I tried but :( Any possible solution? I really dont want to buy a new one.
I have a 7-year-old Compaq that does stuff like that. Turn it on, or sometimes right after having rebooted it, and no monitor signal ever appears. I pull the plug out of the back and leave it sit for 10-15 minutes, then it works.
No idea if this is a PSU issue or a motherboard issue...

Half multi's don't exist on Intel.. only AMD
Don't know about your vcore problem.
I updated to 2602 yesterday, works OK except that EIST doesn't seem to work on it's own anymore. I needed to enable C1E too. 2406 worked fine with just EIST enabled..
Can you change the multi and have it stick with 2602? I'm on 2406 right now, and everytime I set a non-default multi, it doesn't stick.

hello everybody,
i got my E8500 and change to bios 2602...my board revision is 1.02 (the old one)
iīm not able to fix the multi manually at 9,5...i canīt select the half mutli...
also the vcore only works at AUTO...manually i can select 1,45 to 1,7...but it doesnīt work, if i select 1,45V...
does anybody know the problems?
thanks godsmack
I had the exact same problem with the voltages with my p5w. I didn't worry with it too much and put my e6600 back in while I waited for my new mobo to arrive so unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. I would recommend doing a long cmos clear though. This process is explained in the manual. I'd let it sit for 10 minutes or so before setting the jumper back to normal. Hopefully this will help.

I'm using EIST, why would I be changing multi? ;)
Anyway, I flashed back to 2406. EIST works as per usual so 2602 is buggy in that respect.

What Should I do to get 400*9 ??
I have ..E6600 and 2 GB Crucial pc2-1000(5-5-5-15) and hd2900pro and Epsilon 700W

800 and Enable SPD ..not working ! random reboots
800@4-4-4-12 not working !random reboots

First, back down to an 8x multi and see if your CPU and board can do 400.

I'll be flashing back too, 2602 is not stable at all for me. Even running SPD 1:1 and underclocking my memory I still get random reboots every now and then.
2406 was running fine for me 24 hour stable for weeks on end Folding- not a chance of that happening with 2602:mad:

hey guys, quick question here
i've been using bios 2004 for quite a while with no major bugs or anything, but i'm limited to 428 fsb using 1.85v for vmch.
i have the 1.04G version of the board.
what i'd like to know if the new bioses could offer me higher FSB.. i'm talking about 450+ maybe.. anyone been lucky to get that on this board?
i've recently bought a T.R.U.E. and i'm very tempted to try to get close to 3.8Ghz on my E6420, which has been done before on a P5B-Dlx.. but i'd need 475fsb for that..
thanks in advance

and can anybody around here get 450+ fsb 24/7 without mods?
i took away the metal covers from the heatsinks and there are two 92mm fans on the case door blowing on top of them...
i'd like to get some tips as to how maximize the fsb of my mobo, otherwise i'm going to get a cheap ass p35 that does much more than my p5w.

Hi guys,
I've just picked up another 2GB of RAM- 4GB total now. Bios shows all 4096mb on boot.
Now when I go into an OS it shows the following (32-bit memory limitation I'm aware of):
XP 32-bit: 2.6GB memory remap disabled
XP 32-bit: 2.0GB memory remap enabled
Ubuntu Gutsy 64-bit: 3.5GB memory remap enabled
Shouldn't the 64-bit OS show all 4.0GB of RAM? The only thing I can think of that would affect this is my crossfire config- 1024mb of RAM on each card.
Anyone know how VRAM might affect memory mapping?
Thanks

Hi Lurker, i got exactly your same config but the psu (I got an enermax liberty 500) and the videocard (i got an ati x1900xt).
I'm using xp_x64 and i can see all 4096Mb of ram.
By the way: i cannot exceed 328Mhz bus speed.. ho did you reach 333Mhz speed?????

I'm going to run a trial of Vista x64 to see if that picks up the RAM, as it shows the full amount of RAM in BIOS, I thought ubuntu 64 wouldn't have a problem with it but hopefully Vista picks it up- Can't stand the thought of unused resources :shakes:
By the way: i cannot exceed 328Mhz bus speed.. ho did you reach 333Mhz speed?????
It's been hitting 333 since I've used it, It will go as far as 346 for a benching run.
Here's my config, in case it helps:
BIOS 2602
RAM 2.1v 834Mhz 4-4-4-12
Vmch 1.85v
CPU 1.30v 9 X 333
I've basically got everything else disabled- Speedstep, Hyperpath, Asus Q-Fan.
The only other thing I could think of is to re-seat the North bridge cooler, it may be loose as those Asus clips and the stock thermal goop are crap. I reseated with AS5 the day I got the board. I remember removing the cooler and there was, what looked like a pile of chalk sitting on top of the NB chip

1.85Vmch?? It's really high! Is your system unstable if you lower the Vmch?

1.85Vmch?? It's really high! Is your system unstable if you lower the Vmch?
I have the 1.03g revision board- As far as I can remember only the 1.03g and 1.04g boards have the option for 1.85v. 1.02g and lower only have an option for 1.65v but a pencil mod can get it up to 1.85v.
If I set it to auto the system won't boot at all @ 333 X 9
1.65v - System is unstable overclocked but stable @ stock
1.85v - Rock Solid. I've also got a 40mm fan on top of the heatsink. Even after hours of gaming the NB heatsink is barely luke warm.
BIOS 2602 was unstable for me for a while after I added a second gfx card and another 2GB of RAM. I never got around to flashing back to 2504. Strangely enough after a week or two of teething problems 2602 is now stable for me.
I've been running 1.85v since September and it's never caused a problem- heat or stability wise, but I've got an insane amount of 120mm Fans in a CM stacker case. 3 on the sidedoor, 1 on the case top, 1 on the front panel, 1 on the back panel and finally 2 more on a TRU120E heatsink. Overkill? Yes- But you'll never hear me complain about temps ;)

I see. Effectively if i use 1.85Vmch the system is stable even at AUTO on Vcore! But if i touch the NB.. its really hot (i can touch it for about 5-6 seconds, then it start to hurt). Asus PC PROBE II says 40°C on MB temp. I'm a bit afraid. Under 1.85Vmch i can't go over 328Mhz.
I have a 92mm fan (silenx) on sidepanel, 120mm rear fan and 120mm front fan. The cpu cooler is the stock one.

I'd definitely stick a 40mm fan on top of the heatsink- it fits perfectly as the corner screws fit in between the heatsink fins holding it on good and tight.
What are your idle\load temps with the stock cooler at 328 x 9 ? (I'm only guessing but if your in the 60 - 70c at full load that could be your problem right there) don't know if the stock intel cooler can handle 3.0Ghz  as I've never used the stock intel cooler on this mobo.
One more thing.. Have you got a B3 stepping Q6600 or a G0? Some people with the B3 had problems reaching 3Ghz others could reach 3.2 with good cooling. I'm running the G0.

I got a G0 stepping and the temps goes up to 70°C @full load.
These are the idle temps, with eist activated, Vdimm=2.05V and all other voltages to default:

Yup, from the looks of things a 40mm fan on the NB and an aftermarket cooler should sort you out. There the only things on your setup I can see that would prevent you reaching 333 X 9. There's always a chance though it could be a board problem. I'd go for something cheap and effective if it bothers you though as it's more than likely only going to run at 333 X 9 anyway. I know it's only a few mhz but not reaching 333 would p**s me off too. It still annoys me I can't get stable at 3.2 :(

Humm, maybe you're right. I got the same mainboard of yours (1.03g) and the strange thing is that it's easy to reach 3Ghz but i get random errors during file transfers and "not exact in round" with superpi. If i use 1.85Vmch all is ok.
What about the noise of a 40mm fan on the nb?

