Since I won't be getting a processor until next week sometime when they actually start selling them, i figure I might as well put my new northbridge cooler on to replace the stock cooler on the Gigabyte 965p-ds3.
I Removed the cooler however there is this hardened thermal paste stuck on approximately 30% of the northbridge chip left. I currently only have 70% isopropyl alocohol at my disposal. It will not come off with that an a que tip. Any other suggestions?
I am replacing the stock cooler with a Zalman NB47J cooler.

I've use thinner on my gigabyte Geforce 6200 heatsink. The thermal compound was more like hardened glue, it was yellow, nasty stuff :slapass: gigabyte

Acetone (try nail polish remover) helps a lot with more persistent tims. I just replaced my own ds3 nb and had similar difficulty with the tim. I relied on my nails through layers of cleenex/seran wrap to get the harder bits off. Otherwise you could try scraping it with a small flat razor blade and copious amounts of isopropyl alcohol.

Acetone worked great. Called the miss's up at work and asked where the nailpolish remover was!

Like eva2000 said, works very well. I always use it.
So how hard a job was this on the DS3, and what kind of temperature benefits would I see from, say, an HR-05 without a fan on the NB?
I only intend to overclock to, say, 360 on the FSB - is it worth it to me to install a new NB heatsink?

This is a bit off topic, but I read this (http://www.maxitmag.com/testing-bay/motherboards/gigabyte-ga-965p-ds3-motherboard-review/)review of the DS3.
They said that they got 450FSB with +.3v on the MCH. What is the max safe overvolting of the MCH if you're going stock, and what's the max with aftermarket cooling?

It'll depend on temperatures.
