Since GigaByte is making a lot of a progress in fixing issues, and the faq is being written from the very early appearance of DS3 on the market, some issues are already fixed by a new bios (some 7600GS, D9 problems). Be sure to first upgrade your bios, then check whether the issue is still present, if so read more. Links to bioses, betas and retail, are at the bottom of this FAQ.

[Q] Will my Nina+ fit on DS3?
[A] Yes, there is no need to worry, everything works fine. AFAIK Ninja+ is the best air cooling solution for Core2Duo. People on E6300 fsb 490(x7) 1.5VCore get <70*C load with a low rpm fan. There may be better but they are all louder and more expensive...
[Q] Is it normal that my chipset is soooo damn hot?
[A] Yes and no, on stock settings, the radiator is very, very hot. And it’s quite ok. When o/c’ing it’s good to replace the radiator with an active cooling or to put some fan. 80mm 5V will do.
[Q] Why can’t I overclock at all?
This issue is often mistaken with the issue below. Be sure to read this explanation.
Symptoms of no o/c’ing at all (may be one, may be all):
Cannot change PCIe bus speed, after changing to anything from Auto the system resets in POST before mem testing.
Cannot change fsb because system resets as above.
Changing any V in BIOS doesn’t make any difference in o/c.
Changing timing in BIOS doesn’t make any difference in o/c
Changing in my mind means ex. 267fsb (stock 266), 265fsb and so on. These are slightly (and more significant) changes which cannot be done. This is not a problem of >450fsb or sth. This is a problem of no o/c at all!
This is not a problem of a fsbwall – this is not for you if you have already overclocked even a 1Mhz!
[A] There are several possible causes of this problem:
ONE – BIOS:
look below at disabling the Legacy USB storage detect option in BIOS and UPGRADE your BIOS.
TWO – VGA:
Your VGA card is probably making MB not to overclock. Try buying some crappy PCI /not PCIe/ VGA 1MB card (or 2, 4 MBs:) ) and putting it in, booting with only PCI VGA. It worked for me, I could overclock and when I finished I put my 7600GS inside. Everything is working quite ok :) If not, just try another video card but a different model.
THREE – RAM:
This is the least well known issue today. I guess... replace ram and see if it helps o/c’ing... If so... just buy new sticks ;/ Sorry
[Q] What should I do to overclock more? – a fsbwall
[A] First of all Disable all special features in bios, if you don’t use LPT, disable it. The chipset would very appreciate you not to have to be working so hard :) Then Disable in Advanced BIOS Features everything starting from Limit CPUID Max to 3, ending at Virtualization Technology (including these two mentioned). Then at Integrated Peripherals disable Legacy USB storage detect – it’s an option which is required only if you have na USB hard drive. Set PCIe to 100Mhz, timings to 5-5-5-15 (or other high timings your mem is working with), set x2 for mem speed, set +0.1V for MCH, set 1.5V (or higher) for CPU – to see if it’s not a cpu fault. You may also disable everything under PC Health Status menu... Finally, unplug all USB devices. Hope it helps! If no (for those >450fsb) it means the system overlockability has ended :) or mother board doesn’t like so much your ram or vga... Try then borrowing, and replacing to see if it works...
usb mouse - zero overclock
no usb mouse - FULL OC potentional
For those of you with a wall at 380-390Mhz, I got past that wall by fitting a 40mm fan to the northbridge heatsink. The board now does 450mhz without a problem. Might be an alternative to RMA. :)
update: some people report new F4 bios to rise fsbwall for them ;)
[Q] Why the hell do I see CAS3 (CL3) in CPU-Z while I set in bios CL4/CL5?
[A] Some say the MB makes all ram boot at CL3, some say it’s a bios issue when telling the data to the programs under Windows. I guess it’s the second. Mainly because not all memory could boot at CL3 and what is more, there are highly no memories that would boot at ~500fsb with CL3 ;) So it’s pretty much a bios issue, which we hope to be fixed soon. Just don’t worry :) update: get bios F4E (or never), it fixes the CAS problem.
[Q] What is the problem with DS3 and nVidia cards?
[A] Some nVidia cards prevent this MB from overclocking at all :) Ex. Galaxy 7600GS Zalman edition 1.2ns, see the no overclocking at all problem.
[Q] What is the problem with DS3 and D9 memories?
[A] This, and other GigaByte MBs like DS4 and DQ6 are very fastidious. They, don’t like the best DDRIIs on the market nowadays ;) D9 are known to be Winbond for ddr2 slots memory, tight timings, high frequency. GigaByte Mobos don’t like, for sure, Good Ram nonPRO 667 mem (D9). But these are only to be bought in Poland and/or Germany. The rest is pretty likely to be working well, but look below!
[Q] What is the problem with memories and DS3?
[A] Some memories require 2.0V to boot. Standard DS3 stock VDimm is 1.8V. Simply after a CMOS reset the system won’t boot... If you happened to have such mem, replace them. Or buy some shi++y lowcost mem and put it in to boot, change VDimm and replace with your modules to continue o/c.
[Q] Do I really need a VGA PCI card to overclock?
[A] It depends what is making your system crappy. Sometimes it’s a VGA, sometimes it’s a mem, sometimes these are bios settings. My personal search was: BIOS, VGA, MEM, ordered like that, because changing settings in bios, costs nothing, buying VGA was like 10zl (~3$). Luckily I didn’t have to replace ram.
[Q] What about undervoltage?
[A] Core 2 Duo CPUs have a a very great overlockable potential. They can boot even 150% times faster on the stock VCore. Sometimes it’s profitable to undervolt the cpu to get lower temp and still have system running stable.
[Q] My temps are high, so high... 50*C idle. What to do?
[A] This is an abnormal situation. Check your cooling, maybe put some new thermal paste and try another cooler... This is quite good: http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm so is the Ninja+ cooler http://www.scythe-eu.com/products/cpu/ninja_plus/scnj-1000P.php.
[Q] Why is Gigabyte doing nothing to fix these issues? Can it be done only by a bios upgrade?
[A] Remember that Conroe is a brand new technology. It appeared on marked 2 weeks ago. They are doing their bests at GigaByte to make everything works. They have already fixed few issues, we are waiting for new bioses to several next be fixed :)
[Q] My MB keeps restarting after changing anything in BIOS, is that normal?
[A] As GigaByte says on their website it’s normal. It’a a part of intelligent overclocking system, which keeps system booting even if you set to high / tight parameters during o/c. If, lets say, you want to made it boot at 500fsb, it would reset 2-3 times and come back to stock settings, letting you know the fsb is too high.
[Q] My MB boots at 66Mhz fsb
[A] Upgrade your bios to F3 or F4. There was an fsb issue in F1 bios.
[Q] In windows there are only few IRQ in use – many devices use the same IRQ
[A] GigaByte posted to one of the XS forum members a reply saying there is nothing wrong in having few devices on one IRQ. The theory is different, however, noone has reported problems with having few devices on one IRQ on DS3. If you want, you can change in windows (Control Panel, System, Device Manager? – I’ve got polish windows ;) )
[Q] My CD/DVD is working soooo slowly, what to do?
[A] There is a problem of not enabling DMA mode in windows on DS3. Firstly, check this settings under windows, select DMA and reboot. Then try to install newest drivers from GigaByte website. It should help. Next time installing windows, make sure you have got the newest drivers on fdd. Also make sure you’ve got newest BIOS. Mine has somehow fixed itself after upgrading bios and installing drivers from CD... I’m not 100% sure what causes this.