Your gfx & psu fan would be a lot louder than a 40mm fan on the NB. You can always connect it to a motherboard fan header and set the RPM in BIOS fan control if it is too loud.
Definitely take off the heatsink and reapply some thermal paste as I can more or less guarantee that if it's still stock thermal paste it's hardened and your not getting good thermal conductivity with it.
This thread helped me a lot when setting the board up:

You can't... if you had used intel raid, you could have transferred them just by plugging them straight into the new board.
You're going to need another harddisk to backup everything and create a new array on the new board and transfer everything back.

I had 2900xt's crossfired in 2504 and a single one running in the bottom slot previous to that.
I remember seeing someone else with a similar issue crossfiring 3870's on this board. Apparently it ran fine after setting the PEG link options in BIOS to auto. I'll take it you've already tried a single card in the bottom slot?? If that's not working it's RMA time unfortunately :(

all the peg link options are already on auto, and the board won't even post with just a card in the second slot. rma time.

Hello, I'm having trouble keeping my P5W DH Deluxe with an E6300 stable. I just did a reformat, and redownloaded the chipset and audio drivers. Now, when I try to boot up with my old settings @ 2.78GHz, it will boot until I get to Windows XP, then restart itself. I've tried upping the voltages, but that didn't help. What should I change with my current settings?
Performance Mode: Auto

2504 was rock solid for me, 2602 was strange.... It was very unstable for about a week and now it's running fine- really weird. It can even run my system at 3.2 Ghz for a few hours, no other BIOS let me get anywhere near that.

So I've just re-installed my Vista x64, thought it would be a good time seeing as SP1 is out. I've had an annoying problem ever since I installed Vista in that the computer crashes when waking up from Hibernate and Sleep. It's done this on all the BIOS versions I've tried, I'm on 2602 now. All the fans come on full blast and it just sits there, roaring at me. Not ideal.
This is a completely fresh install, all drivers including my Radeon drivers are the most up-to-date ones.
Any ideas what might be casusing this? My BIOS settings have all the ACPI stuff turned to 'on'.

Are the Xeon CPUs usually interchangeable with 'regular' ones?
On slickdeals.net someone posted that the XEON QUAD CORE X3350 ($314 with coupon) is the 'same' as a Q9450, but I see no Xeons on ASUS's P5W DH compatibility guide...

Is your system overclocked? I use to get weird audio problems when pushing the voltage/processor speed a bit too much.

Your o/c seems fine I never had an audio problem with that speed/voltage. It was only when I was running 1.4v at 3.2+ trying to get stable.
Have you tried changing the audio in the BIOS between Vista / Non Vista?

http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5W%20DH%20Deluxe/P5W-DH-ASUS-Deluxe-2704.zip
Not much to say about it here, 2504 worked really weird for me, wouldn't let me over 380 on the FSB, 2602 let me up to about 445 stable, 2704 seems to be the same way.
The only changes so far:
- The minimal modifiable voltage is now 1.45v (2704) instead of 1.4v (2602)
- The POST seems to go a little bit faster now.
- The C1E and EIST functions Enable/Disable both don't show at all in the BIOS now, not even after a full CMOS clear and 1st boot.
Specs below.
P.S - I remember seeing it in this thread, but I can't find it now... how do I make one of the EZ-Backup (or wev it's called) ports into a regular SATA port?

Can't change my CPU ratio with Q6600... I've tried several bioses... 2604, 2704, 2406... and can't change my cpu ratio from 9x... it lets me change it, but upon reboot my clock speed is FSB*9, no matter what ratio i set.

btw... i can run 3.2ghz - 356x9 @ 1.375v... temps are hot though!... it's a B3...
but I'd rather run 400x8, want some higher fsb/memory speeds... wanna get my superpi under 16s. crazy part is, i run a 16.1 at this speed... if i run 375x9 = 3.38 ghz = 17.x...

Take out all the raid jumper on top of the red sata port. You can use the EZ-Backup SATA port for data drive only tho. And you can't boot from any optical device using those ports, cuz that's what Asus tech told me. And I read somewhere in their forum that when you make the ports regular, only one will work.

yes take off all jumper for easy raid then go in bios enable easy raido and on boot you have four sata ports one of the easy raid ports i ran a raido on 1 n 3 and a 80g one easy port and could boot from raido or 80g hope this helps

Does anyone know how to make the board to boot above 409Mhz FSB? My 8400 boots fine at 409Mhz FSB (3,7GHz). When I change to 410MHz the CPU is running at aprox. 500Mhz, very slow ;) I can boot at 409MHz FSB and then raise the FSB using clockgen to 445MHz without problems.

Yep, sounds like the memory is holding you back. Also, increase the MCH volts to at least 1.6v to go above 410mhz stable.
The weird thing is that on that picture you get 11.453 seconds at 455x9, whilst I get 9.[something] seconds at about 100mhz less on the CPU, so you should totally check what your memory is set to;)

Hi guys,
Just thought I'd post this up in case anyone has got Crossfire issues with Cat 8.3.
Cat 8.3 won't run crossfire on this board with 2900's (don't know about 3870's) in XP-32 bit (Confirmed by another user on Overclock.net) All sorts of issues like stuttering (5fps - 100fps back to 5fps..etc, artifacts and screen corruption in 3d apps after coming out of sleep mode. When running 3dmark the display changes when running the CPU tests resulting in a blank screen. Went from 17k to 10k in 3dmark although enabling PEG link in bios to auto brought it up to 12k for what it's worth.
Cat 8.3 with Vista 64 on the other hand is fine, So thanks ATI for dragging me kicking and screaming onto an MS 64-bit OS :D

Thank you for the response! I cannot see how you get 9sec at 4000MHz? I have checked alot of screenshots from overclocked 8400@4Ghz and they all are about 12sek?
My memory is at 1:1 divider and is Kingston HyperX PC8500, so the memory should not be an issue. I am using max volt for the MCH (1,65v) and have removed the bracket with the ASUS logo and added a 60mm fan to cool it. Temperatures are fine on the MCH.
The strange thing is that I can overclock it above 4Ghz stable with clockgen. But if I try to boot above 409MHz FSB the CPU sets to 500MHz for each core. Even a E8400 is very slow at 500MHz ;)

Memory @ 445mhz 1:1 4-4-3-5, that isn't my 24/7 FSB, but the highest I benched it at. At the 24/7 settings of 400x9, same timings and mem speed, SuperPi Mod 1.5 does 1M in a little under 13 seconds :)
Another thing though, pretty stupid to ask, but still - have you disabled EIST, C1E and HyperPath 3? And a few other things, check the first post in this thread...

I had a similar problem with VLC player while playing Dolby Digital or DTS encoded movies. I solved the problem by installing AC3 filter and Media Player Classic, so now is good.
Also, I couldn't get 44.1 kHz outpit sample rate, but some guy in Realtek tech-support sent me a modified drivers that disables Master audio features and enables 44.1, 96 and 192 output sample rate.

is anybody here having problems with sound stuttering for few seconds when pressing NOISE OFF on the remote control ?
Same thing is sometimes happening when I plug something in the front USB port, very annoying and its been like that
from the beginning (8 months or so...)
My main issue is should I try to change the board while it is under warranty or is this happening on all P5W DH boards ?!

