View Full Version : The golden fan?

While looking at newegg's stock of fans, one of them caught my attention:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999127

~80 CFM at 20 dBa would surely make this fan an enthusiast darling no? So I ordered one and it is in my case at this moment. I have yet to isolate this fan to see how much noise it makes.....but does anyone else have this fan?

Are the specs over-hyped?

thanks

Looks like an ok fan but I doubt it's only 21dba if it's putting out 78cfm. Probably closer to 35dba. See if there are any indipendent reviews of this fan. I'll look around too. Still it looks like an ok fan and people seem to like it.

thermaltake fan ratings are utter crap. They test either from very far away. Or if it's a variable fan they take sound readings at the lowest settings and list the highest cfm. Air will create more noise than that.

Well you have the fan in your case so your in better position to test it than any of us, and TT spec lots of fans falsely, there Silentcat 90mm and 120mm are great and quiet but prob not true to specs but that fan you have is same as the rear fan in a lot of TT cases and the front fan is same spec but not LED in these cases all are rated 21db and there is no way its even 31db, I had to bin mines as they were so loud I could hear in next room through 2 doors, I now run same temps by cutting out metal from case ( It was honeycombed to start with so not as bad as some restrictive cases) and fitting 2x 140mm Aerocool 1000rpm 19db fans for now using the supplied 140mm to 120mm adpaters, but hope to fit them staight to 140mm soon.

It isn't golden, its blue - you colorblind or something? ;) :D

that fan is not quiet. A friend of mine - who is helping me with my first case mod project BTW - got that fan for his dad's computer. It does push air quite well but it isn't quiet doing it. The motor might only be 21dBA but the sheer amount of moving air creates more noise than that.

That being said, while it isn't exactly a noisy fan it definitely isn't really quiet. However if you don't mind the sound of air rushing around then it would work in that case. I'm a silence freak so most of my fans are barely audible save the stock cooler on my X1900XT (which is due to be replaced here at some point).

I have those fans. They push a lot of air, but are LOUD. No way their 21db, more like 35

I have 4 of these fans, and they are not quiet at 12 volts. They are pretty loud, so that 21Db claim is false.

GlobalWin NCB's (http://www.coolerguys.com/840556025054.html) are quite good too(comparison (http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=1&artpage=1708&articID=421)) if you want "pretty darn quiet" with decent air flow.

Thermaltake fan ratings are a blatant lie.

i've found the golden fan(s) in my sig - the Arctic Cooling AF12025 120x25mm - they do 56.3 CFM @ 24.5 dBA

move more air than yates, have better bearings, and a 6 year warranty - not to mention that they're not closed corner fans

yup got one of those fans for my am2 pc and they do move quite a bit of air, no bearing noise and very quiet, only slight sound of moving air from the restrictive vent on the back of my pc case

i don't really like much of anything over 35 db, less than 30 is preferred, but i like quiet, some people can live with the 60+ db deltas, but that' just not me

In scientific tests the IXP-74-14 gave 61cfm @ 30.4 dBa.;)

Got one... considering the Airflow, it's relatively quiet (Though the 21dBA crowd won't think so, I'm a Delta fan). Very nice. will be getting Sanyo Denki's though, if you have FS access, look at the one's J-Mag is selling. Nice pressure, Ideal for tightly spaced fin's or Thick Rads.

I'm going with the Sanyo-Denki's too.

Do you read Custom PC in the UK? - Look at their issue this month (Spetembers issue). They rate 50+ fans. They do their own tests and say some of the Sharkoon fans are some of the best, along with Vantec's Tornados.

They rate on CFM, value, Noise.

It's a good read and although they get different results that manufacturers, it's SHOCKING how far of Thermaltake's ratings are in their labs tests.

I had 2 of these fans, but dont believe the specs. It cannot push out 80CFM @ 20dba. On 12v it might push out 80CFM, but with much added noise!

The best high-CFM, low noise fans I've ever used are the 120mm Evercool aluminums....I'd say the ratings are spot on. The aluminum coloring might not be you thng though (tf, a bnch f kys a dad10....n jk1)

Sorry about the missing letters guys....if ever my avatar rang true, it'd be from a few hours ago when a third of my keyboard stopped responding

If someone can translate, that'd be great, I'm a little tired and can't read it myself, but I think it had something to do with 2 of my 5 having the blades make contact with the housing and clicking....

Anyway, I'm a big fan of getting strong fans and undervolting for daily usage, keeping them surprisingly strong and quiet....but also allowing them to kick it up a notch for benching ;)

Me too. Noise that is bearable for me would probably get to other people.

Besides, when I'm gaming I have headphones on too. and benching I'd be too "in the zone". So I agree. I want fans that kick ass!

Apparntly my Antec Tricool's that I have given to my mate (as I'm getting some Sanyo-Denki's) are rated at 40dB. Well they didn't sound that loud when he had then on full. In fact, his machine was quiet! - So I think it was possibly around 35dB or less.

Mine will be louder, but I have the sunbean rheobus fan controller if it's that bad!!!
