View Full Version : cpu cooler on nb
hi im on the look for an sapphire pi-a9r480 mb and i want something fanless to cool the nb.
Since i got an 165 i need high htt(hopefully 330+) and then i want good cooling without a fan. so ive been looking around for some cpu coolers that can be used. but its kinda hard just by looking at pictures.
I guess the hr-05 is also an choise, it would certanly be easyest and probably cheapest too. but im conserned it aint enough.
the scyte katana looks like an good choise, ok weight and price. but do you think it will fit?
any other ideas?

I think the HR-05 will be your best bet. Normal CPU coolers will be hard to mount and will be too large. An HR-05 (http://jab-tech.com/Thermalright-HR-05-pr-3350.html) with a 70mm Sunon fan (http://jab-tech.com/Sunon-KDE120PHB1-70x70x15-MagLev-Cooling-Fan-pr-2949.html) should be more than enough. If you want to go a little bit further, you can put an 80mm Vantec Tornado (http://jab-tech.com/Vantec-Tornado-80mm-and-92mm-fan-pr-1494.html) on the HR-05, provided that you have some zip ties laying around and that you don't mind the loud sound.
huh. you missed my point! NO FAN! ;)

Oh...no fan. Well then...I'd recommend a fairly small CPU cooler if you can find one. It would need to be light weight and small in order to work well as a NB cooler. I don't know how easy it would be find find a light, small CPU cooler that would work as well as the HR-05, however. Just stick with the HR-05.
Fake edit: After looking around a bit, it looks like the Jing Ting Forcetake Chipforce (http://jab-tech.com/Jing-Ting-Forcetake-Chipforce-JTS-0006-Offset-Chipset-cooler-pr-3450.html) might be a good option. It has a fan on it, but it only pushes 5CFM, so taking it off wouldn't make a performance difference. I'd say it's probably your best option, but I haven't read any reviews, so I don't have anything to back that theory up...

Taking off that fan would kill that heatsink. 5CFM is SO much better than 0CFM with that small of a heatsink.
TBH, I don't know of a good passive aftermarket HSF :(
a normal cpu cooler would have an to big footprint to fit. thats why ive been looking at heatpipe coolers. the scyte katana is 300g (versus hr-05 145g)
the plan is to use nuts and bolts and a plate on the backside of the mobo to fasten it down.
if it still should be to heavy ill just wire it to the top of the case to take the strain of the mobo

You could just cut down a normal cpu cooler to size, altho a heatpipe heatsink would do a better job. my old celeron heatsink.....

yeah, i think the hr-05 would cool better than that heatsink.
any other suggestion\ideas or pictures?

I just got a Thermalright SI-97A. It's actually pretty small. You could zip tie it to your NB and get some damn good temperatures, I would imagine. It's a bit pricey (about $25), but it should provide you with very good cooling. I don't think it's too big to get in the way of things, but I'm not quite sure. The Thermalrigh Ultra 90 might work a little better than the SI-97A due to it's shape. It's very similar in shape to the HR-05, but it's a little bigger and should give better cooling.
the si-97 would take up to much space i think, but i could be wrong. nice weight though(280g)
The ultra 90 should perform good, but its a bit pricey and heavy.
thats why katana is high up on my list(300g)

I have to admit that a CPU-cooler would be nice (since this is extremesystems :woot:), but if U want a good performing chipsetcooler I think U should get this one

yes, the hr-05 would be the only alternative if id choose a nb heatsink.
edit: ill think ill buy that anyway, so then i can atleast test it, and just use it at the pwm instead...
