Yes, of course. I could just force a flash using the DOS utility.
Who else can't set Vcore?

Your GTX blow hot air directly to mobo temperature sensor which is situated just below GTX fan. So the sensor is hot, not entire mobo. This is the same situation with my XFX GTS 320. My mobo temp is some 45 °C on idle.
Ok, I hope you have right...

Temp inside has nothing to do with mobo ....
Oh my bad, the motherboard is in its own little space with its own air supply then... Yeah. Jeeze, go learn some (seriously) basic physics..

OK, well I can sometimes - but when I set the Vcore and save the changes and return there again, its back on "auto" with no options available. Hilarious.
The 2205 bios seems to like to disable the onboard sound too.

Just looking for some advice. Is there any consensus on which is the 'best' bios for a B3 q6600 1066 quad core? Its currently on 1305, has been for ages and rock solid at 400, I'm reluctant to change it as it works so well.
According to Asus support the G0 step is only supported in 2205.

07-20-2007, 08:49 AM
Seeing how Asus states that the Commando needs BIOS 1404 for G0 support and how another guy who didn't know that, installed and ran a E6750 just fine on his age old 0803 BIOS dating from Jan 07 - I would just go ahead and try out the G0 chip on the old BIOS 1st and see if it runs OK.
With all the bad feedback of 2205, update as needed else leave it alone.

A long shoot, but it seemed to work for me:
Important:
This must be done ON THE VERY FIRST BOOT AFTER FLASH
-Disable Enhanced C1 Control
-Disable CPU Internal Thermal Control
-Choose a Vcore (other than 'auto').
-Hit save and reboot.

I officially hate asus. Support sucks big time. I've sent in the mobo 4 weeks ago, and the replacement arrives today, and it's one rev. down. They can't do anything because the stupid b!tch on the phone claims that they have received rev1.02 when I've sent in rev1.04 (got 1.03 as a replacement). The document I've received with the replacement states that both mobos are 1.04g. What bunch of lying assh0les. I will never buy another asus, ever. At least, when I sent in my old abit mobo, they had the decency to replace with the same gen mobo and not some old junk. Asus, burn in hell and die.

Anzial - nice to hear from you again. You haven't had a lot of luck with your P5W - I thought you have binned it ages ago -lol !. I liked mine but it didn't like the 2x2GB gskill PQs I bought to run vista X64 so I bought dare I say it an Asus P5K deluxe. I have found it very flexible running with FSB settings way above 450 and the BIOS has the memory settings we all want in the P5W BIOS - so to make the most of it I ebayed the RAM for 4x1Gb Ballistix 8500C5 and am waiting for an E6850 to play with. I have high hopes to go up and beyond with this setup. The P5K Deluxe is a nice board with the usual few Asus badly placed slots etc but it really performs like no other I have used.

Hey Everybody, I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I'm about 1/8th of the way through it (man it's huge) and just wanted to thank everyone for the vast amount of information.
So far I have been testing the board a lot. I knocked the Multi down to 6X and the Ram is only running at 750 (rated and tested for 800 successfully). I have gotten stable at about 350 FSB on my E6400, but 355 is always unsuccessful within 5 minutes. I have tried everything to get it stable at higher FSB frequency, but am stuck. I hope the answer is present in the last 7/8ths of this thread, but I figured I'd post and see if anyone had any ideas.
Oh, and I have tried the suggestions available in the first post (HP3, SPD, etc).
Bios: 2004
Ram: GeIL 6400 Ultra
Rev: 1.02G
Thanks for the 200+ pages of information :D

I bought a NEC AD-7170s a few month back cos I didn't want to use the IDE connections any more especially the Jmicron one. It runs very nicely connected to one of the Ich7 sata ports. Why do you ask?

What port did you use for it?
I have NEC AD-7173S.
Bios says on boot:
Master Drive: ATAPI Incompatible.
Drives are recognised like this:
1- master 320GB S-ATA Western Digital
2- slave 320GB S-ATA Western Digital
3- master: not found (not instaled)
4- slave NEC AD-7173S
NEC is found as master if I put it in S-ATA port 1.
Nothing works on that weirdly placed S-ATA connector near CPU.
I tried AHCI and IDE settings in bios and no matter what select, every time in post/boot I have to hit F1 to resume boot.
sesdave

Connect boot drive to RED sata port1- next drive to black sata port 3 beside RED port and DVD to second black sata port 4 below the first one. Disable Jmicron in BIOS if you arent using it. Set Sata to IDE in BIOS. U need to reinstall windows and drivers if u want to use AHCI mode.
BulldogPO
07-22-2007, 03:36 PM
That is jus like I did, boot drive is at red and second drive is at black and DVD rive is below that.
And bios says something about master drive missing...
DVD drive is recognised as master only if I put it in that red conector.

Check you boot drive priority and sequence settings under boot in BIOS.Sound like its picking up the wrong SATA hard drive for boot.

It still boots Vista, it only says about that non present master drive and I have to press F1.
But Vista´s device manager has exlamation mark on that NEC and it does not work.

an update, the xifi is moved and I also tried moving my pata drive from jmicron to the ICH7.
Result is sound is clearer so the sound card move is beneficial but videos stil stutter very badly, I am backing up some stuff now and will hopefully be running XP on normal IDE mode within 24 hours.

I have the same problem after installing a IDE drive without that little plastic bit which indicates whether or not its set as slave or master...

