I'd probably say a stripped version of XP, though that is technically illegal in most instances.
for standard use without optimizations to hell, I'd put my money on win2k. it uses less ram too.

If you want to see ust how far you can push it, you could use a linux live cd. Something like SLAX frodo, with the linux version of superpi, and you'd get much higher results. But if your comparing against other people, they might consider it cheating :P
You can have a look at them here:
http://www.slax.org/download.php
ftp://pi.super-computing.org/Linux/super_pi.tar.gz
The problem is that you need some more detailed knowlage of linux to get it all running.

yeah win2k especially for 3dmark 2001.
above that, it dont make much difference.
i dont recall my Pi results from xo to 2k though.

I have to say, I always get better scores with 2k.

I tried both xp and 2k on a multi boot setup and 2k does give slightly better scores. Win 2k as an OS is so much smoother than xp, its quicker to use I think.
Will any1 upgrade to vista? I uses sooooo much resources its funny.

I was gonna try server 2003 and see how that goes then try the new xp sp3 2006 and see how she does..
Right now im on A os recomended by haltech its severly stripped XP something like 125 megs total on cd, its blazing fast but not too good for what I do which is mostly gaming, has some problems seeing games installed onto diff HD's and cant install certain patches etc etc..

It really don't matter, because it would only be "fair" to compare to someone with the same OS.

probably very true... that certainel does qualiy as a stripped own version of XP(err well all of windows combioned is more accurate but yeh)also, here is a trick... always run benches in safe mode if at all possible(super pi mod and the like which dont really require full driver support just CPU power).

Resource usage-wise Yeah, 2k does tend to use less.. but for me.. XP seems to boot up much faster than 2k, it also seems to use explorer faster too.. but other than that they seem the same to me in terms of performance.

From what I have been hearing is that Windows 2K seems to like AMD processors better and XP seems to like Intel processors better but the XP-64 and Vista seem to hate them equally.
