View Full Version : So where is P5WDH vs. P5BDL - 975 vs. 965 ? !
wonder why this really interesting theme is not covered by a review so far ..
lets hope that a xs-forum member will give us some closer evaluation
of these 2 motherboards .

I have the P5W DH, if someone could send me the P5B, I'll gladly bench the bejezus out of them :)

I have both boards. I like each for different reasons. The P5W DH is better for maximum CPU clocks. But I've found the P5B runs Kentsfield better on air. The one advantage to running Kentsfield on the P5W DH is that certain BIOS versions allow multipliers up to 20. The P5B doesn't offer that option, yet. Also, I haven't tried Conroe with the P5B yet.
The P5B runs the 2:3 ratio a lot better than the P5W DH. There's been so much attention here on FSB and very little on RAM speed. In SuperPi at least, 3600MHz (360X10) with 2:3 ratio is almost as fast as 3800Mhz (380X10) running 1:1. You don't necessarily need to run 400+ FSB to have a fast system.

Depending on the benchmark I believe this would be the case. Any chance of posting a link to an actual benchmark that shows increased RAM frequecncy offsetting a decrease in FSB with C2D? It would help me with my RAM selection.
Thanks if you can help.

I don't have a 3660 vs. 3800 comparison handy. But here's an example of how RAM speed makes a difference. Both tests done at 3600MHz.
400X9 1:1 (RAM at 400MHz)

360X10 2:3 (RAM at 540MHz)

Exactly what I wanted to see.
Cheers mate. Looks like a little more damage to the CC in the next week.

so this seems one of the open questions .. is the 975 the better option for the 6600 or 6700 and max fsb.
and the 965 the board of choice for 6300 and 6400 with better RAM support because of the advanced memory controler ..
and fsb vs. ram timings
as usual some interesting findings by sierra :toast:

as usual some interesting findings by sierra :toast: Yes. Did I miss the thread his comparison was in? Threadworthy for sure, in that it help people find a balance and sweet spot with their Conroe mobo/CPU/memory choices.

Thanks:) I've never used Allendale, so I can't answer that question. People have gotten high FSB with both Conroe and Allendale on 965 boards. But a test like 32M is useful to see just how fast those FSB clocks really are. I believe guess2098's testing showed the DQ6 was about a minute slower in 32M than the P5W DH at the same speed. From a benching perspective, that's a significant difference. But I realize some people don't care about Pi, which is fine.:) From what I've seen, 3D performance of 965 boards seem to be on a par with 975 mobos.
something that really warps me from the 965 chipset is the incompatibility issues with RAM you can see everywhere here in this forum.
I have 4 sticks of "fatties" - 5400-UL vers.1.3 lying around carefully burned in last year
and want to use them for 2 hdtv encoding rigs (E 6600 ) mildly OC @ 320 FSB
so the WS pro seems to be my other option ,
well ... I don`t need all the fancy bits of the asus deluxe versions.