On the CD/DVD drive issue..I was having issues too, even after installing the latest firmware and software from cd. I updated from bios F2 to F4c and besides there being some windows problem which required a system restore in safe mode...the new bios in conjunction with latest firmware seemed to do the trick for playing DVDs with VLC, all three i tested work now. However...WMP seems to read there is no disc on the drive still, but this may likely be a software issue using wmp 9 installed with windows-i should update.
[Q] Where to get BIOS files?
[A] Try official GigaByte website, then for F4C, F4E (beta bioses) go here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=109719. Or there is a mirror by Cranox: http://www.cranox.com/Gigabyte/DS3/ thx! :)
[Q] Is it normal that the system will reboot during its first power on after BIOS memory setting changed ? (965P-DQ6, 965P-DS4, 965P-DS3,965P-S3) – FROM GB’S FAQ
[A] For 965P-DQ6, 965P-DS4, 965P-DS3, 965P-S3 motherboard, if the memory setting is not the chipset spec of 800/ 667/533 MHz in the BIOS setting during system installation, then the system will re-write the initial motherboard parameter when the first boot after BIOS seeting. After the re-write is done, the system will reboot. The shutdown and reboot after the first power on is normal situation.
[Q] Is it normal that the system will reboot during its first power on? ( 965P-DS3 and 965P-S3 )– FROM GB’S FAQ
[A] For 965P-DS3 and 965P-S3 motherboard, during the first power on after the system is installed, the system will reset the initial BIOS and Chipset parameter based on the system configuration and then reboot the system. The shutdown and reboot after the first power on is normal situation
[Q] Windows crashes when I start Adobe Audition, Adobe Encore DVD, Adobe Premiere Elements, or Adobe Premiere Pro – FROM GB’S FAQ
[A] Please upgrade Realtek HD audio driver to latest version, and you can download this driver from Realtek website at http://www.realtek.com.tw
[Q] I cannot burn DVD-RW while I can burn DVD-R. I’m using Nero.
[A] Uninstall GigaByte drivers, and GigaByte software. Not sure, at the moment which particular one causes this. AND Update your bios to >=F3 Please PM me somebody.
Uninstalled gigabyte drivers except sound, lan and chipset, works fine.
yes it would seem such included ds3 software such as ETC, ET5, Icool, etc. dont do much other than make things more luckly to F up. I uninstalled them all but @Bios.
I think the dvd+rw (pioneer 111d) problem I experienced was actually the fault of bios f3 and not the drivers as I previously said.
I have a DS3. With my Celeron installed I could burn with Nero no problem. Once I put in my E6600 I couldn't burn anything and Nero would crash. From Add/Remove Programs I uninstalled the Gigabyte Raid Configurer, rebooted, and let XP search the internet for missing drivers. I chose the Gigabyte raid driver from the list XP found and now Nero 7 works fine.
[Q] I have disabled EIST but my multiplier keeps dropping. Why is my multiplier dropping? How to lock multiplier?
[A] This is an Intel function which reduces heat and power consumption in idle. May be problematic if you demand high core speed (more power) at once – it takes milliseconds for the CPU to ‘gain speed’ (up the multiplier) which is basically the time needed for bios to react – more power needed –> change multiplier
To disable it set in bios the EIST and C1E options both to disabled. I am not 100% sure which one does what, they are basically the same options ;) The multiplier would lock. Check it ex. in CPUz under Windows. Please PM me somebody if you know the theory and can explain the EIST and C1E function.
[Q] I get so much of a vdroop, is something not right? My VCore drops to ~1.17V
[A]
this is Normal, the first part of your question, where the voltage drops from 1.325 to 1.312, is absolutely normal. every board on the planet, has some level of variation for voltage, the amount your seeing here, is perfectly fine.
it's the VDroop, that most Intel Boards suffer from, that drives people nuts... set 1.5 volts in bios... get 1.44 volts in windows, get 1.39 volts under load... thats a really annoying feature that every Intel board released for the last 5 years has had, its called "V-Droop".
there is no fix for this through bios.
the only partial fix to it, is called a VDroop Mod. Risky if your not familiar with a soldering iron, and not the most beneficial mod one can do either, but its a nice mod, if your serious about your overclocks.
the second part of this question deals with a feature called C1E State.
when thats enabled, the Voltage to CPU drops to about 1.175 volts or close, when the CPU is at Idle... even if EIST is disabled.
this is the second form of "cooling" options intel has on thier latest CPU's.
if you want your Max multiplier always active, and the Voltage to stay near 1.3 volts or whatever you set it to, disable EIST and C1E in bios.
[Q] How do I flash bios?
[A] First, read on GigaBytes website. Then use:
-Hook up a floppy drive to your DS3
-Copy the official BIOS file to a floppy
-Insert floppy
-Boot PC
-Hit "Del" to enter BIOS
-Hit "F8" to enter Qflash.
-Select "Flash from floppy"
-Follow onscreen prompts to flash.
-Reboot when complete
-Enter BIOS, load fail-safe
-Reset CMOS.
Done.
or @BIOS under windows.
BE SURE TO DO FLASHING AT STOCK SETTINGS, NOT OVERCLOCKED
[Q] Hidden BIOS menu? How do I enable additional settings?
[A] If you are noob please press ctrl+f1 and check what’s changed ;)
If you are not and have noticed one menu extra go to: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1669860 and read more. Right now it’s a mystery ;)
[Q] DS3 is showing my DVD drive & DVD-RW as SCSI. Should I be worried?
[A] The DS3, like most 965P mobos, use a JMicron SATA/IDE controller chip that Windows sees as a SCSI device. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. - Fred_Pohl post nr 3 - http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1688605&postcount=3 :)
Sorry for my bad English ;)
And found on forum. THX GUYS!
i'd like to post my findings that i made today...hope it'll help...
1. i'm still using the 7600gt to OC and to my surprise, when i switched it from DVI to vga output, the OC CAN be done. this may prove that probably my gfx actually have problem.
2. i'm able to OC using single channel of ram and not dual channel ie. using only 1 stick. i've ran dual channel to OC and it worked before, but somehow or rather, now only 1 stick will work with OC. both rams passed memtest. my opinion would be might be the value select ram is a bit too crappy to the board's liking.
3. try not to plug in USB mouse. my board is able to OC without USB mouse. Ps2 mouse will do just fine. this also applies to keyboard.
4. when i OC with all the above conditions, the enabling of usb legacy support doesn't really come into play. i guess it's not affecting mine.
that's all that i've found out for today. i'm still not OC-ing my board cos no PS2 mouse. btw, i'm getting another replacement gfx and hope to post more findings.
Warning :
DS3 Hates Forton Powersupply , no boot.
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 is Not Compatible with Fotron 350w Aurora & Fortron 500w BlueStorm (i think all Fortron :( )
Again my tips for those hitting FSB walls are
ONE: Try putting PCIE Freq. at AUTO. It has given me nearly 100FSB more than with it locked at any number.
TWO: Try lowering the vdimm if you have it at +0.2 or higher. I get my best results at 0.1V
All the other things I could say have been said many times already, but not these two.