Hi, get similar effect pressing noise off on the remote control: the pc freezes for some seconds and the sound output goes in loop during this time. In the other hand, i don't remember this during plugin or unplugin of usb devices.

Hi all!
I've had my P5W DH since its birth in mid 2006 1.02g, and I absolutely love it. Before last week, it had been running a Pentium D rock solid at 4ghz. Now I have exchanged it out for a q6700. While thinking about this upgrade, I've been following this thread, and now I have a question! So here we go:
For my q6700, would lawrywild's modified 2004 bios be my best bet for overclocking/most stable? I would like to have vcore change and no problems with speedstep. If not, I could possibly try 24something or something before the speedstep problem. I have/had bios 2602 and the auto vcore. The board would post at 3.54ghz (354*10) but wouldn't run a lick of windows without an increase of vcore, which I don't have.
My build log is at notebookreview.com (a long time poster over there). It's at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=228674

drop vmch to 1.65 and manually set the speed of your ram(not the timings, the speed). i'm using 4gb nq g.skill (a lower version of your ram) and it hits 950, no sweat. since hz has d9's on it, you should be able to hit that easily as well. my recommendations: set the fsb to 333, ram to 800, vcore to 1.375, vmch to 1.65, vmem to 2.1, and put mem timings to "by spd."
if you can't even hit 3GHz with that chip, i'll cross ship you mine(guaranteed 3.3 stable) and i'll show you what a g0 can do in my hands.

I didnt do anything special at all. Larywild's 2004 bios wouldn't even boot the QX9650 properly (the best I could do was get it to go into ezflash to flash another bios). 2302 (?) and 2406 both allowed vcore adjustments down to the lowest of 1.225v (i think). I haven't gone to a newer bios.
I don't know why people can't set below 1.40v. Has ANYONE with 2302 OR 2406 been able to NOT go under 1.40v ?
Um...I will say that I always clear the cmos immediately after the computer gets to the "cmos checksum" thing, and if it happens to NOT show that message, I enter the bios, power off, then clear cmos.

DrSlump do not use spd or auto on memory.
Do it manually!!!
Set your mem to 1:1 and manually set the timings. If you are using 4 sticks of G.Skill 6400HZ then run the timings as tight as mine. Go no looser than 4-4-4-4 or 4-3-3-4 G.Skill HZ falls right on it's face when set to loose timings.
When you use SPD you get loose timings. DO NOT use SPD with this board!!

I can vouch for this also:
Running 333x9 With 2GB of G.Skill HZ I could run 1:1 (4-4-4-4) all the way up to 834Mhz. Then 4-4-4-12 above 834Mhz and finally 1000Mhz @ 5-5-5-15.
4GB will run 4-4-4-4 as far as 834Mhz and 4-4-4-12 above that. 1000Mhz @ 5-5-5-15 is not stable for me with 4GB.
SPD is not stable for me unless I run 1:1 and it gives me weird clocks like 3-7-5-10

2) Is there any way to downgrade the BIOS to an earlier version? AFUDOS and AFUWin both keep telling me that "This board doesn't support Afu" and Asus' EZ-Flash 2 refuses to flash an older version.

You CANNOT migrate from Ez-raid to Matrix. Only way is to buy yourself another harddrive to store everything and then copy it back. If it contains the OS, then you could make a Acronis True Image HOWEVER, I seriously recommend reinstalling the OS from scratch.

However, the lowest vcore shows on the list is 1.45v ....  .. This would kill my freaking Q9450.

drop vmch to 1.65 and manually set the speed of your ram(not the timings, the speed). i'm using 4gb nq g.skill (a lower version of your ram) and it hits 950, no sweat. since hz has d9's on it, you should be able to hit that easily as well. my recommendations: set the fsb to 333, ram to 800, vcore to 1.375, vmch to 1.65, vmem to 2.1, and put mem timings to "by spd."
if you can't even hit 3GHz with that chip, i'll cross ship you mine(guaranteed 3.3 stable) and i'll show you what a g0 can do in my hands.
How do you set ram to 800 and cpu fsb to 333?
with fsb at 333 my ram is at 836mhz and requires a fsb of 317 for 800mgz ram speed.

Hi all, wondering if anyone here could try and help me out with a little problem I've been having.
The only way I can turn my computer on is if i preceed it by resetting the CMOS. Otherwise, I just get a blank screen. This has been happening for a while. My P5W-DH is from the very first generation, back when C2D just came out.
I have tried flashing the BIOS to something else (currently using 2403).
Anyone with any ideas, or suggestions, it will be much appreciated. Specs are in sig.
Cheers!

So recently i got some new ram. The 4gig ddr1000 kit from gskill. So after it comes i get a nice surprise of max 43 tRFC the mobo will give me under any setting. That puts me at drr950 with 5-5-5-15 timings max on the ram. Stress tested with orthos and its 15 hour stable. So i could deffinitly run it like this but if the ram worked right i could run the ram at ddr1005ish with same timings and not mess around with my cpu oc. Just change the divider. So my main question is should i bother doing the RMA for different ram to gain extra 25mhz? Will it even make any impact on my 3dmark06 score or games fps?

All 775 soket CPUs are supported except Core2 Extreme QX9650 and QX9770, but they also can work, some people try QX9650. Your 45nm quad requires latest 2704 bios.
Which one is the best choice between Intel core 2 Quad Q 9300 2.50 Mhz or Intel core 2 Duo E8400 w/ 3.0 Mhz??
Does it better if I pick Q 9300 w/ 2.50 MHZ but less speed or Core 2 Duo with more speed 3.0Mhz?

Customers ask me this question all day :P
In synthetic benchmarks, the Q9300 will shine, performing up to 90% faster in some. In actual gaming performance, there's still no reason
in going quad, since none of today's games have learned to utilize more than 2 cores. So far all the benchmarks show more-or-less the
same performance clock-to-clock, so a stock E8400 will perform quite a bit faster, and given that it can OC way higher than the Q9300..
you get the idea.
As soon as software starts utilizing 4 cores properly, it's quad all the way. And they'll be way cheaper and mainstream by then :P
Hope that helped.
On another note...
Thanks for the tip about reverting back to 2504, guys. The SpeedStep option reappeared in the BIOS again (C1E is still missing though).
The only problem is that when I enable SpeedStep it reverts back to "Disabled" after a restart, not to mention that it doesn't actually
do anything in the OS (the CPU speed is still at full even on idle). Anybody else encountered this with a 8400?
Thanks in advance again.

On new mainboards Q9300 overclocks only to 3.3-3.5GHz, E8400 can reach 4.2-4.4GHz. Take a mind that P5W can't work on very high FSB, so it's always nicer to get a CPU with higher multiplier, but also P5W very often overclocks even lower with Quads than with Duos.
I have to choose between Q9450/Q9550 and E8500, at last I choose cheeper E8500 and now wait for it
So first of all see that tacks you have, if they are not designed for 3-4 cores, then get Duo, it will be always faster, if your tacks have a little optimization for 3-4 cores, then extra MHz from Duo will help you not to work slower than Quad or even a bit faster.
Also Q9300 have only 3MB of L2 cache per crystal, all other E8XXX and Q9XXX have full 6MB L2 cache, which add a little more performance if your tack works only with 1 or 2 threads than compare between E8XXX and Q9300 at the same clock.

