View Full Version : Got my E6300 and DS3 but it's booting at 66MHz FSB on first boot...

Setup is an E6300 on a DS3 with a Scythe Mine cooler + 120 Silverstone case fan in the Mine.
Anyway, I set everything up with my Antec Super Lanboy case. When I press the power button, the fans all start up, then the system seems to hang before starting up fully. The first time I started it up I got to the setup screen, with my RAM (2x1 GB OCZ Gold) being detected correctly but the CPU reading as "Core 2 466 MHz (66x7)" and just hangs there. Pressing delete or F12 (BIOS or boot menu) didn't do anything. I figured this was my USB keyboard, so I went and grabbed a standard PS2 keyboard, plugged it in and reset the system. Now there's no video at all. Kind of wierd.
What do you guys think is causing this problem? The fan I put in the Scythe Mine only has the "sensor" pin in the 3-pin connector and then has a 4-pin molex connector used for power...could this be causing a problem?
I'm going to try resetting CMOS next, maybe that will clear it up? Any other ideas?

I have the same cooler and I also replaced my fan with a larger one which also has the same connectors you are talking about and mine works fine but on a different boeard. see sig

Ok well I tried booting with only 1 dimm of RAM and I got as far as I've gotten. The board detected my hard drive and I was able to press delete, but then it went to "Entering setup..." to a blank black screen with just a little cursor at the top.
I can't tell if this is the motherboard or the ram still though...
Anyone have any other ideas?

See the other thread I made for a more detailed description of the problem. The board won't boot (or won't get far) with 2x1 GB OCZ 5-5-5-15 DDR2-800, but I can kind of boot with a single stick. The processor is still set to 466 MHz and 66 MHz FSB though...I can't figure out what the problem is. The board doesn't make any beeps or anything to indicate overheating, and doesn't shut down.
I am running a GA-965P-DS3 and a Scythe Mine HSF (AS5 between it and the proc). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Why two threads? Merged. - bachus_anonym

What power supply.......

Sunbeam NUUO 550 watt.
This thing is completely unpredictable. Literally every time I turn it off and turn it back it does something completely different.
I was finally able to get into BIOS a couple boots ago, and it doesn't seem like it was overheating (32 C was the CPU temp) but its also apparently running on 66 MHz FSB. About a minute or two after I was in BIOS, I lost all input...neither the USB or PS2 keyboards I had connected worked. I turned off the computer manually and turn it back on, now it just like of starts, stops, starts, stops. Nothing on the screen though.
So I take it out, close the case and hook up my sound card (X-Fi which I know works as it was from my old system) and optical drive to see if I can boot again and install windows. This time, I press the power button and the computer turns on full bore (all fans seem like they are running 100%) but no video. Its just sitting there running.
How the hell do you fix something where it changes every time I turn it on and off? I seriously am completely at a loss as to where to go here. What a dissappointing day...

Does anyone have any other ideas? Should I head to Best Buy tomorrow and try some different ram?
It almost seems like a power supply problem. I guess I'll also have to try using a different PSU and see how that works out.

only yhing i can think of to try and get vid is to turno off monitor, then unplug it from pc, then plus it back into pc and then turn monitor on and then power on pc

Bah it feels like its got to be the motherboard...could bad RAM or bad compatibility with RAM be causing all of this?
It was acting pretty consistently for a bit...booting up seemingly normally but freezing when I tried to get into BIOS or hit F1 to continue booting. Then it stopped getting that far, now its back to the full bore vid card and no video on screen. Wierd.

Ok I'm actually back to thinking its got to be the RAM. Looking at this thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1618785#post1618785), it seems as though this RAM needs 2.0 volts whereas the DS3 is only giving it 1.8 right now. That would explain why I normally can't get all the way into BIOS...doesn't seem like I got a very good stick if it can't even do that at 1.8 volts but oh well. I'm gonna try to clear CMOS and then go for it straight into BIOS...haha hopefully I can get the vdimm up to +.2 volts and solve the problem.

Just putting this up on the checklist, but have you made sure it's not a grounding issue?
I didn't get my DS3 yet, but I read that it's a bit smaller than the standard ATX. Maybe the board is mounted too closely to the case?

yeah mayakindguy, I even remounted it about 4 times haha. Its a bit thinner than standard which ended up being EXTREMELY helpful in this little Super Lanboy case (could take it out without undoing every single cable haha).
Anyway - it looks like the RAM was just undervolted afterall...I was finally able to get into BIOS and up the DIMM voltage by .2 volts (to 2.0, I think) with a single DIMM. I added the second stick (so its dual-channel) and can now consistently boot everytime. Still working on the clock frequency issue but I think that was a result of the RAM being undervolted (and not being able to run fast enough for the processor). I'm just going to set the CPU Host Frequency to 266 and hope for the best :)

Glad you're close to working things out. I'm planning on basically the same build. Hopefully without all the headaches though.

Haha well I'm definitely kind of a noob still...this is really only about the 4th build I've done in my life, first Intel build in 4 years. I really should have known what the voltage of my RAM needed to be in order to make that a first priority (I tend to just throw everything together, plug it in and hope it boots first try).
That was definitelymy biggest problem...I can now boot perfectly everytime and am currently installing Windows.
It's still strange though that my CPU is detected at 466 MHz. I manually set the CPU Host Frequency to 266 MHz, multiplier at 7 and it still boots up saying that. Maybe just need to update the BIOS? I'm going to install XP and see what Windows and CPU-Z says.
Thanks to everyone for their responses...and mayakindaguy, I wouldn't wish something like this upon my worst hardware enemy haha. Here I was, all excited to build this comp only to get it all put together and not be able to even boot. 9 hours later and I'm close to a happy camper :).

did you fix the problem ?

consider flashing the bios if you are using F2...there is an F3 out for the D3.
the low cpu mhz for the core sure sounds like a bios problem!
