View Full Version : Anyone have/used both 74gb raptors and seagate 7200.10s in RAID 0?

I run 2x 74gb raptors in RAID 0 right now but was thinking about switching to those new 7200.10 drives. Space is not of concern at all and the only thing that matter is speed. Basically which will boot, install, and load games faster? I've also though about a 4x 15k rpm SCSI drive array on a PERC3 PCIE 4x RAID card, but heat and noise are of concern there. Are 15k RPM drives really that loud?

i currently have 2x74gb 16mb single platter ADFD's Raid0
and 4x320gb 7200.10 Raid5 on an Lsi 300-8x pci-x sata2 controller

for OS & Apps the Raptors raid is the way to go...
Imho for the ~350$ you have to pay..
its the best combination of capacity, transfer rates and access times

the 150 ones are too big for just os & apps (and much more expensive)
and although a 3x36gb setup can reach almost the same str's
it will lose when it comes to access times

scsi are alot more money and you need a controler . seagates are the best dollar per gb . i had 4 raptor 36 and they were the fastest i have ever had . but i like my seagates better more space.

SCSI isn't loud (well, comparing to 150G Raptors :D, but an earbreaker compared to regular SATA drives). Heat? WAY TOO MUCH!
74's have a bit better access times, 150's have quite better trasnfer speeds though. If you need access times, well, think SCSI then if you can keep them quiet/cool; but otherwise, 150's will outperform 74/36 ones disk vs disk (not 1 vs 2 of course)