The RED S-ata port 1 is for the S-ata boot HD only. The stated coinfiguration works fine on my MB rev1.04g with either BIOS 1707 or 2103.. I have a dual boot setup with Winxp pro and Vista x64 and the DVD works no problems. You are not running RAID and have SATA set to IDE in BIOS ?.
Have you checked the DVD out in another machine to check it is okay? Might be the cable - I suggest try with only boot drive and the DVD using the second hard drive cable as you know that works. .Unlikely but I would also try reflashing the BIOS if that doesn't work in case it is corrupt.

Hi!
I have a thing thats been bugging me. I have a lot of HDDs and would like to use them without any RAID. So I'd like to use all the ports available :)
The problem is with those orange ports (ez-raid).
Only on port1 works for me. I'm thinking it has something to do with that EZ-Raid thing :/
I'd just like to have a confirmation if it is possible to have two HDD connected without RAID.
Maybe I just missed some option in BIOS/jumpers.

C2D Virtualization technology allows modeling the work of several virtual platforms on a single hardware system. As a rule u disabale this in the BIOS unless u are using it. Check first page of this thread.
I dont have a quad but see plenty of posts in this thread from people who are happily running them o/c on P5W . Do a search on this thread would be my suggestion.

You forgot the BIOS settings. We have a similar problem in that both of us are stuck between 360 or in that area. I can get to that, but it isn't stable.
Right now I can not even overclock more than 2,2GHz as this 2205 BIOS does not save vcore values and even disables the option whenever the chance arises. I am starting to become very tired of this now...but the board in general is really a good board.

After reading this post (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1683920&postcount=612), I begin to wonder if our problems lie in the cooling on the north bridge. Maybe we're creating too much heat on it and it's throttling some how.
Just a thought, but as for the Bios Settings... I'm too lazy to type everything in, but here are some pics. I just made an album for them (http://s91.photobucket.com/albums/k315/ae804/Bios%20Settigns/) as it seems to be easier, and I don't take up space in this thread :D

have you done the MB cooling mod foir the NB/SB?
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=106563
if not it is worth doing plus get a 40mm fan and stick it on the NB - it helps a lot. Also - here is a link to a useful O/C guide http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/Core2Duo-Overclocking-Guide-v1-ftopict197995.html
From the pics you have posted I would disable all Q fan control also memory remap unless you have 4GB. Set FSB - 1.3 or 1.4v ,MCH = 1.65 and maybe up the memory volts - I dont know what they are speced for. I couldn't see the vcore setting but follow the guide recommendation and see how you get on. Your PSU might be a bit light for this board - nearer 600w or above is what is recommended

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I'm thinking I can get a small fan from work, and probably use that. I also have a couple chipset coolers (TT Spirit II's). If i get some time, I'll try that.
as for the PSU... I wish I could figure out a way to test if it's the PSU with out buying a new one. I don't want to spend $150 just to realize it's something else, any suggestions? Maybe unplug all but 1 of the hdd's and one of my Optical drives??? Would that give me enough leeway to work some magic?

Lawrywild installed the spirit !! on the NB - search for his post re clip connection and removing existing heatpipe. To remove existing NB,mofset and Southbridge heatsinks use a click type pen barrel rather than long nose plier to compress the heatsink pins. It fits just right to compress the pins enough to allow withdrawl without any damage. Someone else posted that when you have removed NB and Mofset you can heat it up and it will just seperate else just cut it near the mofset. I wouldnt bother replacing the SB with a spirit 11 - it doesnt get that hot and the spirit !! would propbably get in the way of Graphic cards e.g 8800's. I found I had to offset the 40mm fan on it to allow the card install. I am not saying your PSU is a problem just that a good clean and accurate delivery of required voltage is important when overclocking. I thought you stated a 480w PSU in a previous post but I see you have a 600w gamestream - that will be fine.

good to know. My south bridge hasn't really been showing any temp problems. It's been pretty constant around 35-40'C.
Another question, Do I have to do anything to cool the msofets if I change the NB?

You can just cut the pipe and leave the stock mofset in place but the Thermalright HR-09 Mofset cooler http://www.frostytech.com/permalink.cfm?NewsID=57924 looks good to go if you want to replace the stock one . Here is the board compatability list http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/HR-09-MCL.htm#Q12. I would probably have done what you are going to do but I have a new toy in the form of an Asus P5K to run with an E6850 an 4x1GB ballistix 8500c5 . I have high hopes!

Gents,
I have the following components:
Antec P180 w/Swiftech H20-120 CPU Cooling
Antec 650w Tri Rail PSU
Intel Q6600
Asus P5WDH Deluxe
4x1GB Crucial Ballistic PC-800 BL2KIT12864AA804
ATI HD 2900XT 1GB DDR4
WD Raptor 150GB 16MB Cache
My question is this,
My system is so new I am thinking of returning my Mobo for an ASUS P5K DELUXE/WIFI-AP P35. I know this may sound silly but I love the DH for the remote. I can shut down/hibernate the pc without having to open my case etc... I can OC my Q6600 to 3.4 Ghz 375 FSB and my memory is 756.8Mhz 1:1 according to CPUZ. I am really happy but I cannot seem to get to that 3.6Ghz 800Mhz 1:1 400FSB even if i use the 8x to drop it to 3.2 ghz 400 FSB is just not stable at all... I am just wondering if it is worth it to get the P35.. It is not that much money maybe $25 more. But will my current DH remote work with it? Any advise would be aprreciated.
Oh on another not I flashed my bios using the Asus Windows Update program. And you all know what happened. Well it erased my eprom and I was stuck with an inoperable board. I just made the switch from AMD and have always used Asus boards and I have never ever had this problem with a flash failing and erasing an eprom. Well another Motherboard later and a hotflash using AFUDOS and all is well. I wish I found this thread before I made that error.
Again any advise would be aprreciated. I have not had an Intel since my 3.05Ghz 478 533Mhz HT proc. It is all new to me again with OCing this. Should I expect more in Ocing a Q6600? Can I acheive 4Ghz stable? And finally will my little remote work with this P35 board.
Thank you in advance.