I also have a question, while I wait for my E8500. I heard that P5W mainboard have some problems with CPU voltage than it works with 45nm CPUs at overclocking? Can I set about 1.4-1.43V? I think I need such voltage to get 4-4.2GHz with my future CPU, but somebody say that I can't even set higher than nominal 1.25V?
Thank you very very much for educated me. Will keep that in mind til more software adapt with it. :worship: :worship:

You basically have 2 options for 45nm CPUs with the P5W:
1) Auto - a.k.a stock voltage, something like 1.1v to 1.225v depending on the CPU
2) 1.45v to 1.7v (ain't so healthy for a 45nm CPU)

I can vouch for this also:
Running 333x9 With 2GB of G.Skill HZ I could run 1:1 (4-4-4-4) all the way up to 834Mhz. Then 4-4-4-12 above 834Mhz and finally 1000Mhz @ 5-5-5-15.
4GB will run 4-4-4-4 as far as 834Mhz and 4-4-4-12 above that. 1000Mhz @ 5-5-5-15 is not stable for me with 4GB.
SPD is not stable for me unless I run 1:1 and it gives me weird clocks like 3-7-5-10
Hey, seems like that i'm the most unlucky guy here.. by the way: i got the system stable pushing the Vfsb to 1.20V and lowering the Vmem to 2.0V, but only for fsb=330Mhz. Anything over this value would mean instability.

Because it's very funny, ASUS implemented support for 45nm CPUs long ago, but they added only some such CPUs as supported, even first of all there was no support, later they add only E8XXX, later Q9450, later Q9300, later C1 Q9450 and Q9550, and only now they add QX9650, but it can work with the same bios as cheeper 45nm quads, no new bios for QX9650 was released.
But QX9650 was the first 45nm CPU and it was added to all 965/P35/X38 boards in last year, all other 45nm CPUs they add in time then they announced or being sold, but with our "old" 975 board they always add them after a months. Maybe Intel don't want new CPUs to work on very old boards, making people to buy some new X38?)
Even a strange situation with P5W (non-Deluxe). I see it in shop, and board box have a label "45nm CPU ready", our Deluxe have label 65nm, which say about only Conroe or even 65nm Presler Pentium D. That board have 45nm support on box, but on ASUS site there is no even support for any 1333MHz Conroe, latest bios dated to december, so maybe can be problems with latest 45nm. I wanted to buy such board, it's cheeper than my Deluxe, to my friend, because there is no only Wifi card and a Digital Home future.

Video signal problem
Hi folks,
I think my board finally died. I had the video signal problem (Monitor does not display anything after the board boots) but used to remedy that by removing the video card and unplugging the PSU. Leave it unplugged for an hour or two and it comes back.
When I boot up, the fans spin up..... and then nothing. It just sits there taunting me  . I've taken my system apart and rebuilt it. Tried all the usual fixes/tweaks- different ram in different slots different vid card, hard drives, power connectors...etc. All components were working when tested in my friends rig- GfX, CPU, RAM & PSU.
I think it's died on me. After it boots the fans spin up, the CPU and GPU's are running as you can feel the heatpipes become warm after 5 mins or so. The hard drive light also shows activity but the monitor just won't turn on (I've also tried another monitor).
I've also noticed that the usb ports and the keyboard ps/2 port won't power up, either will the bottom 2 chassis fan headers. The only rear port that seems to be working is the mouse port.
Does anyone know if the above symptoms could be a corrupted BIOS? I'd rather replace a BIOS chip than get a new mobo (though the Rampage X48 is tempting :p: ) or would I be wasting my time getting a new BIOS chip- I'm in Ireland so I'm not sure where to source one in UK/Europe?

Hi Lurker,
some time ago i experienced the same event on my pc: my X1900XT board during the start does initialize starting with the high fan speed, then lows it in another step and then sets to the lower fan speed. At the end of this procedure, the bios go on and starts the system diagnostics.
In that event the fan of the ati board was stucked at 100% speed. After some tries i understood that it was an insufficent power input to the X1900XT: the 6pin cable did not give to her enough power, maybe becouse of a loose contact.
Verify that the power cable to de graphic card is correctly connected.

Hey, i had the same problem as you, the SYSTEM Does not want to boot.
I tried everything of everything, to make sure i am specific here are guildines that i know you dont want to read full of :banana::banana::banana: story when you have problems, you just want to know the fix, like i always say, a(the) fix then tale.
1. Make sure its not the PSU, my PSU FSP600 Pavilion had died on me, he did not boot nore even BEEP when there was no VGA connected nore the 6PIN to the GTX, nore RAM, nore even CPU. So make sure its not the PSU , try disconnect the Ram or pull the 6pin from your VGA and see if its BEEP, if it BEEP you are OK.
2. Make sure its not the RAM, my ram had died on me when i tried to take it to the edge, going 1:1 333FSB and multi 889, thats like 1000 Mhz , 449 it said on memtest and the performance was very good, but i could see it was not stable. after 10 min of PRIME95 one CPU Failed on Blend test and i went to MEMTEST it showed NonStop errors with 2 test, i pull the memory stick and used 3 sticks on 900 mhz, i ran MEMTEST for 5 hr, after i turn off the computer went for the RMA in the store, got back and try to boot, the PC doesnt want to boot, i pulled the old sticks from the old set and put the new one i got from RMA and it worked, i went to RMA the 2 old ones and everything works good. the memory was running on 2.20 as CELLSHOCK Advertise, but the MHZ was too much for it.
so to be specific its not the BIOS if you DID NOT update from WINDOWS ASUS UPDATE.
Check everything i said, because the ram showed me some weak points when it was gonna die, when i had the 3 sticks when 1 died with errors, i tried to play games and Assassian Creed had some serious Freezes 3Sec Freezes and after that a Black Screen with the music continues and then total Freeze.
after the Ram was replaced everything runs smooth and good.
I hope that will Help to Everyone !
MEMORY CAN PASS MEMTEST ,PRIME95 and OCCT BUT WILL FAIL IN GAMES!
DONT EVER TRUST THOSE PROGRAM AS GUIDELINES.
CPU WOULD NEVER BE THE MAIN REASON TO CRASH IF ITS NOT OVERCLOKED, OVERVOLTAGED, DROP VOLTAGED OR HEAT PROBLEMS.
MAINBOARD WILL NOT DIE UNTIL TAKING IT OVEREDGE VOLTAGE OR FSB , THE ONLY THING THAT WILL DIE IS THE NORTHBRIDE.
I used CAPS lock to help you see and remember, What i said happend to me exacly and you cant say otherwise, for whatever reason you think, i tried them all, as for my PSU that died i bought THERMALTAKE ToughPower 850Watt.
LITTLE EDIT : (The computer Store said me the CellShock does not work good with AsusBoards, there were many returns for RMA and all boards were Asus ones, however on Gigabyte Boards the memory works pretty much good with no problems). they added it may had and have to do with the Asus V-drop which does not happen with Gigabytes boards, and thats including the very best of asus boards, Maximum Formula , Strike and such. as we all recall the eVGA 680i chip was a RAM KILLER.
Replay if you want. :yepp:

I've tried all the tweaks (RAM by spd, RAM in sync., low CPU multy, disabled hyper patch 3) but FSB wall around 367MHz. If I go up a lot with vcore, fsb wall goes up: at around 1.45Vcore about 395MHz FSB (bootable, not stable-tested).

After getting Windows reactivated, I was more inclined to play with the BIOS and got the Q9450 up to stock speed. PC-6400 caused a reboot so I'm going for PC-5300 (1:1) for now. I haven't played with the voltages so they are still set for the ones that worked with the E6300: CPU at Auto.
I am wondering if this OEM CPU was rejected elsewhere and fell into Microcenter's hand to sell as new, with small scuff-marks on the heat spreader. Running idle at stock, the temps are 51, 44, 50, 47 right now. Orthos pushes the first one to 62 or so. I thought these ran cooler...

