View Full Version : 1st time W/C build on Opty 165

I have managed to get my 165 to 2.7Ghz on air but voltage and temps are now limiting me so, I have put together a potential W/C setup to try and get some more from it - rly after some opinions as this will be the 1st time I have built one.
Swiftech Storm Rev 2
Swiftech MCP655
Black Ice Stealth GT240
6ft of Tygon 1/2" Hose
Artic Silver 5 - 3.5g
Alphacool Repack Bay Reservoir- UV
12x Plastic Clamps for 1/2" Hose
Bottle of Fluid XP Coolant(Deionized water/Dye & coolant in one)
Swiftech 500 Coolsleeves
2x Thermaltake 120mm Thunderblades - Blue LED
2x A C Ryan 12" UV CCFL's
Here is a thrown together sketchUp detailing the main componant locations in the case - I believe the best route would be Res > Pump > CPU > Rad > Res, I would of detailed the tubing but, thats a bit too hard for me in SketchUp...
http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/2682/ttarmorsketchupvt6.th.jpg (http://img377.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ttarmorsketchupvt6.jpg)
Hopefully it will look at bit like this Armor LCS (http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Chassis/fulltower/armor_lcs/ve2000bws.asp)
Not quite sure I'm gonna fix the RAD yet tbh, I have seen a few about where they have just 'jammed' it between the drive rails but, I'm not too sure if this would please me too much - so im open to suggestions.
Thx

"Best route" is pointless if it makes your tubing longer. Shortest loop with the least bends and kinks always wins.
Also I have to ask, will you be running with the IHS or without? If youre keeping it capped, I would go for the MP-05 LE w. #3 delrin injector plate.
You'll want to buy at least 10 feet of tube.
DDC-Pro/Ultra are better pumsp than MCP655/D5 and 50Z.
Ditch those thermatake fans for Yates. :lol2:
Ditch the fluidXP.

Ditch the fluidXP.
I 2nd that...I think its added some funk to my loop. I'll post about it later.
On my first loop I got 15 ft of tubing and only had a couple feet left due to a cutting mistake here or there...having too little come build time would be a PITA.
Also, check out this (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107474) post on Fluid XP. You may not experience the same results as I did but it would be good to be aware of the possible issue.
I think I'm just going to sell my extra bottle to someone who just has to have it anyway or something.

I would also recommend the 7/16" id Tygon or MasterKlear tubing.

I would also recommend the 7/16" id Tygon or MasterKlear tubing. And definitely the Yate Loon fans in a pull configuration.

I presume you are refering to the Alphacool Laing here (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=201&products_id=4508)?
There is a note at the bottom relating to the water additive to use, if I am not to use Fluid XP+ (as looks the case - that gunk dont look nice) then what additive should I use with the DI water?
TBH I wanted LED fans and thats why I chose the TT Thunderblades, I cant find any Yate Loon LED fans tho, so I may stick with them....
I am not gonna removethe IHS yet but, may in the future so would I be best getting the Storm for future-proofing for when I do remove it?
Also why get the 7/16 tubing, would it have a slightly tighter fit over the 1/2" barbs? Would I still need jubilee clips over the tube/barbs or not & would the slightly smaller tubing provide a slightly better flow rate? Also will get 15ft I think after all :)
Sry for all the questions just want to get this right 1st time

Use Pentosin (http://www.petrastechshop.com/peg11coadb.html) if you want red or blue. If you're running all copper you can also just use a few drops of iodine to keep stuff from growing in your loop since you dont need any corrosion inhibitors.
Blue LED Yate Loons (http://www.petrastechshop.com/12yalod1blle.html)
7/16" ID 5/8'' OD tubing matchs the ID of 1/2'' barbs better then 1/2'' ID tubing. It does fit tighter, but there's no excuse why you shouldn't use clamps.

Pentosin is blue under normal light...(unless you go with the red version ;) ) but doesn't glow under UV.
After my experience with the UV 'blue' fluid XP I'd recommend just skipping the UV fluid glow and maybe put those UV coolsleeve wraps around the tubes if you want them to glow.
Yes, Petras will ship to the UK.