I just intsalled the board today with a P4-640 that I had running on an Asus P5WD2 Premium - the 955 model. My CPU oc isn't the issue, its the southbridge - and the lack of features I'm finding. Intel says the 965P has the Storage Matrix (RAID) but I don't see the <CTRL-I> message to bring up the RAID controller. The IDE connector is attached to a Gigabyte controller and SLOW AS WORM DIRT. Putting my IDE CD-ROM drives on a IDE to SATA adapter doesn't work, the BIOS won't recognize them - no matter what jumper position the optical drives are in.
I'm loosing faith in this board. Help restore it.
You can also add link to mods section, including pencil mods :)

You'll probably need to update your bios to fc4 => http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=109719. Did you make sure that you went into bios and set it to ide/raid? Also are the sata harddrive connected to the purple slot? If all that is done, there should be a prompt, after the first boot screen to press ctrl+g.
There is an issue with sata+raid that causes ide drive to operate in pio mode. Use the sata drivers on gigabyte website when your installing windows...

Nice quide. But I need my 7950GX2, both USB mouse and keyboard because they work the best in the USB ports as they Logitech G7 and G15. If I try to use the in the PS ports they won't work. I have a E6400 at stock speeds and this sucker is faster in most of benchmarks than a 4400+ at 2.7ghz I had before I got this intel setup. I seem to can't up the FSB at all though.