Dont know about the remote - I never used it on the P5W but I have just swapped my P5W for a P5K deluxe as I couldn't get 4GB G.skill PQ running stable on the P5W at 3.6 1:1. Check this thread out for more detail on P5K http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=144199 I loved the P5W - it served me well but this board is so capable for running with higher FSB setting and memory compared with what I was getting on the P5W. Its not perfect but its very good!.The bios also has extended memory settings which have been missing from the P5W

So nobody is using S-ATA DVD drive with this mobo?
Been runnign a Samsung 162 but it kept dissappearing in XP...and sometimes the board didnt even recognize it at booting(almost all BIOSes 1201-2004). So i switched it with an older IDE DVD-RW :-( BUt the SATA DVD-RW runs fine in my Sis' Computer so thats definitely a Asus/Board-Problem.
I am running my Sys on a 68board(1,85Vmch). My Pal is using 66board and is using the same SATA DVD-RW without any problems. Even with both our Drives his Board hasnt had any Problems...

XP is reinstalled now using enhanced ide mode and not AHCI. I looked but it seems the only ide drivers for this mode are the preinstalled microsoft drivers.
The raptor is slower so the os is a bit less responsive but I can now watch videos without major stuttering, there is still occasional minor stuttering but it is mostly gone. I have concluded AHCI shouldnt be used when PATA drives are connected and possibly even when incompatible SATA drives are connected. I disabled write cache on the raptor but its still currently enabled on all the other drives.

Not on this list of Asus compatible MBs http://event.asus.com/mb/45nm/
Well, it'll be sad to only get 18 months out of my P5W if I have to replace it to use a Penryn. I'd have to settle for a quad CPU with hyperthreading rather than dump the motherboard too. Already I see awful performance just using 802.11G to transfer files to the C2D computer, where moving my USB mouse around to the right spot becomes an adventure, so I want more guts. I can't always use Vista due to hardware incompatibility so no amount of thread handling improvements there mean much to me. Maybe if I run a cable through the attic things would work better all around, but that still costs more than I want to spend. Not sure where the next upgrade really needs to go.
Amazon is delaying the $79 power supply to December 21 as "unavailable", despite listing other vendors as low as $119, so I'm stuck at a very reliable 30% overclock (~2.4Ghz) until then, when I might be able to get back to 2.87Ghz to help overcome performance issues...
So I tried flashing this thing back to 0701 and 1707 to support my Conroe.
No go. Assus' flash utility refuses to go back claiming the BIOS is too old and I should "download the newest BIOS".
Go manually for ASUS BIOS c/o:D

Having recently changed from a P5W to P5K board and WinXP to Vista x64 I have been doing some googling for info and you may find this of use if you are running or thinking of installing Vista on the P5W.
This is a link to a great guide which will let you tune Vista http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=24912. These tools are also useful TweakUAC and EASYBCD v1.6. TweakUAC lets you switch off or supress UAC - EAsy BCD has numerous tools and allow configuration of multi boot with other operating systems.
Multiboot with WinXP - I found that just installing Vista x64 in a seperate partition on boot drive with Winxp caused HD data corruption - seemingly this is a know problem and EASY BCD is the solution. Here is a link to a complete multiboot install guide. http://apcmag.com/5023/dual_booting_xp_with_vista
Acronis disk manager is another tool that will also shrink the Winxp partition to allow creation of another on the boot drive.
working very well  & zero problems
Flashing back to an older BIOS I can help with as I have just tried 2004 and gone back to 1707. Download AFUDOS 2.11. Get the BIOS version you want and rename it to P5WDH.ROM. Create Boot Floppy or USB Flash boot - create Boot flash with either HP one posted or this http://www.weethet.nl/english/hardware_bootfromusbstick.php#. Copy AFUSOS and BIOS to floppy or USB Flash. If you are using Flash USB configure BIOS to change the boot sequence so that the USB flash drive is boot before a hard drive, and also disable "Legacy Diskette A" on the BIOS Main pageBoot . Insert drive/floppy - Boot to DOS and run afudos /ip5wdh.rom
I have just remembered that I forgot to to disable all CPU configuration settings especially virtulisation when I flashed the BIOS to 2004 which might explain my spurios BSOD with that version and why I am getting them when I flashed back. I might give it another try as others are giving it good posts - might be worh checking you CPU settings. You wheted my appetite as I am getting RAM with more potential so I have been looking into the dividers - more info on 4:5 2:3 dividers from EVA2000 http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1681867&postcount=33 points to memory with trd=6 being the culprit. He also refers t MB/NB temps - I stuck a 40mm fan on my NB which I found helped a lot. Here some more which all poiunts to TRD=6 as the problem .http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-115729.html
So what is the decisive thing here that makes you able to go backwards? That you rename the file? Or that you use AFUDOS 2.11?

