View Full Version : Making My Own Liquid Metal

So I've seen a lot of stuff about how great liquid metal is and I've seen Thrilla's home made compound, so I've decided I'm going to make some myself and see how well it works. The biggest problem I have is finances. I've found all the supplies I would need to make liquid metal, but they would be quite pricey. I do believe, however, that I could create some liquid metal that would outperform Cool Laboratory's. I would simply need about $75-80 or so to get started. So what I've considered doing is taking pre-orders. I would need to know who would be interested, so I could see if it would be worth my money/time to make a big batch of this stuff. I'm not quite sure on pricing, but I think it would go something like this: $6 for one application (enough to completely cover one CPU) and $3 for each additional application. I don't know how many people out there would be interested, but I'm definately interested in making some. Just post here and let me know what you think...

If you magically are able to create a liquid metal, with actual standardized tests that show:
•It beating the current offering
•It being non-corrosive in a long period of time
•It being non-conductive/non-capacitive
•It working for more than a month
Then I might consider. Seeing as I have 0 faith in you being able to do this, I'm gonna have to pass. Enjoy yourself though. I'm sure your vast knowledge of thermaldynamics will be enough to create a TIM better than the large corporations.
But hey, if you have the money and are interested, do it for your own personal benefit/learning.

I doubt you will get very many people to follow through with their money after they say they are interested. You would have to prove this stuff works first to get people interested. I don't think many people would be willing to take such a risk. But only 80 bucks, that's not much at all so maybe you can wash a few cars are trim the neighboots lawn. Good luck though. :)

so you'll beat the ten's of scientists who formulated stuffs for the big companies with your own homemade thermal interface material?

You should first do this as a hobby and that costs money

I think you are going to need a few shipments of "Good Luck".
But boy will we look stupid if it works.

:p:
Ok, maybe not that often with TIMs...

It's just a mixture of gallium with some other metal(s). It really depends on what melting temperature you want.
@Zardokk: If you need any help just shoot me a PM. In a few weeks I'll have some time to work on the idea with you together, if you want too.
I think I can get gallium for a pretty good price, but I need to look-up the source again to confirm that it's still for sale.

I'm hoping that's what happens, lol. I really don't know if I can do this, but I'm going to give it a shot. I'm flat broke right now, but I do have about $80 coming to me soon...not sure if I should dump it into this project or not. I think I might buy smaller quantities of the stuff I need. It would make a smaller batch, but at least I wouldn't be putting that much money into it. I could make a small batch (probably 10-15 applications) for $40-50 and see how well it works.

To alexio: gallium is exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't completely sure what to mix it with, but I figured I could test until I discovered what works. I can get 5 grams of gallium for about $50. I'll send you a PM and discuss things further.

Seeing as you can't come up with $80 dollars to fund your own project I highly doubt you will see many people putting faith in you and your TIM. Myself, I stick with AS. But hey if you want the best go make your IHS or heatsink out of solid silver or gold for the best heattransfer, although I hear diamond is better.

3 words:
fzuck liquid metal
and i agree - no one will fund you until you have proven the performance of the TIM is comparable to CLP
in all honesty, stick with AS5 or whatever you use (i prefer shin-etsu G-751)

$80 yeah right. You won't even get the chems that cheap, even if you get approved for those chems. I hope you have access to nice organic and inorganic chemistry labs.

Welcome to the normal ending of just about every single XS new post.:nono:
Post and idea and you get flamed at the stake :slap: - Post results and become a Gawd :woot:
@You flamers the BBQ is at the [H] take it there.
@Zardokk go for it. DIY inventers are born every day. :fact:
Also @Zardokk, I have a bunch of copper "dust/shavings" from making my evap if you are interested U pay ship and it's yours.

It might possibly because not everyone respects Zardokk that he's having a hard time...as well, this is obviously not plausable, so what can we say? He's having trouble coming up with $80, and wants to create a nex-gen thing. We all say "best of luck", but we're not buying it until we see results...

Respect need not be earned from others who are speaking for mouth not head. In other words if you all are not min. Chem Major's then why are you saying no?
You ever have an idea but were affraid to say anything on forums because of the flame you would take for it.
We all say "best of luck", but we're not buying it until we see results
No you all say there is not a better idea to find by him/anyone here. Not mattering again who has the idea.
WTF is $80 bucks now days? Sell your baseball cards or stamp collection and go for it. Who ever not just Z-man.
@Shpoon I am not attacking anyone here. I just hate how this happens a lot on forums. I have made 2 evaps, 1 leaks the other is plugged shut. So what I am making a 3rd. Live, learn, f it up, try again.

I'm a little confused here, and not trying to start an argument...but:
Respect need not be earned from others who are speaking for mouth not head.
Sure it does, the world doesn't belong to all educated workers. I say no because he is not a Chem Major. I say no respect, because of his attitude towards certain things (you probably missed his now deleted post in Wamps).
You ever have an idea but were affraid to say anything on forums because of the flame you would take for it.
No...flaming is done because we have the privacy of the internet. In reality, it's everything people want to say to your face, but don't have the balls to. It's the down-to-earth, honest opinion. Taken with a grain of salt, it's constructive critisism. Pick yourself up and move on.

to which you replied:

I suppose this was misread/not read:
But hey, if you have the money and are interested, do it for your own personal benefit/learning. (by me)
I made the $80 comment because the way he said it made it seem like it was going to take some time to come by.
I honestly hope he does this, doing your own projects are loads of fun. However, foresight is really key here, especially when a conversation tone is in your head on the internet. Zardokk should have started something, made a progress thing, and I'm sure the support would have been there. Asking if anyone would buy it probably wasn't the best choice though.
Just my 2 cents.

lol if ppl are interested count me in, I still have a small amount of this stuff left to experiment with, just need an experienced tester to approve my results.
EDIT: I was about to make a guide on how to make your own liquid metal lol, having problems with the site however :(

I missed that gem. Got a copy?

It is that way becasue WE make it that way. It is not constructive critisism it is negativity and rude.

Ain't nobody taking no preorders here for anything that ain't exist yet :) Think it over, come up with money for a small run, test it and show your results first. Until then, sorry Zardokk, but this thread is closed!