I was using Corsair PC2-6400 at 5-5-5-15 and not getting good results. I'm going to GUESS that my board was bad. I could not get a Windows install to start and overclocking went the same as a lot of folks. The sys would reboot back to default settings, and yes - i had an nvidia 7900GTX. And like someone else mentioned, I use USB 2.0 for my G15/G7 combo. Putting them on the PS2 just isn't going to happen. So I guess neither is an upgrade until the big POP happens and somebody makes a board worth the cardboard it's shipped in.

Still can't boot with OCZ800 RAM. Everyone seems to say that putting in some cheap ram and updating the BIOS then upping the DIMM Voltage +.2 or +.3 makes it work (which I did), but it still does the exact same thing after all that, even with one stick OCZ in. Fans start up, but I get no signal on the monitor and don't get the startup beep.
Any suggestions? Using a Seasonic 430W PSU, MSI 7600GT Card, and E6300.

for all who has problem not being able to OC at all, pls remove all your USB connections (working or not) and only plugged in the most basic connections, PS2 keyboard (pure pS2 not with converter) and VGA cable (not dvi and not converter).
I think i did write that?:> maybe i didn't make myself clear i wrote to unplug all usb
"Mine has somehow fixed itself after upgrading bios and installing drivers from CD... I’m not 100% sure what causes this. "
However...WMP seems to read there is no disc on the drive still, but this may likely be a software issue using wmp 9 installed with windows-i should update.
i'll put it in faq
updated.

Cool_dude: if Gskill is about 1.9V it should do perfectly fine unless the DS3/4 doesn't like that kind of ram. pS: most people only have problems with the PC26400 DDR2800 rams cuz they're usually higher voltage.

[Q] What is the problem with DS3 and D9 memories?
[A] This, and other GigaByte MBs like DS4 and DQ6 are very fastidious. They, don’t like the best DDRIIs on the market nowadays D9 are known to be Winbond for ddr2 slots memory, tight timings, high frequency. GigaByte Mobos don’t like, for sure, Good Ram nonPRO 667 mem (D9). But these are only to be bought in Poland and/or Germany. The rest is pretty likely to be working well, but look below!
how common is this?
Just put an order on Team group with D9GMH

At least thats what I hope for :) It has 6-phase power compared to the 3-phase of DS3, actually the board seems to have more things in common with the DQ6 than the DS3.
Havn´t seen much overclocking on it so far but what I have seen looks good: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=108937

As there still seems to be some confusion about whether or not the DS3 overwrites the ram timings I would like to report my findings here.
I have read what Lestat wrote about the subject but to be honest I did not really understand what exactly his proof was, maybe my english is too bad.
Anyway, I have a
DS3 (F4C)
2GB Mushkin PC6400 5-5-5-15
Radeon 1900XT
The Mushkin is pretty good for the Money, being able to do CL4 at DDR800 and sometimes going up above DDR900 at 5-5-5-15.
Here is the Test:
I set VDimm to +0,3, all other Voltages remain untouched.
The FSB is set to 400MHZ
The ram is set to 2XFSB, making it run at DDR800
(the Problem only turns up when running the Ram 1:1 with the FSB, which is hard to prefent for overclocking)
So first I start with the ram timings set to auto. The System starts, but breaks down during Windows loading screen. Three times, so I give up.
I set the timings to CL6. Same outcome.
I set them to CL5, same outcome. (Tried five times now)
I set them to CL4, and the system starts. Not only does it start, it is able to run two instances of prime for 39 minutes before reporting a mistake.
I repeatet the test twice. Same outcome.
So why is it that CL4 is much more stable than CL5 and CL6? Easy, it is because CL4 is actually the lowest timing I can possibly get. Cl5 and Cl6 are reportet as CL3 by CPUZ when I start at FSB266, and it is right. CL4 is reportet as CL4 by CPUz, and it is right.
I just felt It is important to post that here as I do not want the Gigabyte engineers to get funny ideas about having a working bios when they read here:rolleyes:
There is a guy at www.forum-3dcenter.org who has the same Problem with the same Ram/Boar combination, so I consider this matter to be clear now. Let me know if I have made mistakes here, If not I would like you to try yourself (or anyone who has the Issues for that matter) and correct the Section in the Faq, as I am sure by now that this is clearly a case of overwritten data in the Bios and I would like engineers and customers to know.

Kampfflummi
08-10-2006, 06:47 AM
Ok I just testet the same with F3 and got the same results.
Also, I testet 1:1 against 4:5. At 400FSB that means DDR1000, but CPUZ reports the right timings at 4:5 so I figured it worth a try.
To make it short; DDR1000 beats DDR800 in Case of stability. Funny...
If your shots are real all I can guess is that the real ram issue on this Board is linked to certain sticks only, which should be clear by now, while the wrong showing of the Timings occurs always.
btw I am impressed your sticks do DDR1000 at all, is it stable?

Quite stable. I'm on my second DS3 right now (the shot before was on my 1st DS3). This one is not as good as the first and doesn't seem to like "Auto" settings or the 1:1 dividers. I have to use the 4:5 dividers to achieve stability. Running in "daily use" at 408 FSB now on an e6400. RAM is at 1020 odd 5-7-7-24 2.0v.