In my experience both are required. Plenty of other posts in this thread with the same instructions. havent seen following this processs not work yet!.
I'll give it a shot, but I am 99% sure I already used 2.11 in my failed attempt.
Somehow I feel like a lab rat being trained by Asus.
What do you guys think, will 1707 most likely work? We have one with a quad ES on 1701, so probably yes. Or should I go 0701? Remember this is one-shot for me. If I aim after ES murder and before Core2Celeron support I'm bricked until I ebay some junk CPU :)

Hi, I have a "problem" that i dont know if it has been reviewed in the thread already, but since this thread has more than 200 pages well... i have just bought this motherboard and i flashed it to the 2004 bios, overclocked perfectly my E4300 to 3.0Ghz Rock Steady, im useing it with 4GB of Corsair XMS2 PC5400C4 memory modules all "overclocked" to 834 mhz since in bios there isn´t a plain 800 mhz option, i know this modules are 675 mhz marked, but they do 800 mhz with a hand tied in the back, im useing 2v in them for stability reasons only, since they work fine at 1.9v most of the time, only orthos makes them fail after some time of running it... well the thing that bothers me a little its that in bios post and in windows operating systems only reports me 3.2 GB of ram, when in cpu-z and other programs they see the 4GB i have installed, i know the lower memory showing in system panel its for the lack of PAE in windows 32 bit systems, so i installed as second OS Windows Vista 64 bits to "see" my 4GB, but to my surprise in this board still tells me that i only have 3.2 GB of ram, even in this 64 bit system...
This is the first board that gives me this "problem" (since still has a quite good performance, but you know, i want to see my full 4gb in control panel :p: )
Thanks all in advance for your replys to my problem, and hope someone can help me to set bios or something to see my 4GB of ram as i see a screenshot in this last page showing 4GB in Vista 64.

"...decisive thing here that makes you able to go backwards? That you rename the file? Or that you use AFUDOS 2.11?..."
AFUDOS 2.11/2.17 does not seem to have "revision check" as later DOS flashers.
- there are some sensitivities between BIOS'es CPUs/OS/features, which may be the reason later flashers discourage backward flashing.
- examples: [1707 + JMicron ROM + Vista SpeedStep]; [2004 + Enhance memory compatibility]; [1602 + Enhance HDD compatibility]
- see P5WDH BIOS section for more details: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
- renaming target BIOS to "p5wdh.rom" is the default filename "CrashFree" process looks for, on floppy or USB drive.
Have been lucky and have not had problems with new BIOS'es, including latest 2205.
- have tested BIOS reverting, all the way back from FEB, 2007.

i have two rapters in raido i have no problem watching videos
I dont watch the videos from my raptor it is just used for the operating system and main apps.
Although it is easy to blame the hard drives everything was just fine on the amd64 in fact my old amd64 system has a very slow old hard drive in it right now and has no problems whatsoever, I just watched a dvd mounted from an iso image on a hard drive (in this system) and sad to say it has stuttering, again not as bad as when using AHCI but enough to ruin the experience.
This is feeling like a downgrade as far as watching media is concerned, the OS itself runs faster vista certianly runs faster from when I tested it but watching movies is a poor experience.
To make things worse the amd64 runs on a budget asrock board whilst I paid for a premium board for the upgrade.
Is it the pci-e bus is saturated or something? dont know, I am going to try disabling speedstepping next and if that makes no difference I will try different display drivers, I wonder if the onboard mem controller on the amd64 is making all the difference, I certianly feel like selling this new hardware and going back right now, upgrading is supposed to be an enjoyable experience :(
The hd I watched the dvd from is mounted on the ich7 sata controller.

Ok guys, I am in dilemma. I want a Q6600 after price cutting but do not know what stepping. On the one hand this is B3 stepping available now and compatible with my current stable bios (1901). But this stepping seems not to OC as good as G0. On the other hand G0 require 2205 BETA bios which may cause problem with Vcore regulation. And for the time being, it is hard to get a G0 stepping. So what to do: get B3 now or wait for better bios and better Go availability?
Does somebody have some experience with B3, G0 and new bios? Any help appreciates.

Solving Vcore issue:
Disable EIST and all that junk, as per standard
Disable multiplier then re-enable it - vcore options will now be available
Set desired vcore
Save "overcloking profile"
On every entry to the BIOS load the "overclocking" profile you saved, go and disable multiplier, then re-enable it again, everytime you want to change vcore.
It works good that way. Oh, and it does not save a setting in the "onboard devices" section; onboard sound is disabled on each bios entry, so it has to be enabled too. Although, that will be solved when saving the profile.

hi all, just joined, been reading this forum for a while though. I wanted to start OC'ing my setup, but unfortunately a couple days ago I ran into some weird trouble. I've had this setup for almost a year running without issues, but now I can't post after a cold boot. All the comp does is spin up all fans, mobo led on, pioneer drive on, Benq drive off, hdd's spin up. Thought maybe the Benq was at fault, but disconnecting it doesn't help. Disconnected other dvd drive, no luck. Disconnected all hdd's, first just de pata, then one sata, then 2 satas, then all, no luck posting. Tested the seagates with seagate's hdd tool, no problems there. Rebooting several times has brought my comp back to life without apparant reason a couple times, but sometimes I had no luck at all getting it back up and running. The only thing that does work 100% is powering down the comp completely, so flicking the I/O switch on the PSU after powering down and let it sit there for i'd say at least 5 hrs. After that i can start up the comp, post, and get a standard boot into windows. I've had it running 24/7 after this issue for at least 10 days, just restarting the comp every now and then, and no problems at all. I ran orthos(5+hrs), memtest(over night), everest(several hrs) to test ram, changes ram slots, tested with just one ram stick, no luck, ram seems fine to me. In your opinion, what would be the most likely cause for this issue? I tried finding info on the net, no luck, i hope someone here has some ideas. I'm considering testing another PSU, but i would have to buy another one, so yh, i'd rather not. Btw, bios is 0701, never bothered upgrading since this worked fine for me so far. One other weird thing, the lian li has a 3 step fan switch on the front, going from step 1 to 2 makes the fans stop spinning, from 2 to 3 fans spin up, from 3 back to 2, fans spin, from 2 to 1, fans spin, maybe just a problem with the casefans+switch? Never had that problem before though. Not sure if I should post this somewhere else on this forum, if so, sorry in advance. All help very appreciated

Hi,
I got a Q6600 B3 a couple of days ago form ebuyer, I took a gamble on the stepping but to be honest I am not that bothered its not a G0.
Currently its clocked up to 3GHz and I'm happy with that.
Had to raise the vcore a tad for full stability.
If it had of been a G0 I would have been forced to upgrade to 2103 or even worse 2205....I am using 2004 at the moment.
Temps when idle seem to hover at 33c for the cpu and 50c for the cores (reading from Everest).

