View Full Version : Video of my new 1100cfm case fan

As a pure air cooling guy who owns his own shed I have playing around with fans for a long time now as sound level is not an issue. I started off with 80mm Delta fans and although they did a good cfm of 80mm they only ever cooled the cpu and the area around the cpu.

I then went to a Papst 6212nm fan which is a 170mm fan with 200+ cfm off 12v dc. This is a fantastic fan, loud but not high pitched so more acceptable. It has served me well but the one problem was that although it could cool the cpu and motherboard and RAM it could not give good flow to two SLi video cards as well due to the size and large diameter of motor in the middle causing an area of low pressure. I could never angle it well enough for everything.

However I have now found a Papst fan that solves this problem completely ..the W2E250 280mm 1100cfm 230v fan. With it's larger diameter you do not have any problem cooling the whole of the motherboard and ancillaries. In fact it also cools down next doors tv as well.

I'll be using it with a new Conroe rig and a tuniq tower this winter. As ambient gets down to -5C on average in the UK it should put up the best performance for air cooling for Conroe in the world ... er, probably ..

Here's the video. 80mm delta to the left, 170mm Papst 6212nm in the middle and the new Papst to the right. Sorry for the size, could not be bothered compressing it.

PS Papst make the best PC fans in the world, could you have guessed ? :D

jesus that thing is a beast! It'll probably cut your finger right off at that rpm. With all that pressure why dont you make a duct out of it? It would make a great cold air intake.

Edit: When's the last time you had a hearing test? :p:

jesus that thing is a beast! It'll probably cut your finger right off at that rpm. With all that turbulance why dont you make a duct out of it? It would make a great cold air intake.

On the blow side the blades are angled so that you do not get an edge and instead your digit will bounce off the face of the blade as it turns, so the result is a bad bruise rather than an amputation. I just tested it with my wifes finger and it was ok. Ok, I own up I actually used a carrot, my wife was busy on the phone ( again ! )

I will not think about the other side apart from it will probably dice and slice better than those items on the shopping channel that can make a rosette out of a boiled egg.

Whenever you mount it, would you kindly show us some pics? I myself am interested in how exactly you're going to mount it. Also, if you got a dust shield for it you wouldn't have to worry about fingers and with that kind of CFM you won't have to worry about the filter restricting it's air.

Brings a whole new meaning to Xtreme. Looked up some further specs (http://www.alliedelec.com/Images/Products/Datasheets/BM/EBM_PAPST_INC/Ebm-Papst-Inc_Enclosure-and-Cooling_6000122.pdf) on this to satisfy my curiosity, and they are shocking!

280 x 280 mm; 80 mm; 115 V; 1100 CFM; 60 Hz; 200 W; Tubeaxial; 73 dBA; Pin

It easily draws as much as an overclocked Pentium D. Thank goodness its 230V AC...it'd take quite the power plant to run it otherwise. 73 dBA, yikes, better bring out the earmuffs. :p:

How are you planning on mounting this monster to a Tuniq Tower? I'll be looking forward to this, I don't think anyone has taken air to these extremes yet.

Zardokk
08-17-2006, 01:49 PM
Yeah, as far as I know, the most "extreme" thing you could do with air was take a box fan and blow it into your case or get a 220CFM Delta, but wow...1100CFM...that's just nuts. Let us know what kind of temps that yields (and whether or not it blows your case apart XD).

phelan1777
08-17-2006, 02:16 PM
with some ducting work you could cook a CPU/GPU, MOSFET, and RAM and have a low case temp :-P

Or mount it on the rear of a case and have some serious negative case pressure, literally suck the heat out of a case, okay well maybe I exaggerate a little.

Sick fan man, sick fan.

At that point, the fan doesn't really serve a purpose. 1100CFM is rediculous and unneccesary as a means of cooling. For the money, you should just go for watercooling. I really do like this thread, though, and if you want to do something like this with a big ass fan like that, I suggest it, but a fan like that would make maybe a 7-8C difference in temps at most, assuming that it didn't blow your whole rig away. Anything beyound ~120CFM of so is really unneccessary and you're just gaining noise, not much cooling power. And when you get to the point where you're spending $180 for a fan, it might be time to invest in water cooling. :)

Owen1978
08-18-2006, 01:40 PM
Now if you can get two of those into your case i.e. intake and outake then they would be impressive!

Well why have standard water if you can have xtreme air :) . That fan is nice have you thought about mounting it to the side panel of a stacker it would fit by simply removing the 300mm grill in the side, well if you haven't thought about it I certainly have and the noise certainly can't be much worse than the whine of a Vantec tornado :p:.

I think some people have got the wrong end of the stick here, I'm not attaching it to a Tuniq tower I am using it in a shed with a motherboard that is not cased with the fan about 1 foot away from the motherboard blowing air over the entire rig and NO fans on the Tuniq or chipset or even gpu cards. Those little fans just suck power away from where it should be going, ie the cpu and the gpu and the chipset.

Somebody mentioned water cooling .. I did that and got down to -33C from a modified Proline freezer with 8 pints of meths and 3 gallons of glycol mixture and a Hydor L45 pump but that is not the point, the point is I love standing out in my shed over winter from 9pm till 3am seeing how low things can go au natural air cooled :)

This is XS after all !

Somebody wanted a video of a carrot stuck in it to see what happens so here you are.

www.aocb77.dsl.pipex.com/fanny3.wmv

You have to know what you are doing with fans so don't try that at home by the way ;) it was just to show a point ..always best to let them spin down naturally.

get one of those huge fans that are several feet in diameter (think: letterman blowing ping pong balls at crowd) and mount your case to that.

lol, mount your case to the fan, not mount the can to your case.

how did that thing NOT blow itself off the table/counter?
i started laughing after the 6th time the fan's spinning looked to change direction (fps vs. RPM values)
what is the RPM on that anyway?

next stop: C130 turboprop engine.

1100cfm... make sure you don't suck air out of your case too fast or blow air into your case too fast, it might implode/explode (depending which)

actually, don't use a case. put it on a board, and place the fan 15cm away to just blow on the entire motherboard. you're set.

you should put the edge of a playing card or business card or something similar to the fan and show us what happens

i think it may be wired backwards, as axial fans always blow towards the motor supports, and spin the way the blades are designed to go

any info on this? IDK why it would ever spin like it did in the video, with the blades turing the opposite way from the norm (should always turn counter-clockwise from the suction/non-motor side)

yea, you can have a counter-rotating fan, but no matter what, a axial fan like that will always blow towards the motor supports

and no nicks, you can't do that with any fan - some AC fans will do that though, as they lack the reverse current protection that most small electronic motors have (eg: 12v fan motors)

You're correct, with this fan you can make it rotate both ways as you have two connections for live. Putting it the normal way round was so powerful that the fan started moving backwards along the table whilst I took the video, so I just swapped it over thinking nobody would notice :p:

In reverse you get 60% of the air flow and about 60% of the noise but I am not sure whether in the long run this would cause it problems. 600-700cfm is still pretty good after all.

Here's the video ..it is in two parts, the first show the fan "walking" backwards across the table due to the force generated. It's a bit short as I had to grab the power lead to stop it hitting my lcd at the last moment.

The second part shows it being the shed doorman.

www.aocb77.dsl.pipex.com/fan3.wmv

I shall be putting it back to reverse operation ASAP .. it will be excellent come winter with ambient at 0C and a tuniq tower ..I'm hoping for 4Ghz off a Conroe, but that depends on the conroe of course.