08-10-2006, 07:35 AM

Quick question, how hard is it to flash the bios on the DS3. I'm thinking of getting it and if it's going to be a pain to flash, than I will wait to make sure that a decent bios is shipped with the board. I've never actually flashed bios, so I'm not sure how hard it is.
I'm getting the same problems as Kampfflummi. There is only a problem when using the 1:1 ratio. All other ratios seem fine to me. When I use 4:5 ratio my ram is stable at ~460Mhz, when using exactly the same timings but changing the ratio to 1:1, the system won't even load windows. Something has to be wrong with the 1:1 ratio at least for some kinds of Ram. I'm using G.Skill DDR2 PC2-6400 NR Series 5-5-5-15 ram

I've got a question about this mobo and decided to post here instead of creating a thread, but I haven't found an answer.
When I boot up, the system powers on (fans begin to spin), then stalls (fans pause for 1-2 seconds, then the fans start spinning again normally and it POSTS.
Is this normal? I just installed this DS3 w/ a 6400. Using box cooler for now.

08-10-2006, 10:18 AM
I think in the FAQ here there are some questions related to how the board will go on and off, once or many times in a row. So feel better that it's normal for various reasons for this mobo to do this. So check out the fact to find out if one of the answers about it restarting clears things up for yo.
But does your mobo post fine from then on after the initial power on?
I can't give anymore feedback because I have the ZX GSkill ram which doesn't work so my system so it powers on and off endlessly right now until my new ram that will arrive later today.

I noticed that the memory dividers aren't really stable. If I run at stock speeds using the 667mhz or 800mhz dividers it crashes my system. But I can run using the 1:1 divider at 333 mhz FSB, giving me the same 667mhz on the memory and everything works fine. What is going on?

changelog F3 to F4c ( download here : http://www.venomousmofo.com/XtremeSystems/BIOS/Gigabyte/DS3/965PDS3.F4C )
"this bios greatly improves compatibility with ram"
"PIO MODE problem is fixed with F4 bios"
" You may have to boot with 1 stick of ram to get the board to post out of the box, then flash the bios and try both sticks "
"can allow to use 2.1V ram and++"
"you need to turn off all unnecessary things in the BIOS, USB legacy, parallel ports etc"
"DMA mode is fully working" to check this : Go to device manager from system. Under IDE ATA/Atapi controller, right click on primary ide channel (maybe multiple) for properties. Should be under advanced settings tab =>transfer mode.
Lestat ""the F3 bios would reset the bios and let you boot into the bios if you overclocked too far. the F4 bios isnt letting you do that. you have to reset the bios. i dont care for that but hey they are making progress and its a beta so..."
" Due to the 4MB cache and hitting the 1066 memory strap earlier, these CPUs have not been clocking as high on the P965 boards (9x410 or so) unless you drop the mulitplier which defeats the purpose of buying one. The bios revisions are coming in hot and heavy right now"

So I gues F4c is the preferred DS3 BIOS right now because CPU-Z showes the information correctly with this bios. Ok
My DS3 came with the F1 bios. It booted right up with a E6400 and 2x1GB of OCZ Platinum PC6400 (4-5-4-15). I set the Vdimm to +.2v and flashed to the F4C bios and it was fine until I OC'd it too far and had to clear the CMOS. Since then everytime I try to power on the fans start to spin and the mobo promptly turns off. No beeps, no keyboard lights, nada. Removing the battery doesn't help. I tried some PNY PC4300 I had laying around (yeah, I know it has to run at PC5400) and the same thing happens.
Is this normal behavior if the ram doesn't have enough voltage? I expected to get some beeps if the ram was the problem. I'm trying to decide whether to buy some cheap PC5400 to boot with or just RMA this buggy piece of crap. :(

That's what I'm afraid of. RMAs are a PITA and I don't know which board to replace this DS3 with.

I got F4C from a link posted here. It did work fine until I cleared the CMOS. I suspect that while my ram could boot with F1 at 1.8V, it might not with F4C. Perhaps F1 incorrectly read the spd as 5-5-5 and F4C correctly reads it as 4-5-4? I'm guessing here.

i got a question :
does anyone know a good fan control for ds3 + boxed cooler ?
my starts to run full speed at around 60-65°C which is REALLY high in my opinion.
i would like to have it run full speed allready at 50-55°C. any possibility to do so ?
the fan control in easy tune is greyed out for me....
ah yes : bios is on auto, so i could set it to "disabled" but then fan runs full then speed ALL the time, and that's not acceptable.

Memory should be fine, that's what I'm running in mine.
Try the usual stuff...clear bios, take out battery for a min and put back in, reseat everything.
edit: also make sure you didn't forget the 4 pin PCI-E power cable to the MB

I have the same CPU, Mobo and Ram. If this is the first time using the mobo, it may only have the F1 bios, so I would try one stick of memory if you haven't. And when turning the PSU off and pulling the cable from the back, try pushing the case power button several times too before doing anything. So see if one stick works, if it still does nothing try a different slot that hasn't been used yet with one stick.
I had just started a thread with some odd behavior from the ram here:

Looking for a decent fan controller too myself - CPU temps are ok, but not for overclocking. My freezer 7 pro only hits 1000RPM though, it should do triple.
is 49C system temp OK for OCing? Was hitting 61C without a fan on it.