I'm having problem with my new SATA drive. Here's the deal:
I have 2 320GB Seagate 7200.10 drives and I bought new 500GB 7200.11. First two drives are on SATA1 and SATA3, so I connected 500GB drive to SATA4. It's recognized by BIOS, but it just doesn't show up in Disk Management. I formated it / partitioned it with Acronis (on Hiren's Boot CD) and it show normally (along other two drives) in my Mac OS X installation, but it just won't show up in Windows XP.
I tried to switch drives, and then it shows normally in Win (so drive is not faulty), but then I can't see other 320GB drive (when it's connected to SATA4).
I have drives configured as Standard IDE, not AHCI in BIOS.
What could be causing this? It's quite frustrating...
Thanks

More spontaneous reboots, even after running fine all night preceded by 3 hours of Orthos and then some video conversion that used all 4 cores nicely.
Is anyone else running a 45nm Quad under the 2704 BIOS? What voltages are you using? The ones that the E6300 liked didn't work, but instead of going higher when the reboots hit I put them back to Auto with no success. The last change was to drop the RAM voltage from 2.1V to Auto, which shouldn't have been an issue last I heard.
Maybe 2704 is buggy, or maybe since this morning I was using IE7 during both reboots it or something it loaded has gone bad, but DAMN this is annoying...
Maybe it's starved for volts:

Now i was aware i'd have issues unless using Vista X64 as i currently use Vista X86, but was wondering do i absoultely have to reinstall windows to X64 to get the full 4gb ?

Have any of you have a problem with the spdif output?
I have the logitech z5500 and connected to the onboard audio via coax (digital), I have DDL enabled with the latest audio drivers (according to asus's website).
The problem? Seems like there is an initial delay when receiving the sound. It is almost like it is taking a while for the data from the audiocard to the speakers.
Anyone else experience this issue?
Please help me..I'm choking
Flash BIOS 2004 GO 45nm Edition when still have core 2 CPU 64nm. Then turn off computer c/o CPU core 2 E8400. 45nm Turn ON system Nothing on the screen ???

I'm not sure about AMI BOIS, but with Award BIOS when it's corrupted you can boot with a PCI video card (not PCI-E) and it will still boot a floppy then you can reflash. I just did that to my Tforce 965PT because after flashing in Windows it crashed at 51%.
edit, I don"t think that BIOS really supports 45nm.
I need to call 911, could not breath after read your reply. What can I do now to reflash BIOS with the bios 2506??? please help me   :slapass: :help: :help: :hitself: :hitself: :wierd: :worship: :worship:

Can you put the old CPU back in? Swapping the CPU should reset the BIOS settings for the CPU itself (since it was changed). Put the old one in, flash it to a newer BIOS that supports the E8400, then swap the chips back.

Yes, how hard is it to put the old cpu back in ?
That "G0" modded Bios doesn't support most of the 45nm cpus correctly anyway. QX9650 posts only after a cmos reset, displays the wrong speed and FSB "300 mhz" or something, and Prescott settings are available (Hyper-treading, etc). You're able to get into Ezflash quickly and reflash another BIOS, though. E8400 definitely would fare worse.
Try a flash to 2406 or 2504. If you want full use of speedstep/eist etc you will want 2406, although it's still unknown if it actually _works_ in windows or not here. Broken on newer versions.
Not Hard at all. will do then repost back. Now I can have some fresh air.
I was wrong. " it is hard"
Put back the old CPU, start by Flopy dsk, system gave me this two message
( still see old Bios 2004 GO 45mn Edition when start @ TAB )
Next the system start with Flopy...then it appeared..
1- Remove Disk or Other Media
Press any key to restart
if I restart without the flopy...it show this.....
2- Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot Media in selected boot devive and press any key
Anybody know why it happen like that? Thanks
can I reset the BIOS back to old one some how?? Thanks

Mm you flash new bios? Does it work and shows correctly Core 2 Duo E8400 at 3.00 GHz or something? Can you enter the BIOS setup program? If so, press F8 and select proper boot device or select it in setup.
I usually flash all new bioses to this mainboard and always use my USB flash drive, I start system, press Alt+F2, then system restarts with built-in flasher, it automatically scan floppy, cd and usb, then it finds file "P5WDH.ROM" on my flash drive it flashes itself and after a minute restarts.
You should rename bios file name, than copy it to flash, to name I write. By manual it cannot work with new 16gb and higher flash drives.
Latest version is 2704 now, I think try it.

Whoa...
Ok that explains it.
You need a BOOTABLE floppy disk in order to flash. It has to have an operating system on it, not just be blank with the flasher...
Make a MS DOS bootdisk and put the flashing programs on it, and away you go. Windows XP can create a bootdisk for you in the formatting options.
But since your computer *DOES* POST, when you put your old CPU back in, why not simply enter BIOS, go to Ez-flash, and flash from there (the flash files should already be on the floppy anyway)? That's what I did when the 2004 modded bios didn't work properly on my computer...

It's true for old boards, but our P5W can flash itself then only P5WDH.ROM exist on floppy, cd or usb drive. No other files or flasher required. Just press Alf-F2 at start and build-in flasher starts.
Finally, I get the junk Bios 45nm out, load back 2406, c/o the CPU E8 series, turn on system...nothing happen.
Put back the old CPU, try to strat system can not boot, and the big problem is now I don't remember what HD is for the boost. I got 5 HD total. I 'll be Death in the water.

Hi Guys,
I've got a problem with the BIOS locking up during POST. The POST goes as follows:
-Initializing USB controllers... Done.
-4096MB OK
-USB Device(s): 1 Hub, 2 Mice, 1 (something else)
-Auto Detecting Primary Master.. ATAPI CD-ROM
-Auto Detecting (something).. IDE Hard Disk
-Auto Detecting (something).. IDE Hard Disk
-Auto Detecting (something).. IDE Hard Disk
-Auto Detecting (something).. IDE Hard Disk
It usually then flashes up more details about my DVD writer (LG GSA H22N) and then freezes. This also happens if the DVD writer is unplugged, and just freezes 1 line earlier. When it actually works, it lists some S.M.A.R.T stuff about the 4 HDs, a couple of things about my USB hard-drives, then continues on its way.
In the morning, I have to power off and on the system up to 20 times until it boots; very frustrating and worrying.
Also, the overclock seems to fail about 1 in 3 times, dropping down from 3.2GHz to 2.39GHz (E6600).
I've also tried removing / adding USB storage, remove all USB except keyboard / mouse, disconnecting DVD drive. Nothing seems to help it.
Are these symtpoms similar to anything anybody has previously experienced? I'm thinking about clearing CMOS and re-doing my settings, but I'm avoiding this as it seemed to be set up nicely.
I am using latest BIOS (2704 iirc).
Many thanks,
Yolanda

Clear CMOS first, set memory to SPD and even to slowest mode (533MHz) at first, disable most of built-in adapters, leave only bootable HDD.
First of all try to make your system rock stable without overclocking, however it seems that overclocking fail not because your CPU can't work at 3.2GHz, but because you restart system several times and mainboard thinks that your CPU can't work at such clock and lowers it, P5W always lowers clock of all Core2 6XXX to 1066FSB.