Yup he will indeed.
You dont really want dye in a loop with a proper block (MP-05, Storm, NexXxoS XP) unless youre a big fan of taking the CPU block apart every couple of months to remove the gunk thats sealing the impingment jets...
Yes, I mean the Laing DDC with Alphacool top. Specifically the DDC-Ultra, which you can find locally here:

Ok, amended list reads as follows
Swiftech Storm G4 - Rev 2
Alphacool Laing DDC Ultra
Black Ice Stealth GT240
15ft of 7/16 Masterkleer Hose
Arctic Silver 5 - 3.5g
Alphacool Repack Bay Reservoir- UV with 2x G1/4" to 1/2" fittings
12x Plastic Clamps for 1/2" Hose
5x Swiftech 500 UV Coolsleeves
2x 120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12 - Blue LED
2x A C Ryan 12" UV CCFL's
10x Stainless Steel Jubilee Clamps
Pentosin G11 Additive
I would like the Red Pentosin but, couldnt find it on Petra's - I think that red H2o in Blue coils would look quite cool & it would match the light on my Evercool. Anyone know where to get the Red Pentosin or should I just Email Petra's?
Thx

Youre in the UK arent you?
I'd get a PA locally instead of the GT, much better rad.
As for the G12(red) pentosin, Alex said he was going to add it to the shop soon, so yeah, send him an email.

yeah I'm in UK but, tbh I am trying to keep my suppliers to a minimum to cut down on fuss (brain cant keep up - lol) also the Thermochill will increase my already quickly expanding budget so, its a no-no unfortunately, thx for the suggestion tho.
Also have already emailed Petra's regards the order so, will wait for a reply b4 mentioning the Red Pentosin.

So all done in 2 orders, also if you can spare £26 the best investment would be a GPU block, I would recommend the Aqua-Xtreme MP-1 (http://www.extremeprometeia.com/cgi-bin/ss000005.pl?PRODREF=83&NOLOGIN=1) - adding a GPU block helps balance the value of your setup, spreading the cost over 2 things you need to cool!

Thanks for that but, I have already ordered the RES tbh, also I have thoughly priced all this up and it aint much more expensive, to buy all this stuff and have it shipped from the U.S., than to buy your list from the U.K.
Also I listed this stuff because I want it and tbh I might as well get it now rather than having to fork out for it later on. :)

Ah well, I find it quite amusing that you think its better to spend MORE for LESS performance. There is very little difference in my spec, im just trying to help you - showing you how to maximise your spend if your on a budget! A res is the last thing you should spend money on if your on a budget! Why spend it on that when you could get a GPU block!
I also dont see why your buying it all from the US, when you can get it in the UK for the same price! This saves warrenty hassle and faster shipping!
I'll leave you to your idiocy, I have tried to help you.

Right, well as I said I have already purchased the Res, so that isnt even in accounted for in my budget - which tbh although I would like to keep it as low as possible but, not at the sake of sacrificing the best componants which I took from the sticky in this forum, I am not building this on a shoestring - I am preparedto spend the money if it is justified ( I was shocked to see the difference on price between the PA and the Stealth GT tbh but, having read about it now I am happy to spend the extra)
Also I am only interested in cooling the CPU atm(sry should have made that clearer) as I have an Arctic Cooling Silencer on the Gfx Card and I am happy with that until I change the GFX card early next year.
Regards the U.S. - U.K. price thing I was directly comparing the products in my 1st list, now that has changed it may be prudent to purchase from the U.K., which I will reinvestigate for sure as I always do before purchasing an PC componants.
I appreciate your help but, just because I have an opinion that differs from yours does not make me an idiot.
Thankyou

Pretty damnn good if I may so myself, thats what I had until last week. If you have the space for it though, .3 is most definitely worth the extra 5£. Thats true for all rads, btw.

08-01-2006, 03:51 PM
You got space for a shroud? (either the thermochill ones or a custom-made one)
Shroud + fans in pull is really the ultimate for PAs. Doesent have to be big, just a couple of CM will do the trick, but I realize this can be a problem in some cases as PAs are quite thick already.
In any case, 120.2 kicks butt :)