Ok, well got the ds3 a while ago, my E6400 wednesday, and my gskill 2gbnr RAM came today. i was worried this ram wouldn't work becuase it didn't for a few others but it has booted up great everytime!
MY problem is the mouse. It is a usb laser mouse (the logitech g5). It worked great during windows installation but then I installed a few drivers from the gigabyte disc and re-booted and it wont work. It doesn't even light up anymore unless I use my usb -> ps2 adapter, then it will light up but not work. I tried enabling usb mouse in bios and that didnt work.
I think it is that INF updater (it says it controls usb plug and play when you install it). I thought I would need that but it is most likely causing the trouble. I have been trying to unistall it with just the keyboard but running the installer again doesn't do anything and it doesn't appear to be in add/remove programs. It could have been one of the other usb drivers I guess (like the ICH8 one) but I don't know. Can anyone offer any help? Thanks.

I wouldn't say it's a gamble, but you definately have to do your homework. BIOS updates have been helping a lot, and if you research well enough you can find out a lot of the fixes for issues people have been seeing.

Ok I got my system running and everything, right now i'm on the F1 BIOS and i'm just wondering a few things.
This was my first time putting thermal paste on a cpu/HSF and it was a big pain in the ass. I did it as directed on the Arctic tutorial. I put a rice-sized glob of it in the middle of the proc and spreaded it around with my finger wrapped in seran wrap in a circular motion until it almost covered the whole top of the CPU. Then I put on the HSF (stock) and I found it to be a HUGE pain in the ass to get on. I would get 2 of the plastic things popped in but then the other 2 wouldn't go in until I pushed them so hard it didn't sound good on my mobo.
Well anyways, I was wondering if idling at 40-43C is bad for stock cooling?

Delas52,
I had my mouse also quit working on me after doing a reinstall, I have a Logitech MX518 & after I was installing some updates & the INF driver my mouse just quit. It would light up on Post but once it got into windows it would not light up again. What I did to get it working again was I went into device manager & noticed that all my UB root hubs had yellow exclamation marks by them. I just removed the hubs & rebooted & let windows redetect them & everything started to work again. I think it is possibly a bug with the inf drivers.

i did exaggerate on purpose. my point was to show that no o/c at all doesn’t mean the board is crappy, it means it doesn’t like components and will o/c some mhz with another set of mem and gpu...

The problem was that when I had the controller plugged in it forced me to boot up to the xpress recovery 2. Now I am able to boot up to windows, but it doesn't recognize any of the devices like if nothing is plugged in. I did the usual and the drivers are in and theres no conflicts. Which SATA ports are you guys using for over 400+ FSB.
I can't pass dual prime with 400 x 6 = 2.4ghz or 400 x 7 = 2.8 ghz with an E6400. But it is dual prime stable with 350 x 8 = 2.8 ghz.
I have tried switching to a Matrox PCI card and using a PS/2 mouse but no luck. I think it might be the SATA?

Thought I would share my results and maybe get some advice. My system is:
DS3
E6400
2x1GB OCZ DDR2-800 Plat XTC
7900GT
Big Typhoon
etc...
First, I had to grab a stick out of a dell to boot, then once flashed to F4E I haven't had any troubles running the OCZ at all, multiple CMOS clears, etc. I messed around with it for a good while and have concluded there is a solid wall at 399/400 FSB and it's the DS3 that is limiting me. No matter what multipler, MCH/FSB/PCI/Vcore/Vdimm voltage, auto memory SPD, manual SPD, PCI-E freq, and then many combinations of extra settings can get me past 400 in bios or in windows using easy tune. I can boot and am 32M stable at 395 with vcore at 1.4, but I can't even post at 400. I feel that the CPU has a lot left but I'm not sure how I can go about getting an exchange for the MB (what do I say as an excuse?). I think I just got a crappy MB. Anyways, any suggestions are useful, but I've tried pretty much every combination of settings with no luck.

So the new BIOS fixes the Cas3 problem?
Was it that the old BIOS always forced Cas 3 ? or was it just CPU-Z misreporting?
Obviously, I've tried the Ctrl+F1 trick to manually set it.
Cas 3-5 always shows up in CPU-Z as Cas 3.
Cas 6 makes the computer go in to a reboot loop, that requires a Clear CMOS!
If so I think thats what may be limiting my overclock, right now. (I've got some cheap DDR667 that doesn't go very high at Cas3)
BTW, was that in the first post? You have to hit Ctrl+F1 while at main BIOS menu, then when you go in to the MIT section you'll have all the "secret" advanced options! :)

timmings are set manually and auto

As in many cases not all users need to have the same problems. Please read my little test concerning this again, I do not have any other Idea than the CAS Problem actually being a problem, at least for some. Now with F4e I can run this thing at 375FSB without touching any Voltages besides memory, running at 1:1. Now thats an improvement over not being able to overclock more than to 300FSB with every other Bios before. this board definitely has a personality of its own...
one more thing i've noticed is that the Northbridge does NOT get hot
even @ vmch~1.3/ 380fsb
although the little 4cm fan i've put there does a decent job
i still suspect poor contact with the HS
gonna try Thermalatke SpiritII asap