Anybody see such strange thing, called "Config Disk"?
Very seldom, but sometimes then XP starts, it founds new hard drive or simply drive, which wasn't installed into the system, but called "Config disk" XP can't assign any drive letter to it, system can't format or make other manage with this disk, but it remains in disk wizard and in system configuration wizard until reboot, after reboot disk disappear.
It happens very very seldon on XP or Vista, but did you see it ever?
Recently I installed Mac OS x86 Leopard released by TOH version 10.5 and every time I start this hand made Mac on my P5W, a see a strange message: "340KB Config disk" and errors about it. System also can't format this disk.
Anybody know what is it?
I think, it's true or not, I don't know: P5W has a built-in RAID on Silicon Image controller, which is unique because can work without drivers and can be configured by board switches physically, also this chipset can't be seen by programs, haven't listed as PCI device and can't work with it's drivers.
I think may be this strange disk is something like driver inside BIOS or inside this controller ROM.

Well, that was easy enough. I took apart the parts and found a smell in the power supply; I purchased a new Corsair 650w and installed it tonight; problem solved, methinks.
The P5W DH is still ticking. . . . :yepp:

Anyhow, my problem is that when i try to flash the bios, it allways halts at the "verify" part.

Any tips? Suggestions?

I'm not a computer pro so excuse me if I have posted a little too much info!
First here are my specs...
Core2Duo E6600 (B2) + AC FP7 @ 3.2GHz (400x8) (good temps.)
Asus P5W DH Deluxe (BIOS 2004)
2GB GeIL DDRII 6400
BFG 8800 GTS OC 512
X-Fi 7.1 Xtreme Music
2 x Samsung 500GB SATA
1 x Seagate 120 GB SATA
Hiper Type-R 580W Modular PSU
Now my questions....!
1. The computer hangs on the ASUS screen for ages, around 50seconds before it get to the XP boot screen... Is there any way to speed this up?
2. Whenever I leave a USB drive plugged in it wont boot, is there a way around this?
3. Every now and then the motherboard randomly beeps (just one beep)!
4. I have 2 500gb HDD's I'm want to Stripe, they will have the OS on them, which ports on the board do I use and where do I plug my additional 120gb drive?
5. Are my OC settings below correct? Which is the most suitable BIOS realease for my system?
Love this motherboard (shame it's not SLi)
Thanks guys :)

I am now using 2704 bios was using 2004.
The only change I have noticed is now hd idle shutdown now works properly on every drive it must have been buggy in 2004. system is stable and C1E and speedstep both appear to work properly unlike in 2504 which was buggy and also unstable on my system.
so 2704 -> 2504 on a 6420 cpu.
so far seems to also be -> 2004.
I have my ram at 4-4-4-10 1:1 (cpu at 333fsb) its possible to run at 4-4-4-4? which some people seem to be doing.

Hi All,
Another first time poster here. Been a member at OCN for a bit now, but no P5W thread there, lol.
I have this board paired up an X3220 Quad Core, an 8800GTS 320MB, and am currently waffling between 3 sets of RAM I have, but I can figure that one out.
What I am wondering, is the age old question: Is now the time to upgrade?
With the P35, already eclipsed by the X38/X48 (which are most drool worthy I might add), is my beloved P5W really becoming a dinosaur?
I never really even considered it until I recently read an article in which the 975X chipset was referred to as "aging" and "esoteric".
I've had this board going on a year and a half now (actually I am on #2, as #1 had a capacitor issue) and really like it, but I see the X38 pushing the quads upward of 4.0GHz, makes me wonder if I should splurge on a Rampage Formula or something snazzy like that.
I would love any opinions on the "current relevance" (for lack of better terminology) of the 975X, and more specifically, the P5W DH Deluxe.
In other news, I recently upgraded to BIOS 2704, and hate it. My system feels strange to me, and is a little buggy. Will be trying to flash backward to something more solid.

Hey Lurker,
Thanks for the tip on the BIOS. I tried EZ-Flash, but it didn't want to downgrade the BIOS for me. Took a look at the manual, and a few sites and found out I need to launch Afudos 2.17 or older from DOS, and then run the "afudos /iP5WDH.rom" command. I don't have a floppy drive, so I used Nero 7 to create a bootable DOS CD, and burned both Afudos, and BIOS 2504 (renamed "P5WDH.rom) onto the CD. When I rebooted, Caldera DOS launched, but both the command above, and simply "afudos.exe" fail to launch. Do you know where I could find a decent step by step for downgrading the BIOS on this board w/o a floppy drive?
As far as the possible upgrade to a Rampage Formula goes, I think I'll need to do a lot more research before pulling the trigger on another high end board. I had some great OC success last evening that I think will keep the P5W my buddy for a while to come yet - I've had a few different sets of RAM on hand lately that I have been fooling with. I finally settled on a 2GB kit of Corsair XMS2. The P5W makes love to this stuff! I can run it at over 1000MHz at 5-5-5-15 2T timings while OC'd to 3.0GHz. Also - you mentioned 3.4GHz being a good # to hit. Last night, I clocked it at 3.4GHz, RAM @ 945MHz 5-5-5-15 2T timings (Prime stable approx. 6 hours - no errors.) This is a whole new level of OC'ing on this board for me. I attribute it all to the RAM I am now using, as that was really the only variable.
I had previously used a 4x1GB kit of OCZ Platinum XTC DDR2-800, and a 2x1GB kit of Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800. Neither ran above the stock 800, even though the tracers were EPP rated for 1000MHz @ 2.2v. Also, I couldn't even get stable at 3.2. 3.4 was a pipe-dream.
I still want to downgrade to the 2504 BIOS though, even with the above OC results thus far. This 2704 BIOS seems slow (the actual BIOS interface) and I am unable to change my CPU multi downward anymore.

1. Disable AI Quiet in Power>Hardware Monitor
2. Make sure the 1st boot device is set to your windows hard disk
3. ??? when does it beep? during post or while in windows?
4. ??? u mean two more sata disk beside your 2x 500gb samsung?
5. looks good to me... 400fsb
1. AI Quiet is disabled, still hangs for what seems a long time, sometimes it also go goes back to the ASUS boot screen after displaying the JMicron details, weird!
2. Done!
3. It beeps in windows, randomly a few times a week
4. I want to RAID0 my current and only 2 Samsung drives (with OS on), where do I plug them in and which drivers do I use? I'm getting confused over the ICH7R and JMicron
5. Can I squeeze any more out of the processor? Would you recommend updating my BIOS from 2004?

I got one quiet week out of the Q9450. No reboots, no issues.
Then Saturday it rebooted a few times, and even doing a Restart from Windows was an adventure when it either refuses to POST or took a while to get around to the USB/hard drive part.
So I went in and reset the CMOS, then set everything as Auto, and it still had issues. One less issue: Auto now means 2.66Ghhz, except for the frequent times it refuses to boot and I use F2 to get it going, then I'm at 2.134Ghz @ 1066Mhz FSB.
Is 2704 really this buggy, or is there a track record of Q9450s not working?...

