E6600 - E6700 weird multi EIST differences

Tested briefly a Retail E6600 and E6700 today and noticed a weird difference.
The E6600 is pack date 08/07, the E6700 is pack date 08/08

On the same board / config ( GB 965 DQ6 ) the E6600 has EIST as an option/ multi not selectable in BIOS; while the E6700 has EIST not as an BIOS option - yet with this one the multi is selectable.

Funny.... well as a visual physical difference - the E6700 has rounded IHS - while the E6600 has sharp edges on IHS - must be the cause :stick: :p:

Both are still B2 step 6 - so latest packdates aren't step 7 - at least for 66/6700 series

eist doesnt have a multiplier that i have seen.
if your refering to the cpu multiplier then i am not sure why you are calling it EIST multi.

i have never seen an EIST multi. but it would be a good idea i guess so instead of always dropping to 6x you can tell it only drop to 8x or 7x...

of course i have an ES so... maybe thats why...

EIST (Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology) is the CPU's ability to drop the multiplier from its default to the lowest available multiplier in windows.

any CPU with EIST on it, can be manipulated to thier lowest available multiplier, most of the time only from windows, but sometimes in bios too.

Well EIST ( Speed Step ) is different from multi selectable in BIOS. When you have EIST as option - you can change the multiplier with programs like Crystal to change the multi. Yet when you don't have EIST - you can't. But the BIOS will give you the option to select the multi manually - if the mobo supports it...

Are you sure you can to change multi in BIOS? On witch board? If is it with 6700 possible i will buy it now ....

With that particular E6700 I can - with yet with that E6600 I can only change it in Windows. Yet I have tested ES and early retail E6700s which DID have EIST enabled and it wasn't possible to change multiplier in BIOS. AFAIK most every board can change the multi in BIOS - if the CPU allows it.

But I have not seen a E6600 yet which allowed me to change multi in BIOS - not to say that they don't exist.

So does disabling it in bios do any long term damage eg. shorten the life of the cpu because it was expected to be enabled?

i can change multi on my 6600 retail B2 just depend on bios not cpu (previous bios version didn't have the max multi option)