i've been testing a DS3 with a B2 6600 since yesterday...
tried all available bios (official and non official)
currently testing with F4E
unfortunately i only have two OCZ 2GB kits to play with...
which can't actually work at their default speeds
the first kit (2x1gb 667 gold)
wont boot at fsb=333 regardless of timmings
and the second (2x1gb 800 XTC Platinum)
is having difficulties reaching its stock speeds fsb~390
all test are done with a multi of 7 or lower so that the cpu freq is not the limiting factor in any way
timmings are set manually and auto
and voltage is always set manually as OCZ recomends in their website
Do you guys know if all the secondary memory timmings are set correctly when in auto mode?
i can't find any other explanation as to why the board can't run two sets of ram at even their stock speeds
any suggestions are welcome
Do NOT assume that the board is capable of 390 FSB. Most likely the limiting factor is the motherboard and not the memory. I have the same 6400 platinum sticks, and I can pass memtest at 400 FSB but I will fail dual prime in windows at the same speeds. I'm almost certain that some of the FSB walls (even those under 400) people have been hitting are caused by the motherboard and not the other components.
I just exchanged my DS3 and I haven't tested the memory dividers on this particular board, but they seem to be buggy as well. Running at stock speeds and running the divider so the memory is at 800mhz will allow me to pass memtest but fail dual prime. I tried with 667 and 800 with no luck, and this memory is rated for 800. I have also tried a pair of Corsairs with the same result.

One could almost think my stability issues were solved the same time this little displaying bug dissapeared. Now THAT'S a coincidence...
strange,
i don't want to argue, but you are the first person who says it'a s bug in bios... we'll see when more ppl report what they gained by F4e
it is likely that i'm wrong ;)

I've come to the same conclusion about that same memory/MB combination, it's fine to atleast 800, probably even higher, but for the life of me I can't even get the MB to boot at 396+ but it is stable enough to boot and run anything for a while at 395 (haven't tried prime for a long period of time yet). I've tested this out with 6x, 7x, and 8x multipler and all hit the same wall, so it's not my CPU and I've ruled out the memory. I've e-mailed for a RMA exchange, they should give me one and then I'll ship it out. Hopefully mwave's RMA process is quick, I'm sick of waiting.

All 3 DS3s I've tried are Rev 1.0, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's the only one out right now.
First one I tried was not dual prime stable over 300 FSB.
Second one seems ok at around 350, I haven't tried higher. It also did 450 for about 30 minutes before failing.
Third one will not even post at 450, but was dual prime stable at 350 FSB for 18 hours.

Hmm...makes my board look good, I can probably do 24/7 stable at 380 if I had to guess. I was really hoping for 3.2 Ghz (400x8), but knowing that there are better DS3s out there, and my CPU and memory aren't holding it back, makes me want to return it. With my luck, I'll probably get a worse one. If I start spending a bunch on shipping it back a bunch of times then it kinda ruins the point of getting a price/performance board like the DS3.

I got E6400 + DS4 at 3,00 GHz with F2 BIOS. Is there any know issues with DS4 temp sensors? In BIOS it shows my idle CPU temp is 28 C (my room temp is 22C) and System Temperature (this is the NB temp, right?) round 32 C.
I downloaded Core Temp Beta 0.9 and it shows diffrent
Then EasyTune shows even lower on CPU... this is not possible since its lower than my room temp.. but the system temp looks like the one in BIOS.
The highest one is the real temperature? I always thought BIOS had the most correct temperature.

Try using SpeedFan. Temp 2 is the CPU temperature and it has been pretty accurate in my experience.

I think 380 isn't bad at all, but I guess my expectations are low because of the string of bad luck I've had. Just make sure it's actually stable by priming overnight. I was overjoyed at my 450 FSB overclock thinking I had finally solved the problem until it failed 30 minutes later.
Are you running MCH, FSB, and PCI voltages at stock? It doesn't seem to make a difference for me, and according to the E6400 overclock thread most people are getting 400 FSB on the DS3 with everything stock...
If you don't mind running a test for me could you try setting the CPU to default FSB and changing the multiplier so your memory runs at 800? See if it will dual prime stable for about 1-2 hours. Mine just refuses to be stable under any memory multiplier other than 2, and I have this problem on multipler boards.

Only voltage that makes a difference is +.1 MCH, +.2 and +.3 do nothing more, nothing less. I keep FSB and PCI stock since they seem to do nothing as well. I'll do the prime for the memory in a bit here then do prime overnight for the 380x8 and if all goes well I'll probably just keep everything and call it good.
EDIT: Started memory test, I can only do an hour or so (early day tomarrow).
EDIT2: 1.5 HRs 0 errors, I put everything to stock (+.3 vdimm for my OCZs), disabled throttling, etc, changed mem to 3x making it 800 and then ran the test.

So...I just put my settings back what I had for 380 and the board won't post, cleared cmos, now it beeps at me like the ram is the problem, so I changed it out with my el cheapo stick that I used to boot before and it still does the long beep at me. wtf?
I'll try the ram out in a different system tomarrow, but I think my MB just decided to :banana::banana::banana: out on me. I can't get the thing to stop doing the long beep.
EDIT: Tried the ram out in another system, works fine. I guess it's RMA time :(

I have all three connected to the Intel sata ports and have disabled the Gigabyte sata controller. What mode should I have the ports set to? Should it be set to AHCI?