Go with the Corsair... see my above post. I have used many brands of RAM on this board. Started out w/ G.Skill, then OCZ, then Crucial, Kingston, and (finally) Corsair. Since I installed the Corsair modules (see sig), everything runs better. My OC is higher and more stable than ever, and I can still keep the timings tight if I want to. I have it at 5-5-5-15-2T now, as I am OC'd to 3.4GHz w/ my quad, but it will run @ or near 800MHZ @ 4-4-4-12.
Bottom line: Corsair + P5W DH Deluxe = Happy Camper :)

So does anyone know of a way to downgrade the bios w/o a floppy drive?
Or even just a link to some info on it?
I don't know - it's wierd. I am perfectly satisfied by the OC performance of 2704, and with the rig while it's running in windows, but the BIOS interface is overly sluggish, and if I change my multi downward, it won't stick, meaning when I hit F10, and restart, it goes back to 9 every time.
(had been shooting for 8x400 as an "all the time" OC, although I have never hit 400fsb with a quad on this board anyway, so doubtful it would have worked)

Hi
Well my second Samsung 500gb drive arrived today...
I have decided not to use the EZ RAID ports as I heard they are slower...
And I dont think I'm using the JMicron drivers...
My drives show up on the Intel Matrix boot screen and the array (raid0) displays fine...
I have no floppy disk drive so I slipstreamed what I though was the correct driver onto an XP SP2 cd using nLite...
When I boot to install XP (32) onto the array no hdd appears in the installation...
Can someone please point me in direction of the correct driver to use with nLite and quick guide to make sure I'm doing it right....

Thanks for the compliment on my rig! It's gaming performance isn't what it used to be, since I stupidly upgrade to a 24" Dell Ultrasharp without considering that my "lowly" 320MB 8800GTS would not be quite enough to max things out anymore.
I am sort of playing it safe for a few weeks, trying to decide if I should go back to AMD and get a 3870 x2, or drop some serious cash on a 9800GX2.
(I am leaning toward Nvidia, as ATI driver for Linux are crap, but it's a tough choice due to the TCO - $$$)

Lots of us are somewhat, or even overly, "brand loyal". G.Skill makes some really good memory, and some so-so memory.
However there are very few people I know of that would choose G.Skill over Corsair XMS if $$ is not the issue.
G.Skill works great (usually) but you get what you pay for. Anytime I have been able to push G.Skill modules over spec, I feel lucky. When I get Corsair modules to do it, I feel like I got what I was expecting.
Corsair > G.Skill anyday, but would never knock a guy for using G.Skill, I guess it's just a personal preference.

So when I only got an extra 10Mhz out of those Corsair XMS sticks I bought, was that just hard luck or was that all I should have been expecting?...
Look, I am not trying to start an argument here on this... Corsair XMS generally OC's like a beast.
If you know the P5W DH very well, then you are aware of the issues it has when OCing with 4 dimms.
Slap those puppies in a modern chipset and you may see different results.
G.Skill is a great company, but they DO NOT have the reputation of Corsair. That is basically what I was getting at in my earlier post. G.Skill OC's pretty well, but I feel like I took a chance on a company that was still an "off-brand" as of '06 and it paid off. If I OC Corsair, I feel like I got what I paid for - Corsair's long reputation of high quality.
It's hardly fanboyizm. G.Skill (stateside) are still new kids on the block. They are cheap, and they OC well, so they are usually a good buy for the budget overclocker. If there is no budget constraint, then most folks will go with a more well known brand name, such as Corsair, OCZ, or Crucial. How many legitimately "High End" rigs do you see running G.Skill??? It's something like wearing an Armani suit with a tie you bought at Wal-Mart. The tie may be nice, but it's out of place, and detracts from the look.
- If you are having issues OC'ing 4GB of ram on this board, you should look at a 2x2GB configuration, or even try running 2x1GB and see if your results change. Could be a variety of things inhibiting your OC, but I doubt it's the Corsair modules that are well known for OC'ing beyond spec.
Also, I just noticed you're running a CPU that has just very recently become supported on this board. A board, mind you, that was built for Pentium 4's and D's, with Conroe in mind - not built for Conroe with Yorfield in mind. That would be a P35. A P35/X38/X48 should not have an issue supporting the OC you are looking for. The 975X seems to be your limiting factor, not the RAM, or the CPU. - Remember that this board was not designed for these new 45nm CPU's, support for them is being added as an afterthought. 65nm supported out of the box, and even 1333 support "When CPU's supporting 1333fsb are available", didn't see anything about 45nm quad-cores on the packaging.
Good luck with your OC, but I wouldn't expect miracles from this board if you keep using the Q9450, even the Q6600 is a tough egg to crack on this board.

No argument intended. And that 410 was with E6300 and 2GB where 411 failed Orthos.
4GB's issue was abandoning 1:1 for whatever still booted. I even had to pull RAM out to get it to POST properly if 1:1 was used with 4GB inside.
I just wondered if 800Mhz XMS was intended to go higher but some batches were bad, or if getting 10Mhz out of it was lucky...

Sorry if I misunderstood, It's been a long day already, and I'll be leaving the office no time soon, lol.
Depends on what kind you get... I have had awesome success with my most recent kit (800MHz 4-4-4-12) They run just fine at 1000MHz 5-5-5-15, which is a pretty monster OC.
The non-SLI variety, I think they're rated for 5-5-5-12 ( I may be wrong) do not OC as well.
You should definitely be able to get more out of the 4-4-4-12 version. I am really suprised at the 10MHz increase. I am thinking it is related to something else. (poor BIOS support for the processor, etc.) Do you have another system you can test them in?

I had the same problem
2 x 1Gb Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 v5.1 or v5.2. had VERY CRAPPY Promos ICs.
They did 800mhz 4-4-4-12 1.8v and wouldn't do 850mhz 5-5-5-18 2.2v stable.
So glad i got rid of those.
Only after i had that problem, i decided to look on those modules and found out it was common knowledge they're very poor overclockers :(

Can't win them all. I did a lot of research when I bought my most recent kit, so much so that I was torn between Corsair and Crucial.
I bought both
After benching them, I found the Corsair OC'd a bit better, so I am now selling the Crucial on craigslist, LOL.
Still, 800MHz @ 4-4-4-12 is great, if you do not plan to exceed a 400MHz FSB (1600MHz QDR)
In fact, I bet if you underclocked them a touch, you could actually tighten the timings a little more.
You will see little/ no performance difference with them underclocked at tighter timings (like 3-3-3-8, if you can pull it off with those sticks)
- I have been burned a few times in the past, even by well known name brands. While OC'ing is never (or rarely) a guarantee, it sucks when you buy an item thinking it will help you get to that next level, and then it turns out to be dog turds.
P.S. - NICE mobo... I was eyeballing the DS3's for a build I am working on for my girlfriend. They're colorful, that's why she likes 'em.
I like 'em because they use all solid caps, and OC like a Banshee!

Sorry can I just butt in here please and ask a stupid question about memory timings and stuff?
It's just CPU-Z never reports that my RAM is running faster than 333.5mhz :( and I'd like to get it running faster obviously.
I have 4 gigs of GEIL DDR2-800 RAM and it says the voltage should be set to 2.1v and the timings 4-4-4-12.
I am a total noob to all this, when I switch off 'configure RAM by SPD' in the BIOS there are five settings there, so I'm not sure what to do with the other one once I've put in my four 4-4-4-12 numbers!
Stupid question, but can anyone tell me how to make my RAM work at closer to the speed it's specced at?

