Well, lets get the obvious stuff out of the way:
ea support link (http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=6731&p_created=1069191248&p_sid=eBtuzGfi&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9ODEmcF9wcm9kcz03LDEzODgmcF9jYXRzPTU2NiZ wX3B2PTIuMTM4OCZwX2N2PTEuNTY2JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1)
If all drivers and game patches are in order then it could be an issue with your video codecs. The BF2 plays multiple video files after the splash screen. Each logo screen as well as the intro movie are decoded like a regular video file by your codec. So a re-install of said codec may be in order. I prefer FFdshow, but there are plenty others.

I dont understand, your install shouldnt magically work then stop working.....
are you uninstalling and reinstalling a ton of software or emulation drives ?

I have been getting the same thing... A fews weeks ago I was getting major CTD's so I re-installed and patch up to 1.22 and was working great for a weeks until just yesterday (although I usually only play a couple times a week). I tried re-installing and played a quick round of single player 1.0 fine (I was crashing to desktop a bit earlier in both SP and MP w/ 1.22) Then I tried joining some 1.0 servers and got another CTD.
Last night I tried a couple sets video drivers (sometimes with driver cleaner sometimes without), tried different video settings, updated my chipset drivers, Open AL driver update, tweaked memory settings, increased voltages and cooling. Nothing seemed to help. I ran a couple other 3d games and they worked fine...
Not only was I getting CTD's but I also pulled off a couple BSODs with "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area", which kinda points to a memory problem I would think, so i ran windows memtest and nothing came up...
BF2 seems to be th emost problematic game I have ever run, yet I find myself going back to play as it still seems the most fun "team" FPS.
Sometimes I will get in a rut and it won't work then the next day I will come in and everything will be back to normal.

I just reinstalled the game the other day and same damn CTD issue. I check EA forums and it's a HUGE issue. Shame the game still plays like a beta at best and EA doesn't give a :banana::banana::banana:. They could fix the game and make it really good, but instead they make a new one so they can make more money. Pretty sad because bf2 can be fun at times, but now I can't even play.
Just reinstalled vanilla BF2 no special forces no patches no anything and it still CTDs. I played BF2 on this same exact setup back in december only difference was a 7800GT instead of an x1900xt.

It honestly sounds like a driver/directX issue more than the game. If it was a game issue than it probably wouldn't work for anyone.
Have you tried loosening your RAM timings or clocking them down slighly if they are overclocked? I seem to remember BF2 being pretty fickle with overclocks when it launched but I could be crazy

Patch to 1.3
I'm with FUGGER on this. Why are you using 1.22?
1) remove the game
2) delete any left over directories in "my documents" and "program files"
3) Re-install v1.0
4) Full patch to v1.3. NO INCREMENTALS.
This has solved any and all CTD's with BF2 that I have had.
Game is still buggy as hell as everyone says though.

Ok I think i figured out what was wrong. What I did was went into procceses and deleted all the things that were started by me(except explorer). Then when I start-up the game it works. This is kinda of annoying cause I have to do this everytime I want to play BF2.

Update:
I discovered that my problem is occuring due to SLI. I disabled SLI and BF2 ran fine. The weird thing is I can play CoD2 with SLI enabled. 3dmark06 runs with SLI fine too...
WTF is up with that? Could it be my mobo or gpu is goign bad or is it just that BF2 is getting finnicky?

Patch to 1.3
Did that both times full patch no change. 1.4 beta does nothing either. I'm running at x1900xt so I can't blame sli anymore :( Already killed all background apps.

OH one more thing, if you have any of your hard drives set up for power management this will also consistenly lock up BF2 (at least in my experience).

I have had it for a week, no install issues, no startup issues.
The game does tend to crash to desktop once in a blue moon for no aparent reason and I dont really like the sever layout. If you crash and go to find that last server it doesnt seem to be there, seems like it only happens when I have alot of kills too :/
Overall I am very happy with the game tho, as a former marine it reminds me of the old days.
They say the new BF2 (the one thats in beta and takes place in the future) is doing alot better and is problem free so you may like that game. I dunno about myself I like the war time setting on this game, the sound of rounds and explosions going off, and the idea I got it cheap off ebay. I dont wanna pay 50$ for a new game when I just bought this :P