DS3 6300 question.
Have combo rock solid stable at 440fsb=3080mhz
trying 450 and system boots fine, but locks within one minute on orthos/dual SP2004. Raising Vcore mch etc... doesn't help. Diff ram doesn't seem to help. Cpu seems capable of higher.
This is pretty much untweaked board/bios, just changed a few settings like ram to 533 and manually set cas/trcd/trp.tras etc... No other items disabled
if you can help me get higher I will much appreciate advice.
temps are fine btw

I hit a brick wall at 395 that I eventually figured out it was the board. Then for some reason, it just wouldn't boot with any available ram I had, so it's going back to RMA. It has some other weird problems with my raptor and floppy that I hope were specific to that one board.
I think some boards just aren't very good and hit walls before you even get close to hitting walls with other parts.

Hi guys,
I have here 2 temprature's program's. They say all three a different temprature.. Witch one i must believe ?
I think easytune 5 read it directly out of the bios. But coretemp via SMbus ?
Core Temp is the most accurate software for reading the temperature. BIOS and programs taht read the temp thru the bios are meh....
On Core Temp: The temperature readings are very accurate as the data is collected from a Digital Thermal Sensor (or DTS) which is located in each individual processing core, near the hottest part.

EDIT: Final F4 bios is warm out of the fabric : http://tw.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2314&ProductName=GA-965P-DS3
Whats the difference between that BIOS & F4E ?
Has anyone compared them, yet?

@ themeatfrog: What bios allows you to set the memory timings?
I have tired F4C, F4E and the F4 bios on Gigabytes website and all are a no go....

-noob alert- J/K!! :)
hit CTRL+F1 while at the main BIOS screen
then when you go in to the MIT section you will see the option to manually set DRAM timings.

Just to let everyone know... I just quickly put my DS3 BIOS F2 rev 1.0 together with some Team D9 (the 3-3-3-8 stuff) and a Celeron D 326 - it posted without issues.
I wish Qflash recognized my USB floppy though :( had to dig up an old internal one. Flashed to F4.
Those stock Intel coolers are pretty hard to mount... Had to apply quite a bit of force for the last pin.

Nice! I guess my RAM is my limiting factor, then: Corsair XMS2 PC6400 DDR800 5-5-5-12 :|
it is one of the "suckest" memories available on market.:fact:
I got one pair before and sold within 24hrs

ken, does the Corsair not o/c very well? I am supposed to be getting some of this, but it's backordered. What would you recomend instead of this? I would like to buy from a CAN online dealer.
Thanks

seems that you own a pair of it, so you should know the performance right?
in my opinion, no specific brand is dominating except "Micron D9"

Hey, does anyone know which SATAII chip performs better? The Intel or the Gigabyte?

Hmmm... mine had no problems with an old FSP 530W with only 18A on the single 12V rail.
Same here. Using a Fortron 400...

Is anybody using a Swiftech MCX159-CU NB cooler with this board?

The DS3 uses A OEM Jmicron SATAII controller for RAID. Intel ICH8 on the DS supports no RAID functions....

I just attached a 50mm fan to my DS3 NB with super glue. I couldn't find any hot glue or screws to fit so do you think this will be ok? It gets stupid burning my finger hot and i don't know how super glue will react to the heat. I did it anyway though. lol

I've been attaching heatsinks using super glue for many years and very few have ever come loose. It's not the best choice but it does the job in a pinch. I also super-glued a 50mm fan on my DS3's NB HS and plan to put a 40mm on the SB HS or maybe just a better HS. The fan lowered my NB temp by about 7C.

So do you guys think my RAM is definitely the limiting factor in my system (specs should be in sig)? I see some E6300's OC'ing higher than me :|

Just test your memory. Lower the multi and see how high it can go.
I have the same RAM but I haven't had the need to o/c it just yet, since I can do 400x8 with no issues and thats a 1 ghz o/c on my E6400. I'll see how high I can get it (not very high I'm guessing since some ppl are dissing it, but it fit my budget so meh) and report back. However, what's 400 FSB on an E6600, like 3.6 gig? I don't think it'd be your ram, since at 400x9 you'd be running your RAM at stock speed. Correct me if I'm wrong here though, as I'm just coming back to Intel since the days of RDRAM.

Exactly, I thought I'd be able to hit 400FSB easily but right now I'm sitting at 356x9 and it's not even dual prime stable :[
Edit: I can't even post @ 400x8!! I don't know what the deal is...

Sounds like a few possibilities:
Your board doesn't like the 9x multi.
Your board hits the FSB wall.
You have bad RAM that can't do it's rated spec.
What kinda Power Supply? Did you disable all of the things suggested on page 1? (assuming you have, but checking for clarity's sake) What voltage settings you have on RAM and Vmch? Also, the dividers are really flaky. I just stick with 1:1 since half of them crap out under any sort of adjustments.

Hello,
When TM2 is disabled in the bios, there shouldn't be throttle any more?
With my celeron, I've always throttle even if I've disabled it.
Am I alone? :D

Ok, quick question. I'm running my E6400 at 3.2ghz at 1.344 CPU vCore 1:1 with my ram. Everything runs fine and I can run SuperPi and run games and benchmarks from SiSoftSandra and Everest, but when I run SP2004 ORTHOS, it has an error in the first second. I ran Small FFTs.
I get this message...
Using CPU #1
