One of the hard drives I use in my PC is a Seagate 7200.9 that's about 6 months old or so. A few days ago I had the opportunity to pick up a brand new 7200.9 of the same size (now in RAID 0), but as I just noticed yesterday it's only about 3/4 as tall and I'm wondering if anyone happens to know what there is to account for that size difference? Even stranger, this newer drive also sports a slightly earlier firmware version and comes with jumpers enabled by default to allow ONLY SATA 1 speeds (unlike my older 7200.9, which came with no jumpers... which is this series' way of allowing SATA II speeds).

Increased data density on the platter means they can use less of them.

my suggestion is to call seagate tech support and get your answer...they can tell you right away..or...go to their website to email them with the question...they should answer fairly quick!
