View Full Version : What do you guys think of this memory for DS3?
Confusion

**EDIT** This Corsair memory (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145590) is what im now looking at getting. Does anyone have an experience with OCing these?
Hey guys, I have my 6400 and DS3, but memory has really got me torn. Ideally, I would like to get the TeamExtreme 667, but since it's now ~$246, it's a bit above my memory budget. I would really like to spend under $200. I will be OC'ing my system to a certain extent, though admittedly it will be my first time attempting to overclock.
This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145015) is the memory I was thinking of buying, but before I do so I would *really* appreciate some feedback from those of you who know much more than I do.
OCZ Platinum (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227089) was another consideration, but I've seen mixed reviews of that.

this memory should work without problems according to corsair support

This Patriot RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220095) would also be an option. *Please*, somone tell me the best <~$200 memory for a e6400+ds3.

I would go for Corsair PC6400 C5's or C4's if you got the money.
C5's are 219US after rebate ... I would say if you plan on OC'ing then these would be a good bet. C4's are alot more $ (though less than the TeamExtreme ... at 255) .. but i guess depends how fast u wanna go :)

The Corsair C5's are like $177 after rebate at ZZF unless i'm looking at something different.

Yeah, ZZF has them for $177AR with free shipping. This looks like a winner to me unless somone has a strong suggestion otherwise.

It's because the board has a default vdimm of 1.8V if you didn't know yet.

I'm just wondering how well they overclock. I need something that will do at least 900MHz.

I'm having a hard time with OC with the DS3 + OCZ 6400 4-5-4 Plat. Granted I'm pretty unknowledgeable about DDRII or computers in general. heh.
Need to run more tests, but I'm having trouble running even 5-5-5-15 at 400 FSB. It seems to work fine when I run the timings AUTO, but that will bump the timings up to like 5-7-7 according to cpu-z.
I'm curious as to what other people are experiencing with the OCZ 6400 plat and the DS3 though.
OT random question, but after installing my rig I tried transfering about 3-5gb of data from an external HD over USB 2.0. That took about 7-9 min. Was that normal? I can't remember, but for some reason it feels slow.

Wouldn't it be better to buy DDR2-800 instead of DDR2-640 for the DS3/E6400?

Are you referring to the OCZ? It is DDR II 800 PC2 6400 or are you talking about PC28000, cause that's way out of my budget.

They don't make DDR2-640. PC2-6400 equals DDR2-800. It's just bandwidth vs clock speed.
BTW, i went ahead and ordered 2x1GB of that Corsair PC2-6400 CAS 5 to see how it will perform. It should overclock about as well as the CAS 4 stuff. It just hasn't been tested for the higher clock speeds like the C4 and C3.

My OCZ 1.9v DDR2-800 didn't work either. I just order Corsair Value PC2-5300 (slower at 667mhz) which supposedly works at 1.8v. I hope!

So the C5's are different than the ones linked in the original post? Price was about the same.

so how come the corsair one works ? when it requires 1.9 v +

C5's are the 5-5-5-12 ones linked in this thread.

Because 1.9v is closer to 1.8 then 2.1v is.

So, the question is, will my computer boot with 1.9v ram on the DS3, or do I need to use some cheeper sticks to boot and go into the BIOS to set the RAM v+0.1.

I had OCZ 1.9v RAM and it didn't work. I then bought cheap RAM and upping the volts 0.1, but it still didn't work. Supposedly you have to download a new beta BIOS to have it work, and I decided "screw it" and ordered 1.8v RAM and returned the OCZ.

Which RAM did you use to replace the OCZ? I'm really having a hard time deciding on something. Ideally I would get the Team 667 3-3-3-8, but I really dont feel like dropping $250+ on RAM when I think I could get something that would work just/almost as well for $70 less.

I don't really think the voltage is as much of an issue at times. The OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum is rated at 2.1v and i booted a single stick at 1.8v to get into the BIOS and up the voltage no problem. I think it has more to do with whether or not the board is going to be stable with that memory period and upping the voltage can sometimes help a little.

Do you guys think it is worth the $37 price difference to get the Corsair 800 5-5-5-12 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145590) > Corsair 675 4-4-4-12 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145015) ?

burningrave you booted on the DS3 on another board? For me, the 2.1v OCZ 6400 Plat, did not POST out of the box with a DS3. Not sure if it's the volts or whether the auto timings were screwy on the F1 BIOS.

The C4 Corsair rams require 2.1v, yet it still works

I'm currently on an Abit AB9 Pro but i'm considering going to an Asus P5B Deluxe or something pretty soon if Abit doesn't get their crap together with the BIOS.

Will the DS3 boot up with the Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 ram? Can anyone verify this?
I am going to be buying some ram for my DS3 and need to know if this is good.
Thanks

I ordered the same RAM, and it hasn't came in yet. I would also like to know the answer to that question. :/

Confusion, I bought crap no-name RAM (533mhz?) from my local Staples to get it to boot and act as temprory solution to load all my software.
I just ordered Consair Value RAM 1.8v 1GIG DDR2-5300, I'll let you know if it works.

Does anyone have experience using the Corsair XMS2 (prefferably 800mhz)?
