i have an MSI motherboard. link (http://img420.imageshack.us/img420/3936/msimobowe2.jpg)
when i bought the computer, it came with one 512mb stick of pc3200 memory, and about 6months later i upgraded it with another stick of pc3200
now i come to realise they have different latencies: mem1 (http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/5171/mem1qz2.jpg) & mem2 (http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/802/mem2la4.jpg)
i wana buy some good quality pc3200.. maybe ocz gold or something.. and idealy for it to be 2x1gig
now, considering the mobo only has two slots available for memory, i wonder whether it will be able to handle 2x1gb ram.. any way i can find out?
if there isnt, then i will buy 2x512 or high performance ram, but i would love to have 2gb

p4 (core speed 2.8ghz; fsb 100mhz; bus 400mhz; L2 512kb)
(2x512) 1gb ddr ram (different latencies)
nvidia 5700 OCd gfx card (the 5200 came with the machine)
120gb hdd (with 4gb left; came as standard)
40gb slave hdd (with 500mb left; added by me)

Do you know which motherboard it is ?

As already stated, you've missed the most important detail needed; the motherboard lol.
However, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't accept 2 GB total RAM but never take these things for granted. Find the motherboard model, use CPU-Z or MBM and look it up to see if your board will accept 2x1GB modules.

Do you have a Compaq Presario/ HP Pavilion?
If so, I think that board only supports a total 1GB of RAM.
No offence, but the board is crappy and using old technology.
What do you use your PC for? If it's just for work/e-mail/browsing then just leave it as it is. No point throwing money down the toilet eh?

Get these two sticks of Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231020
They should work just fine for you

I checked around couldnt find anything about how much memory it would hold, but its a very old board i doubt it will go beyond 1GB

thx alot for your help guys!
hmm.. maybe i should play it safe and just go for 2x512 of good quality pc3200 memory (any suggestions?)
and i wanted 2gb of memory because i want to run HalfLife2 well (at the moment im getting around 60fps on 800x600 and low detail). i thought i needed a new pc, but im gona save some money and just buy a better agp gfx card (X1600 ICEQ), 320gb seagate hdd to be a slave, and the ram
edit: btw yea, i do have a compaq presario :o
edit2: and another thing, ive been looking at some 2x512 ocz gold series ram, and it has '400mhz' listed as one of the specifications... if you look at the thread title, you will see i gave the two cpu-z screens for my memory, and it only goes up to 200mhz... does this mean i cant use the 400mhz ocz gold on my comp??

You can easily leave 2gb behind if you tweak your os.

one final question (i hope)... seeing as though i have only two slots for memory.. if i was to buy a top of the range pc3200 ddr400 dual 512 memory kit with heat spreadersl.. will they fit next to one another?

DDR ram is double pumped, so it's 200x2=400 mhz.
Wouldn't recommend having less than 10% capacity left on the hard drives. It seems to lower performance quite a bit.
??? both the ram sticks you have are the same latency. 3-3-3-8. IMHO, the $100 for new ram would be much better spent on an upgraded video card.

on the previous screen (Tab - Memory), it says:
DDR-SDRAM
1024Mb
133.3Mhz
3:4
2.5
2
2
6
+ i dont think i can handle a better gfx card (such as a top agp nvidia), as the nvidias cosume so much more power, and i dont think my 250watt will survive lol
im thinking of buying an X1600 Pro ICEQ... would that give me 100fps on 800x600 with mid/high detail in HL2?

WOAH SLOW DOWN!
I forgot to mention in my earlier post.
Your motherboard DOES NOT support memory rated at PC3200 (400MHz).
The maximum rated memory your motherboard supports is PC2700 (333MHz)!
It's a good thing I was looking through all my posts and paid a visit here again.
Buying the faster RAM will only lead to it being downclocked to PC2700 speed and therefore a waste of money.

Maybe a idea to pick up a cheapo amd Athlon 64 3500+ (am2) and cheap new mobo if your willing to pay about 140 dollars more. you coud get your self some quality ddr2 to go whit it. And get your self a X1600XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 IceQ. Instead of a x1600 pro agp 8x that wood run on your system at 4x as it seems that it the max it does support (the pci-x x1600xt is about 10 dollars cheaper).

Your memories actually have the same latencies at both 166 Mhz (333 / PC 2700 ) and at 200 (400 / PC 3200 ).
Stick 2 is just showing additional settings for 133 (which you are not running at).
I would stick with the ram you have, no real need to upgrade. Or as lookma suggested, maybe something like AMD Deal (http://promotions.newegg.com/AMD/AMD_mobo/index.html). Its socket 754, and agp, but they're cheap as sin. Think they'd support 2gb too if ya wanted that in the future. Or if you have a Fry's nearby, they sometimes do a loss leader with an X2 3800 and K8t890-a MB.. basically for the cost of the proc or less. ( Haven't seen their prices since the AMD cut, but before they were 279 for the combo, when the chip alone at newegg was 305)