Ok, I don't want to go on your nerves, but before I go my one-way flash:
I need 410 FSB (x9) for that build, otherwise the whole thing is useless to me. Is that realistic to get out of a random P5W DH or do I better save my energy?

Yeah the only P5W DH I've had that couldn't do 410 was one I busted by running it for a few hours with the nb heatsink dislodged. :D

I got an early P5W DH that has limited vMCH but it did 410 with an E6300 and the limiting factor was the Corsair memory that failed tests at anything over 410. If I had known, I'd have gotten 'better' memory.
I've never seen a chart indicating OC ranges for different CPUs, but if my less-than-desirable MB can do it, a newer one should also be OK...

Oh, awesome. Good news for me then
What's the deal with the memory dividers on this board?
I should have 1:1, 3:4, 3:5 and 1:2.
When selecting 200 MHz FSB with a 800 MHz FSB CPU:
- 400 1:1
- 533 3:4
- 600 WTH?
- 667 3:5
- 800 1:2
When selection 300 MHz FSB with the same CPU I get more memory dividers:
- 450, yeah, right. Should be 1:1
- 600
- 750
- 800
- 900
- 1000
- 1200
What gives?

What are you complaining about? You get more memory dividers... what's bad about that?
600 @ 200fsb is the 2:3 divider
450 @ 300 is the 4:3 divider
Why should it be 1:1? You have 1:1 as well.
I really don't get what you're moaning about.

I don't understand why I get more memory dividers when I up the FSB from 200 to 300, while still using a 800 MHz FSB CPU. My understanding is that you don't get memory dividers lower than 1:1 if you have a 800 MHz CPU.
The math doesn't go in the 450:300 case.
Results from benchmarking indicate that 450 in the 300 case is actually 1:1 and that "600" in the 300 case is actually 4:3 == effective 400 MHz (800 in DDR speak).

Probably because DDR2 doesn't exist at lower than 400Mhz rated ddr2 frequency.
(300/4)x3 = 225 x2 (DDR) = 450Mhz
Works to me
4:3 on 300mhz isn't 400Mhz, that would be 3:4....
I don't really understand you. Higher mhz = higher bandwidth. What are you comparing to? 975x memory performance is a lot better than other chipsets.

I am comparing with my BadAxe1 with the 4 major memory timings being the same. It's very clear that Asus' labels are not what you get. I'll post some numbers Monday.

Looks more like the BIOS is just checking all available FSBrates and starts by showing from lowest to hightest. Weird that it gives more dividers but thats not bad news at all...the lower the FSB the more useless are some high Dividers^^

Try increasing the MCH volts. 4 sticks put more stress on the memory controller and the board. I had similar problems and ended up changing to a
P5K but plenty of people are running 4x1GB no problem on the P5W.

You must be not using a HB pencil or pencil modding the wrong resistor as the mod works if done correctly.

I tried them, they are buggy (i.e. vcore which wants to stay on Auto each time you get into BIOS and the HD Audio which disables each time you get into BIOS) but other than that I don't see anything better. I'll stick to 2103 until something good comes out.

Hi; I think I could use some help here :D
I am experiencing a rather weird situation atm.
I'm running my CPU at 3.6Ghz (9x400), and it is perfectly orthos stable when I test in small FFT's. But when I try doing large in-place FFT's to stress some RAM as well, it errors at about 8 minutes each time.
I have now ran memtest and it seems my RAMs are perfectly stable as well :O
Here's my voltages:
vcore: 1.450
vMHC: 1.55
vFSB: 1.40
vDIMM: 2.05
vICH: 1.05
I'm about to try 1.65 on the vMHC and 1.20 on the vICH now, think that might be the problem?

lawrywild, what do you think Asus is trying to accomplish by writing these new bios for this board? I mean 2004 seems very stable to me and if you go to Asus website our board is not even listed as a current product... I can't remember if that image is of the P5W DH but it does show what you should be doing, with a HB pencil that is.
I would have to look at my board to see if the image is indeed that of a P5W DH but from memory I believe that various Asus boards look the same in terms of the voltage regulator section of the board.
I can confirm the mod works, as when I set 1.3750 in the BIOS, I get 1.37-1.38Vcore under load. Before it would vdroop considerably.
The info how this can be done is within this forum, just that not all threads state which resistor and how in plain English.

Yes, right where it says P5W DH Deluxe you will see a small number like Rev1.03G or so. Right above/next the RAM DIMM closest to the CPU.

Yes, it's 1.02g but I'm looking for the SERIAL number to do an RMA. Should be something like 67MOAG... or whatever. I don't see it anywhere in that area, or are we talking two different things?

It's either on the back of the mobo or on the side of one of the PCI slots (not PCI-E).

