View Full Version : Help Needed - Thermal Throttle On Conroe ?!
Hello all.
My rig :
Bad Axe rev 304.
E6600 ES Stepping 5.
OCZ PC8000 DDR2 2x1024.
7900GTX.
Coolers I've tried :
Stock HSF.
Big Typhoon.
Zalman 9500.
Sonic Tower.
Problem is like this :
I see temps of around 48-55 in bios on stock.
In windows I see around 38-39 (with coretemp).
When I O.C and raise volts to 1.4-1.5 I see temps of 60-65 in bios, and when I o.c I see temps of like 80-85 !
What Am I doing wrong ? should I pay attention to this temps ?
I can bench at 3.6 with the cpu, when it shows temps of around 65-70 degrees.
Help Needed Please !
It reports higher temps. Just touch BT heatpipes and you will see yourself :)

i think that is common the high temps with conroes

lol. I've seen my prescott hit 90C + before (yea, it was on a stock thermal pad on a stock heatsink and running full load). most likely, your temperature sensor is reading the temps wrong. .1V is a lot btw.

I had a video card at 100C (bad heatsink) or so and YOU WILL KNOW IF ITS REALLY THAT HOT. There was heat radiating from every part of the card.

A. The Bad Axe reads temps a lot higher than they actually are,
B. If you have issues with heat OC'ing a E6600, try OC'ing a D 805 on air :P
1st of all - I always touch the heatpipes and I know they are not hot, but the problem is I have Thermal throttle ? when the cpu suddenly runs pi 50% slower than it should do ...
like at 3.6ghz I do pi 14.5sec for example , and suddenly at 3.75 I do 20 sec !
Is there a way to disable it ?
thnx !

Temps in Bios are reported higher.. while in Windows the temps will be lower cuzz of EIST(Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology).

weird man, that is very weird, did you check in the task manager that NO other application is in the background ?

Agree with [TAG]Imp in A and B. 805 is one hot cpu!

Sounds to me like something is reporting VERY incorrectly. If you've remounted 4 different heatsinks and are seeing the same temps.. either something is very, very wrong, or the temp sensor is borked.
Like previous posters said, feel the heatpipes (provided you are SURE you have a good mount). If that processor is really 80C, your finger will find out right quick. :D

I've been playing with this issue all day...It's funny because it varies at each boot up, despite the cooler/cpu speed/voltage remaining the same. About half the time I boot up, the Core Temp utility reports 35 idle with 55 dual-prime load (Ninja air). The other half of the time, with literally NOTHING else changed, Core Temp reports 52 idle and 78 load. Same ambient temp, same day, same everything.
Even more bizarre, if you run Core Temp, which matched my D975XBX's BIOS temp recording, as well as Intel's desktop utility in terms of temps registering, you'll get a far different result with SysTool. SysTool will report an exact 15-degree "hotter" envelope. Exactly 15 degrees. So if I booted and am seening a 52 idle from Core Temp, SysTool is showing 67. And if Core Temp is showing a 78 load, then SysTool will show 93.
It's nuts. I have no idea if it's EIST or not, but it's about 50/50 for me in terms of getting the "low" range mentioned above, or the "high" range. No throttling though regardless, so I'm sure the "low" range is accurate.
FYI: Running an E6400 at 400MHz fsb (3.2GHz) with 1.6v.
Thank you all for your replies ... basically what everyone saying - don't mind the temp reading .... lol ...
nothing to do with the thermal throttle or whatever it is ?

wow this is hot!! yeah liek they said , Badaxe will try ti fool u to think that tem is high , so u will be scared n stop OCing .. lol i guess tahts why its of soo much
O.k , I dont mind the temps reading - but how the hell can you explain me this pi run - again , one core have a thermal throttle or something like that ....

That is thermal throttling if I have ever seen it. Another good one to use is Sandra CPU arithmatic.

Check the mounting and contact pressure of the BT. A bad mount would also cause these problems. Im running a mini typhoon and temps are very low with a x6800 B1 cpu.
FUGGER For the Rescue !
Mounting was actually bad ...
Re-mounted everything , new thermal-paste ...
Now working Awesome !
With a half dead windows xp installation ...

Another thing you have to watch out for is metal backing plates and pins through the motherboard poking into the metal.
Use a flush cut trimmer or pliers to flatten them. Dont always trust the thin material to prevent shorting of pins.

S&M, what ICS PLL are you specifying for ClockGen to call out on your Bad Axe? My ClockGen is giving me some issues with what I thought was the correct ICS model...reboots and the like.
954123 is the ICS , I had also a lot of problems till bios update ... after bios update it's working great !
