Hi everybody!
I'm hoping this chip which had the IHS removed. I'm pretty sure I'm going to
re-attach it, I'm a little paranoid about it :p:
My plans are to lap it before but I have a few questions:
1) What's best paste to apply on the core before re-attaching the IHS: AS5
or Ceramique?
2) Lapping: Is there a way to lap the general inside the IHS where the core
makes contact and if yes, will that help reduce temps even more?
Thanks in advance!
3) If I use a bolt down heatsink like a Big Typhoon, do I still to permanantly
re-attach the IHS or any compound that can hold it in place steadily will do?

1 - as5
2 - not really i wouldnt think you would get it flat as it would be too fiddly.
3 - You could use a tiny amount on the 4 corners to re-attach... use automotive/marine sealant - it's black.. comes in a small tube about the size of a toothpaste tube. To permanently re-attach use a line on 3 edges. Make sure you have good pressure whilst it is curing.
if you are even 1 bit unsure about usnig with ihs off then don't. Lapping will gain you very little.
Leaving it off will gain you a good bit in terms of temps but is notr adivsed if you can't readily afford another cpu. saying that if you take your time and use precautions you will be fine.

Thanks alot!
I've read about using rubber bands or little pads around the core
to help reduce any chances of crushing/damaging the core.
Is that really effective?

1) Either, AS5 is just touted as the "be all, end all" but in reality, it's not. They're all fairly equal, some perform better in some departments. My view? ASC is cheaper, and non-capacitative, so I'd use that.
2)Yes, but I wouldn't attempt it without amazing machines :p. Unless you can VISABLY see something horribly wrong with it, leave it be.
3) You can use dabs of epoxy to do this
4) You can buy shims to keep the heatsink from crushing the core, but that's more when there is no IHS.