Hi, use a usb flash drive. Put the bios file on the usb drive and in bios, go to ez-flash 2 and use that.
Would you mind testing my new bios? I would like to see if it's fully compatible with Q6600 G0. It's a couple of posts above. If you don't want to, then you need 2103/2205/2206.
PS: Oh yeah and give us results with that G0 on this board please mate! :D Lots of us are waiting for Q6600 G0's to plug in here :)

That's correct and you can have other stuff on the drive no problem.
Yeah, there is a chance, but 3 people have tested it so far including me and no problems. I don't see why anything could go wrong, there's just updated microcodes and a modified string (you'll see it on the POST screen  ). You have crashfree bios 3 available to you if it really did get screwed. If anything did go wrong though, most likely, you'd be able to atleast get into the bios to flash back to another bios. :)
I completely understand if you don't want to try it though.

Hi all.
First post here. But it's taken me ages to read through all the posts relevant to me.
I only had my first PC 4 years ago and everything I know, which probably isn't much compared to you guys, I taught myself - mainly through google!
So, a couple of weeks ago, I built my very first PC:
ASUS P5W DH MoBo
Intel C2D E6600 2.40GHz Conroe
2x1Gb Corsair XMS2 PC6400 RAM
ASUS EAX1950 Pro 256Mb Graphics Card
Quite a modest setup really, but to my surprise, the thing actually worked when I switched it on!
I've become very adventurous over the past few weeks and now the MoBo is in pieces awaiting some arctic silver 5 and a better CPU Cooler.
So, a big thank you to Lawry for starting this thread, to FreeCableGuy for his detailed guide on how to detach, clean and re-attach the NB and SB and to everyone else for their invaluable hints 'n tips.
Cheers
J

Does P5W-DH support E6850 cpu? I'm thinking of upgrading to this CPU but dunno whether it will work on this board. If it does support, any special memory requirement like faster DDR2 rams needed etc. I'm currently running on DDR2 5300/667 memory. Advise apprciated.

Well I recieved mine yesterday via Canada Post..
It is indeed the Q6600 SLACR stepping..
Only took a week to get here from Vancouver..from Ncix
Total cost $321 including shipping.
This cpu was packaged on July12/07
Since installing today a few hours ago..
I also bought a new case yesterday, Antec Nine Hundred. dropped MB temps down from 48 idle to 34 awsome.
Everest is showing MB temp as 34 idle
CPU is 19-22 degrees idle BIG TYPOON IS AWSOME
I had to flash to a higher bios when I installed cpu on boot I would get this message. " Intel cpu ucode loading error F1 to resume"
It still worked just had to hit F1 each time.
Thanks Lawrywild.
I will try your bios later today when I arrive home from work.
Will I have any problem going from 2205 to your modded 2004
So far so good, 3dmark06 scores up a few hundred from my e6600 scores.
I would like to hit 10K with this setup, do you think it's possible.?

Still not happy here. So I flashed back to 1707 to support a CPU that of course I don't own, but anyway, that works and my Celeron also still works. So far so good.
However, on the 1707 BIOS I get the problem documented in this thread that I can raise FSB only when I use SPD timings, and that kicks in around 300-330 FSB. That didn't use to be the in the 2004 BIOS. Obviously I can't do this. I have 8 GB RAM to drive and overlock at least 50%, so SPD values aren't gonna cut it.
Of course I can work around this with a variety of methods such as messing with the timings and divider after boot at low speed, this clock up, or by putting in new SPD values into the memory modules. It doesn't help that this BIOS doesn't have enough control over memory anyway.
But unless somebody has easier suggestions I'm afraid I'm through with this board. It sure is shiny and has no real clocking problems, but I really had it now with problems that Asus deliberately caused.
In any case, I greatly appreciate your help in this thread.

lol, I have the same problem, except mine is the opposite of your description - same thing with the vcore, sometimes its the value I picked, then on another boot its back at "Auto"! What a board.
As for your problems; create a "overclocking profile" or whatever they're named, and be sure to do all your changes first in the bios, then save to the profile - and everytime you reboot, just load the profile and exit bios...
I want a good bios...now.

Make sure that both the C1E and Intel SpeedStep options are disabled if you want to set Vcore manually else it will revert back to Auto ie. they are linked options.
I wonder why this is so on this mobo cos they are independent options on my P5B Dlx and Commando boards.

Should be 1:1
- 600
- 750
- 800
- 900
- 1000
- 1200
What gives?
When you select 200 Mhz FSB, the bios, no matters what cpu you have (i.e 800, 1066 or 1333 Cpu), gives you the dividers relative to 533 and 800 strap:
400, 533, 667 and 800 -> 800 strap
600 -> 533 strap
Note that, with the 533 strap, you can have also 1000 and 1200 Mhz for the memory with 200 Mhz for the FSB...so you're right, why the hell you have only five dividers? Well, ask Asus...
Edit: Well, thinking about it, maybe when the Ram Multi is above 4X, the northbridge is not able to buffer the data between the Ram and the Cpu, so in this case is not Asus fault, but a limitation of the chipset.
When you select 300 Mhz for the FSB, the available straps are 800 and 1066:
450, 600, 750, 900 -> 1066 strap
800, 1000, 1200 -> 800 strap
Here's a table that i made sometimes ago where you can see all the available Ram multi as a function of the strap:
http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/1340/clp21zk0.jpg
The DDR freq is given by Multi x FSB.
Note that, for the P5W-DH, the last row and the 1333 strap column are not available.

