900gt? if so, then they both wouldnt be able to realy run HDR with AA on. Its just one or the other? cause HDR on oblivian would look better then AA on my guessing is (ive seen HDR, its pretty!)

I am one of those that have had some pretty bad luck with the 7900 GTs so combined with the extra performance of the x1900 you can guess which one would get my vote.

Exactly my situation. :slap: In fact I felt so jaded...

...the AA wont really mean a heck of a lot due to more pixels being on the screen already.
Even at high resolutions there is a noticable necessity for AA.

True. In order to really get the benefits of Oblivion with max settings and HDR+AA, etc. one would truly benefit from an X1900XT or greater.

Nordic hardware's got an ATI video that shows Oblivion with and without Adaptive AA being applied. The difference is truly frightening for those of us that fear the jaggy.

It's been a good few months, but I remember being unable to handle the aliasing even at 1680x1050. Especially on the weapons and stairs. HDR's pretty, but if on NV, I'd pick AA everytime as it distracts and pulls me right out of the game. :(

Funny, was thinking about this while playing today on a 7950.

I disabled AA and turned on HDR.... I had never used HDR before.

Anyway, looking to sell a 7950 :D

I need HDR + AA!

definitely buy the X1800GTO2, it is a X1800XT 512MB with a different bios

yes the nvidia cards take a huge performance hit for enabling AA & AF, not nearly as much as the ati cards. So while nvidia may hold the edge with out AA & AF, with them turned on ati is significantly faster.

i know this is one benchmark, i am not trying to start some ati vs nvidia war

just think of it was food for thought

i wouldnt go x1800 with x19s getting as cheap as they are.
Ive got an x19xt and i love it.
Draws a ton of juice though, water is almost a requirement.

...if you're gonna overvolt it. If you've got a big case with 120's and good airflow, ya can slap an Accelero on there and even clock the 19XT up CCC. Temps should be <80C @ load.

I just saw a 19XT for $270...sheesh!