Nope. And again, 10Mhz was established a long time back now. I just ran with what worked best, then when adding the extra 2GB forced me back from 1:1 I just sucked it up and hoped the extra RAM helped.
Now with the Q9450, currently underclocked to 2Ghz to keep it from crashing, I see I need all the help I can get. WinAVI uses 4 cores when converting MPEG-2 to WMV, apparently ONLY if all 4 are really empty when it starts. Kaspersky's rootkit scan had already started on its daily schedule, and I saw that WInAVI was barely hitting 9 frames per second. So thinking it'd pick up the pace if I killed the scan, I did that and now see one lousy core doing all the work with a vague rumble on the other 3. No sign that WinAVI is capable of looking at the current status of the machine and rethreading if the coast is clear.
So it looks like I have to check the Process list every time I want to do something intense, and if the coast is clear I can kick off a Power Application like WinAVI. Otherwise I end up waiting longer than I ever expected after $300 and (still ongoing) work getting my 4 cores. Nearly 30 frames per second during the few days 2.66Ghz ran right.
ASUS Tech Support wrote back, saying they don't know when a better BIOS for a Q9450 is due. Seems like they could have gotten word from the developers, if they all worked for the same company and the company actually cared. Must not work that way.
At least now I cut the rootkit scan back to every 4 days to balance paranoia against hardware flaws...

I always disable any full screen logo on POST with whatever mobo I am using. This might help for you also. Also, if you are not using the lowest IDE channel (under the PCI slots) than you will want to disable the JMicron controller. I never used that port and never enabled JMicron and everything worked fine. Faster boot as well since it doesn't need to look for JMicron.
That beeping in WIndows is strange, I have no idea what might cause that.
The lowest two SATA ports...the orange ones...are attached to the Asus EZ RAID. Put your two HDDs on them and there is a jumper somewhere near those ports. This jumper comes default from factory set to RAID1. You will have to move it over to the other pin for RAID0. This EZ RAID has worked flawlessly for me in RAID 0 for more than a year and is so simple it needs no drivers. Your manual covers this in much better detail with pics and everything. If you don't have the manual it can be downloaded in PDF format from Asus website.
You should know once you RAID the drives ALL data will be lost.
Ummm...400X8 was the best I was able to get stable from my E6600 on this mobo. I doubt you will be able to get much more, but I wish you luck if you try. :)

Can i run 8 gigs of corsair ram at 4-4-4-12 at 8x400 or will i have problems?
On the P5W? - Should be able to... When I ran an E6400, I ran it @ 8x400 w/4GB of OCZ memory.
If your memory is spec'ed for 4-4-4-12 @ a certain voltage, just make sure you are supplying the volts it needs.
The SPD thing on this board doesn't always work right, and sometimes produces looser timings than one would desire, however you can manually set those.
There is a trade off though - for some people (myself included) I cannot get to 400fsb with manual timings. (w/4GB) I HAVE to auto set them with SPD. Your mileage may vary. If you are running a huge OC, but your timings a re a little looser than you'd like, for instance 4-5-4-15 or something from SPD, just leave it, the difference is not noticeable by mortal men.

I guess I could replace my DH Deluxe if there was still a board that had two IDE ports that handled a Q9450 well. It's just that I expected to be able to use this one until I bailed for a Nehalem setup in a couple of years.
I have a PCI IDE card lying around somewhere but that isn't my idea of the way to use a slot in a NEW motherboard...
Please help me
Reflash to 2406, start system is fine. Then replace CPU E8400...turn on the rid power on fan on water system on but the first post post screen from my compter never on nothing on the screen. What did I do wrong Please help me.
Also none of my USB onboard are working at all after update to 2406...What went wrong? Please help.
Also none of my USE onboard work at all ...what wrong ???
Put back the old CPU everything goes back to normal.
would this MB work for E8400 or do I need to reflash the CPU with higher Bios or need to update the Chips set??? So many questions. Thanks

Hi guys, i've two questions for you:
1) I've an fsb wall of a mere 328Mhz for my Q6600 G0, on a bios version 2704. Could a different bios help resolving my issue? Or is the fsb wall an unsolvable problem?
2)Is there a bios that works best with the Q6600 G0?
Thanks.

what revision is your board? you can find the revision number next to the ram slot that's closest to the lga socket.

1.03.. why?
1.03 should have no problem. i've owned both 1.02 and 1.03 and the 1.03 was better at clocking.

Well i'm having problem with the Q6600 only. The E6600 i had before the upgrade worked with no problems @360-400fsb, with all voltages@default.
Now past the 328Mhz, i can change any setting or any voltage i wish, without (or little gain) in stability.
333Mhz seems to be impossible to reach without loosing stability, very very strange.

I have about the same here only a little better. 340 is max, 350 works also but then the network starts making errors (crc errors in large rars opened over the network, which work fine with a little lower fsb, when copied over with a lower fsb, they work fine on the machine with a high fsb when unpacking, when copied over with high fsb they fail even at lower fsb, so it is definitely the network which crappes out, but until opening rars you would never know:down: ).
I donīt think anyone has found a way for really high fsb with a Q6600 G0 on this mobo.

I just reflash the Bios to 260x.
Do I need to remove the jumper on the MB or take the battery out on the MB to reset the MB before install the E8400 . Many thanks.

Yes! The same errors i have: crc errors. So it's the mainboard, not the cpu. I'm really disappointed, because it means a really bad design in the voltage control unit and/or the pcb.

What is the max FSB for the PW5 with a newer chip like a E8500/8400 ??
Thinking about upgrading my e6700
I just reflash the Bios to 260x.
Do I need to remove the jumper on the MB or take the battery out on the MB to reset the MB before install the E8400 . Many thanks.

I think it's indifferent. Put in the cpu, don't worry.
It is painful to upgrade from my old Cpu to E8400... have to reset RTCram remove Battery. I have to remove my waterline..etc.. to reach to RTC. and also have to reinstall Windows XP to new HD ( reboot to windows screen then stop ). It is painful very very painful.
Anyway, I don't know or it's only me or it happen to anybody else.
So here is the steps to upgrade old CPU to E8400
1- DL Bios 260x ( anything below that # won't work) ( still use same system)
2- Change file name to xxxx.ROM, then burn to Floppy, use EZ Flash
3- insert Floppy and flash it
4- Chk at post bios see 260x is it there or not ? if YES remove old CPU. If not redo flash Bios
5- Remove old CPU, reset RTC RAM, Remove Battery on MB ( if you skip one of those steps..it won't work) Someone on this forum gave me wrong/ missing step to do remove it..that is why it is take so long to make my rid work again. But thank you to those guys anyway. :slapass: :wierd:
6- if your Windows OS hung during boots up....go buy or take your extra HD to reload Win OS again.
That is all folks. enjoy

You don't nor ever have had to remove the battery. All that is required when clearing CMOS is to cut the power completely by unplugging or turning off the power supply.
At least....you SHOULDN'T have to remove the battery.......
You are back. Don't or do as you said.....( kind of little late )  it is already done. Thank you anyway, Falkentyne! I wisk you would reply little bit early so I can have more time for my fishing stuff. How about the BIOS stuff???

Sorry I don't know about any other bios settings. I'm using 2406 and afraid to go newer because of stories of people unable to set voltages lower than 1.45v. And I still don't know if 2704 is an improvement; I saw *ONE*....count em...ONE post supporting 2704, and several bashing it as badly as 2602....
I also asked a question several pages ago which was totally ignored:
Is ANYONE using 2704 with a 45nm CPU having the FULL voltage range available (1.225v-1.7) and NOT just 1.45 and up?
Is ANYONE using 2704 and HAPPY with it, similar to the last version which seemed to work correctly, 2406?
Is ANYONE using 2704 and have SPEEDSTEP/EIST/C1E working, WITHOUT needing to enable the CPU multiplier feature?
Oh Well, that is life. But You are still the MAn. Thanks, Bud.

on both of my p5wdh boards you need to remove the battery AND do the jumper, no matter how long the computer is unplugged. it even says to do both in the manual.