It's still a current mobo retailing at the shops, not quite EOL yet. Asus does support recent EOL mobo with BIOS updates for some time too, one reason why I buy their mobos.
btw, yours is prob. a B3.
Thanks, I am considering returning this CPU for the GO stepping. Did not realize there was such a significant difference in stepping.
Is the only true way to see what stepping you have is to read the code on the face of the chip?

i have 1.04G with BIOS 2004
when i boot i got New CPU Installed message press F1 to enter setup F2 to load default values and continue this happens very often
my first conclusion was the bios battery is weakened but when i entered the bios setup nothing change, they all set the way i set them, than i save the bios and exit. sometimes the new cpu installed message gone and more often i have to enter bios setup and exit and save changes many many times
finally after reading the user's manual i found a bios setup option in Boot > Boot Settings Configuration > Wait For "F1" If Error > Disabled
with that oiption disabled new cpu installed message still appear but doesn't wait for me to press anything, and continues entering windows xp
unfortunately my PC2-6400 4x1GB PNY RAM is detected as PC2-5300, and i need to manually put DDR2-800 in Advanced > Jumperfree Configuration > DRAM Frequency
so my workaround still has flaw, i managed entering windows but with PC2-5300
and for the last problem in ASUS website faq it said to use 4GB ram i need to enable memory remap feature in Advanced > Chip Configuration > Memory Remap Featured
i can't seems to find that option in BIOS setup and the BIOS only read 3200MB ram
and i'm using P4 631 if that matters
any comments would be much appreciated

I hate ASUS with passion. Technical support is the worst of anyone else, I swear I'll never buy another product from them. To explain why - my board died over a month ago, in June. Asus fiddled with RMA for a month only to send me an earlier rev of the board (1.03 instead of 1.04). When I complained, they claimed that I've sent in 1.02 according to the serial number (which was numerically larger than the 1.03 they have sent to me!). OK, I insisted so they carried out an investigation (a few more days). Well, they confirm I've sent in 1.04 and offer an equal replacement. Guess what? A week later I recieve another 1.03! WTF! I wish Asus was just wiped off the map, they do not deserve to exist.
EDIT: Alright, I'm venting a little, but really, just how stupid they think I am? I mean, each time they attach a piece of paper where it is indicated that I'm supplied with rev. 1.04 board but on the board itself it says 1.03... Jeez, what a bunch of incompetent fools.
OK, I won't say anything anymore :) Sorry about this, I just had to share this with someone. It's US ASUS, btw ;)

Hadnt expected that would happen with standard software even though I know it is safer to flash from a floppy or USB at boot - Pity the chip is soldered to the board.! But out of bad comes good as I have RMA'd it and now have a P5K premium which is even better for overclocking.
sesdave, please tell me you are joking that they soldered the BIOS chip onto the board so that a bad flash bricks it

Hehe, if you had so many warranty experiences with Asus, maybe YOU should look for another supplier ;) Just kidding :D
LOL, well the deal was I built a few rigs with the older P4P800 series and using an antec caes with the front usb header caused issues on 4 of them. Seems the header was not grounding properly (antec's fault) and it would cause the SB to fry. So that and one 6800 special gamer edition that served me for many year of overclocking and fail. The card was over 3 years old and Aus did not ask one question. I sent it in and 10 days later I had it back fully repaired. They are one of the best at warranty in my experiance...
Not to far off subject I love my P5WDH and I just RMA my Q6600 B3 stepping for a G0 stepping. I love www.frys.com and their 30 money back guarantee. They are awesome, about as good as newegg but they do not have as much component level. But sometimes they have killer deals with free shipping and for me no tax in NJ...

Hey guys. I've been reading this thread for the past 6 hours..and still I couldn't find an answer to why my overclock isn't going over 3.0GHz. You guys seem to have so much more success than I am with this board. My overclock goal with my e6400 is 3.2GHz and I am currently unable to reach that goal. I need some help getting there and help is very much appreciated =).
I have a system set up with the following components:
Intel e6400 + Scythe Ninja Rev. B
Asus p5w dh deluxe BIOS 2206
OCZ platinum xtc 2x512 DDR2-800, Rated @ 4-5-4-15
eVGA 7600GT
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive
Current stable (Orthos 8 hours) BIOS setup as follows:
CPU Frequency: 375 (Trying to get to 400)
DRAM: 750 (Trying to get 800)
Performance Mode: Turbo
PCI Express Frequency: 100
PCI clock synchronization mode: 33.33
Memory Voltage: 2.2
CPU Vcore Voltage: 1.4000 (tried to increase by 0.0125 increments to 1.5V)
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.30
MCH Chipset Voltage: 1.65
ICH Chipset Voltage: Auto (tried 1.20)
Config DRAM timing by SPD: Enabled (Tried 5-5-5-15 and 6-6-6-18)
DRAM ECC Mode: Disabled
Hyperpath 3: Disabled
DRAM Throttling: Disabled
C1 Control: Disabled
Virtualization Tech: Disabled
Intel Speedstep: Disabled
IDLE
Ambient Temperature: 24C
CPU: 38C
Core : 53C
LOAD (with TAT)
CPU: 50C
Core:65C
If everything stayed the way it was described above, except CPU frequency is set to 400 and DRAM @ 800, it will boot successfully into Windows, then be very unstable. If I let my system run for a while (surf a bit, chat a bit), I will eventually get a BSOD. When I start to run SuperPI or Memtest, the system will immediately freeze.
What other settings do I need to adjust to achieve 3.2GHz? Help is very much appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried setting performce mode to auto/standard, 1.4v/1.3v for termination voltage and 1.55mch/1.65mch (tried all combinations) and I get the same results. I can always boot into Windows with everything running smoothly at first, then get a BSOD if I let it run; or freeze completely if I try anything memory intensive (Orthos/memtest).
EDIT: 1.55mch @ 3.0-3.2GHz will not pass BIOS. Must be 1.65 for me to get into Windows.
And Gig4moller, I tried the CPU in my bro's P5k-C mobo @ 400FSB and everything ran smoothly =(.

