What's a good way to lap the IHS on my Opteron? I can't figure out a way that doesn't involve breaking or bending pins in some way or otherwise damaging the cpu. I can't think of anything intelligent short of popping off the IHS, sanding it, and then remounting it...but that would be a pain in the ass :stick:

How do you lap the IHS?

find non-electrostatic foam and use that to hold it.

But usually I lap heatsinks by taping the sandpaper down and moving the heatsink across the sandpaper...

So I should secure the CPU down on some foam and do the opposite? What about the foam that comes in the plastic AMD shell?

Hmmm

The foam pad that the CPU comes in. Put the CPU on the pad and press the pins into the foam. Then you can invert the CPU and rub it over the sand paper, and the pins are totally secured in the foam. Then peel the foam off the pins when you're done.

Might look something like this when you're done

Ditto.
Still do it the same way, sandpaper taped, or whatever (I wet sand, so I have a flat cutting board under it) and just do as he says....just make sure not to bend the pins! Easy enough, eh?

Edit:
Your question: "How do I not bend the pins?"
Answer: "just be careful, dont bend them"

You should tape the sandpaper to GLASs so you know its flat. Just hold the sides of it and sand on the sandpaper.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Sounds tedious, but I'll give it my best shot.