Whats diff between turbo and standard mode, and do both honour the clock speeds for pci-e and pci?
Latest on my video problems.
I disabled intel speedstep and upgraded gfx drivers (had some trouble needed to use safe mode).
So far havent noticed anything major affecting video peformance and will be watching a few things after done this post to test it further, if this works I will try enabling speedstep to see if still ok, if speedstep was the cause of the problem I will be gutted since I wanted to run the cpu with lower power.

I've NEVER seen any difference between Turbo and Auto or Standard. Not in speed or clocks. There is a difference between the PEG Link modes on 3D performance and clocks though.
On a random side note, am I the only person who gets annoyed by the FSB always being 0.45555mhz above what is set? I just like to have my stock clocks to be like 2400.00Mhz not 2404.1 Mhz. But it's good at 370 fsb when you get 3333.3 Mhz :D

Hello everyone.
I am pretty sure this issue have been discussed elsewhere or in this thread but I couldnt find the info.
I just installed a e6850 (G0) in my p5w-dh board with bios 2205.
I have a 4gb kit of ocz (2x12024) with 5-4-4-12 stock timmings at 800mhz
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_vista_performance_platinum_4gb_d ual_channel
Now my only problem is that I cannot use my ram at 800 mhz. My bios either gives me 667 or 834. Is there a way to change and stay at ddr 800??
I have a friend that has a p5k premium board with the same cpu and ddr 800 memory and you can set the ram at 800mhz
Thanks in advance

The e6850 set the boot FSB to 333 Mhz, but the P5W continues to use the 1066 strap. Now, you get 800 Mhz for the memory with 333 Mhz FSB with the 2.4 Multi, that is however relative to the 1333 strap, that in this board is not selectable. The p5k has this option because her chipset supports officially the 1333 strap. So i'm sorry, but, in this board, it is not possible to select 800 Mhz for the memory with 333 Mhz FSB.

That's buggered, warming up your soldering iron still might not get you that chip, you may have to wield it like a Light Saber and storm the parts department (get a long extension cord).

Hey guys, I was lucky enough to be one of the few that got into the slickdeals post to get a q6700 for 385$. From what people are saying, all of these quadcores are going to be g0 stepping.
Just to clarify, I'll be needing to be at 2205 or 2206 bios to have the mb recognize the g0 stepping right? I'm excited to be swapping out my e6600 and getting more processing power!

I just want to clarify I have this set correctly.
When loading XP x64 with Intel RAID 0 Should I keep 32-bit transfer disabled?Does it even matter with RAID?
Logic tells me that since it's a 64 bit OS I should not enable this option, but I just want to make sure this is correct. Anyone?
TIA

I will replace my current Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherbord, OCZ 2GB PC2-4200 RAM and Intel E6700 processor, with a new Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard, OCZ 2GB PC2-5400 RAM and an Intel E6850 CPU.
If my new motherboard doesn't have the 2103 bios installed by Asus, can I bootup my system with my Intel E6850 processor to flash the bios with Alt+F2 method?
Second question, does anyone have a changelog of the revisions of the Asus P5W DH Delxue motherboard?
Revision 1.04G is the latest one?

FWIW I managed to boot and update the BIOS when installing a Q6600 on a new P5W just this week. I got the micro-code error, but it posted and allowed me into BIOS. EZ Flash didn't work, but Alt-F2 did the trick. I was relieved as I didn't have another socket 775 CPU kicking around if it hadn't worked.

By the way, I'm still having this annoying problem that I havent found a fix for yet...
My P5W refuses to boot with 8x multi. It will boot fine at 9x400, but refuse at 8x400 or even 8x266 for that matter. I had this problem in 1707 bios, and I still have it with 2004. Does anyone know what causes this? :/

If i am going to buy Q6600 is there possiblity that i will get the G0 ? how will i know which rev is it if i am going to the computer store, i could tell him to replace it with other if its not that, and they have computer there with internet so i could check the Serial number or anything else.
if you could tell me what to look for so i'll have some idea whatever its B3 or G0
i almost forgot the 2nd question, should i update to 2206 , i will must anyway if its G0, but if its not i dont want this beta to mess up stuff.
so its like if or if, should or should, because if they dont have the G0 at all i wont have the upgrade, but if they do i will need to check it so i will make sure i have to update. please inlight me m8s :D

i have 1.04G with BIOS 2004
when i boot i got New CPU Installed message press F1 to enter setup F2 to load default values and continue this happens very often
my first conclusion was the bios battery is weakened but when i entered the bios setup nothing change, they all set the way i set them, than i save the bios and exit. sometimes the new cpu installed message gone and more often i have to enter bios setup and exit and save changes many many times
finally after reading the user's manual i found a bios setup option in Boot > Boot Settings Configuration > Wait For "F1" If Error > Disabled
with that oiption disabled new cpu installed message still appear but doesn't wait for me to press anything, and continues entering windows xp
unfortunately my PC2-6400 4x1GB PNY RAM is detected as PC2-5300, and i need to manually put DDR2-800 in Advanced > Jumperfree Configuration > DRAM Frequency
so my workaround still has flaw, i managed entering windows but with PC2-5300
and for the last problem in ASUS website faq it said to use 4GB ram i need to enable memory remap feature in Advanced > Chip Configuration > Memory Remap Featured
i can't seems to find that option in BIOS setup and the BIOS only read 3200MB ram
and i'm using P4 631 if that matters
any comments would be much appreciated
U got to have windows 64-bit to "enable" your 4gig´s of ram otherwise windows will not be able to "see" it, that did it for me anyway!!:)
